This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

If you grew up in the early aughts, you likely have vivid memories of hanging out on a cartoon-covered blob. We’re happy to report that the best couches for kids nowadays are no longer limited to those garishly hued numbers. In fact, today’s kid-friendly furniture could easily be mistaken for miniature love seats, and they’re durable, too. While we know of a few designer hacks to make adult-size furniture childproof (hello, FiberSeal), isn’t there something special about providing a designated spot for toddlers and tweens, whether for snacking, reading, or keying up a good old-fashioned puppet show? Besides, while our list of the best couches for kids varies greatly in shape (we’re talking beanbag sofas and modular foam that looks more like building blocks), none should cramp your interior style.

Our Favorites

Best for Playtime: Brentwood Home Play Couch

Sofas photo
Play Couch, Brentwood Home ($315, was $349)
Shop

Material: Recycled polyester and nylon | Dimensions: Varies | Fill: High-density foam

What we like:

  • 30-day risk-free trial
  • Greenguard Gold certified
  • 6 colorful covers that are removable and machine washable
  • Made with vegetable-derived foam and petroleum-free fabrics

Worth noting:

  • On the pricier side

Why we chose it: A modular sofa with configurations limited only by your child’s imagination.

While Jill Singer of Sight Unseen enlisted the help of Keren and Thomas Richter of White Arrow to custom-make child-size foam building blocks (think: oversize rectangles, triangles, and cylinders) to outfit her family’s Hamptons basement, you can enjoy a similar setup right off the shelf with Brentwood Home’s Play Couch. Offering two more pieces than the cult-favorite Nugget, this set of six can come together in the shape of a classic couch, with back cushions and sheltered arms, or be configured into pretty much anything your child puts their mind to, though reviewers most often revere its seemingly endless fort possibilities.

Best for Movie Nights: West Elm Kids Flip Floor Sleeper

Sofas photo
Flip Floor Sleeper, West Elm ($550 and up)
Shop

Material: Varies | Dimensions: 71-by-33-by-21.5 inches | Fill: Polyurethane foam

What we like:

  • Adjustable to lay flat or sit upright
  • Long enough to sit 3

Worth noting:

  • Heavy—60 pounds, to be exact
  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: The slouchy silhouette of a beanbaglike floor pillow embodies that notion of cool and comfortable that will transition with your child.

Keep a floor sofa in the kids-only zone (like designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell did) as a crash pad for Disney marathons. While Velten-Lattrell’s original buy from Urban Outfitters is no longer available, this West Elm alternative is a pretty close second. Plan to plop it in front of a TV or projector screen for Saturday-morning cartoons or weekend movie nights (and if buttery popcorn happens to be the snack of choice, you can choose from a swath of performance fabrics, including distressed velvet, tweed, and washed canvas).

Best for a Reading Nook: Crate & Kids Rattan Kids Twin Daybed

Sofas photo
Rattan Kids Twin Daybed, Crate&Barrel ($1,000)
Shop

Material: Rattan | Dimensions: 85-by-42-by-36 inches | Fill: N/A

What we like:

  • Solid wood slats
  • Adjustable iron legs (helpful if you have sloped floors!)
  • Endless design possibilities, just add sheets and pillows

Worth noting:

  • You’ll need to supply the mattress
  • Biggest option on the list

Why we chose it: It’ll fit a twin mattress or two couch cushions, so it’s easy to switch up the color or pattern of whatever sheets or duvet cover you swaddle it with.

Technically this is a daybed, but if you place enough pillows (to do double duty as back- and armrests), it’s worthy of our list of the best couches for kids. Keep a fully stacked library within reach and it’ll become an irresistible spot to snuggle up with their latest Scholastic find. And no harm is done if they doze off (it just so happens to be Heather Taylor’s children’s sleeping spot in their Laurel Canyon home). Plus the sturdy iron-base frame and legs won’t buckle if your child doesn’t exactly happen to have the best track record with the “no jumping on the bed” rule.

Best for Game Rooms: Urban Outfitters Roma Sofa

green and wavy wood sofa
Roma Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($1,299)
Shop

Material: Polyester, rubberwood, and plywood | Dimensions: 74.8-by-33.5-by-30 inches | Fill: Rayon foam

What we like:

  • Trendy, wavy cut frame that feels whimsical and modern
  • Tall leg height (nearly 7 inches) to easily slide and store stacks of board games under

Worth noting:

  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: An unexpected design that can hold its own in the same space as a table tennis tournament.

We may have only caught a glimpse of the Roma Sofa hanging out in the ultra-cool game room of a recent Studio DB–designed New Jersey beach house, but we can’t unsee it as a perfect hangout spot. The playful wavy wood frame adds a touch of whimsy, but the full two-seater offers deep, 26-inch cushions roomy enough for siblings, friends, and visitors alike. It’s an unexpected, kid-friendly find, but likely ideal for an older crowd.

Best for Sleepovers: Made Haru Sofa

Sofas photo
Haru Sofa, Made ($383)
Shop

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16-by-47-by-20 inches | Fill: Polyethylene

What we like:

  • Mid-century angled wood legs
  • Transitions from love seat to sofa bed
  • The choice between velvet and canvas

Worth noting:

  • Long lead times (ships from the U.K.)
  • Professional cleaning only

Why we chose it: This compact cutie unfolds from lounger to sofa bed in seconds.

This sofa might just be impossible to grow out of, as it’s a small space saver that’ll earn the approval of guests of any age. We first spotted the model in this attic–turned–kids’ room on England’s Kent coast, where it’s an essential part of the seat setup. Its first form is incredibly compact, taking up barely any square footage thanks to a 20-inch depth that’s still long enough to fit two kids, before extending out a full 71 inches, aka longer than a twin. Though we’d keep the back part up for a quasi-tufted headboard.

Best for All Ages: Article Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat

boucle love seat
Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat, Article ($699)
Shop

Material: Bouclé, solid wood | Dimensions: 31-by-64-by-34 inches | Fill: Foam

What we like:

  • Solid wood frame (sturdy!)
  • Removable covers and legs
  • Covered in a low-absorption bouclé

Worth noting:

  • On the firmer side, rather than superplushy

Why we chose it: For a style that’ll grow with your kiddos (and that you can enjoy right along with them).

You don’t have to be 10 or younger to enjoy Article’s Gabriola love seat, and that’s exactly why it’s now one of our favorite kid couches. This is the kind of child-friendly sofa that has staying power—it’s large enough for parents or babysitters to enjoy throughout the younger years, and the compact silhouette is suitable for small spaces and little legs. It’s one of the very first pieces of furniture you’ll see when entering designer Erin Fetherston’s L.A. home; her front door opens up next to her kids’ playroom. Fetherston removed the slatted legs, which gives the Gabriola a superlow profile and makes it even easier for her three children to climb up and down from. (A smart tip: The legs can always go back on when the gang is older.)

On Our Radar

P’Kolino Litte Reader Sofa

Little Reader chair in red
P’Kolino Little Reader Sofa, Maisonette ($170)
Shop

This sofa would be the perfect addition to any reading nook, and we’re not just saying that because the side arms feature a built-in pocket to keep your kiddo’s favorite books within close reach. The cushy foam base is wrapped up in stain-resistant fabrics and offers an angular silhouette perfect for sitting up on. And bonus: The middle can fold out into a sleeper for impromptu naps or playtime.

Pottery Barn Teen x West Elm Carmen Sofa

Sofas photo
Carmen Sofa, West Elm ($599)
Shop

This floor sofa can be wrapped up in either a velvety performance fabric, nubby bouclé, or neutral twill that will easily transition from the toddler to tween years.

Gray Malin x Cloth Company Settee

Sofas photo
Settee, Gray Malin x Cloth Company ($1,350)
Shop

For a touch of whimsy and heirloom-level quality—we’re talking 100% cotton upholstery and solid wood legs—Maisonette’s made-to-order settee offers a storybook-like illustration pattern that feels fantastical but not too childish. Seriously, we can see your kids passing this one down to their children (and so on and so forth).

Milliard Modular Kids Sofa

Sofas photo
Modular Kids Sofa, Milliard ($160)
Shop

At a quick glance, you’d never guess this small sofa could be dismantled into a bed, lightweight poufs, ottomans, and even a puppet theater. Other review-backed perks: The velour cover is removable and machine washable, and the whole thing arrives in one vacuum-sealed package. Did we mention it’s less than $200?

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

As they’re designed with little humans in mind, the best couches for kids are compact and low-profile, even sitting directly on the ground. Smaller dimensions make it easier for toddlers to crawl on and off safely, especially since playtime inevitably dissolves into roughhousing.

Easy-to-Clean Materials

Spills and stains are bound to happen anytime kids are involved, which is why designers often pick out tight-patterned, textured, or dark fabrics for sofas, as they’re better at hiding the marks that refuse to come out after you’ve tried blotting them up with soap, water, and vinegar without success. Psst: Leather and velvet are actually more durable than parents think, and the real deal will develop a lovely patina over time.

Durability

As we’ve confirmed: Kids are messy. They somehow always seem to have their hands in something, and no matter if you watched them diligently wash their hands, their fingers are still sticky from that peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich at lunch. That’s why we recommend going with performance fabrics. In fact, sofas aside, many designers will opt for tough textiles when upholstering a window-seat cushion or banquette (for example, Kate Hayes of Little Hayes Studio chose an indoor-outdoor–approved fabric from Schumacher for a preteen room). They’re less likely to get threadbare or tear. High-density foam filling is also important to note, as regular foam will more easily misshape with age (though if you don’t plan to keep them for longer than your kid outgrows them, this isn’t a detail to get too hung up on).

The Last Word

The best couches for kids are designed to be the go-to seat for your children from the toddler to tween years. This is the place they’ll (hopefully) go to read, eat a snack, or (let’s face it) binge-watch Peppa Pig on their tablet, so it needs to be as comfy as it is durable.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

A good desk chair with great back support is a key element in any workspace. But a great desk chair? It provides not just strong lumbar support but has that elusive element: style. Whether they’re bold and colorful or techy and almost futuristic, an ideal desk chair ties a home office together while helping you be your best professional self.

And, yes, the same goes for kids’ desk chairs but with a few notable differences. The importance of ergonomic elements—armrests and backrests, tilting seats, and adjustable heights—are usually lost on petite bodies and active minds. Compared to adults, kids typically have a more dynamic schedule (how many times do they jump up or settle down in an hour?!) and engage in a broader range of activities. “Kids don’t tend to need hard-core ergonomic design with added lumbar support and all the bells and whistles that some adult office chairs come with,” says California-based Megan Dufresne of interior design firm MC Design. But with that said, children do still need a comfy seat that provides at least some degree of support, so we searched the market for the best kids’ desk chairs, from easy-to-clean metal to comfy and cushioned. (Note: All dimensions are given as height-by-width-by-depth.)

Our Favorites

target swivel chair for kids in navy
Pillowfort Rolling Desk Chair, Target ($80)
Shop

Material:  Powder-coated metal, wood, polyester | 26.5-by-20.5-by-21 inches | Additional features: Cushioned seat

What we like:

  • Affordable task chair
  • Great neutral colors to choose from (beige white, moody navy, blush pink)
  • A breeze to assemble
  • Clean, minimal design with low upkeep

Worth noting:

  • Fixed height
  • Light amount of cushion

Why we chose it: This chair’s 360-degree swivel ability and approachable price tag hook shoppers with one spin.

From Target’s Pillowfort collection, a collaboration with award-winning children’s book illustrator and author Christian Robinson, comes this kids’ desk chair that is light and durable thanks to its powder-coated metal body and seat. While you might think that the benefits of a wheeled chair—switching from side to side of a large desk, moving from computer monitor to computer monitor—might be lost on a child, we’re here to tell you that the functionality of a swivel is for everyone. “Although younger kids will benefit more from the stability of a fixed chair, older children who are starting to multitask will benefit from a swivel chair,” says Mark Cutler of Los Angeles–based interior design firm Cutler Schulze. We love that the simple design, paired up with smooth-rolling casters, is priced at under $100. Make it matchy-matchy with a coordinating desk from the same line, switch it up with a different color, or pair it with something else entirely.

Best Mixed Materials: West Elm Scoop Play Chair

play chair
Scoop Play Chair, West Elm ($89)
Shop

Material: Bentwood, steel | Dimensions: 18.5-by-14-by-27 inches | Additional features: Lightweight

What we like:

  • Thoughtful mixture of materials
  • A rainbow range of fun color choices (like horseradish and sapphire ice)
  • Sold individually or as a set of two

Worth noting:

  • Sized with younger children in mind

Why we chose it: A joyful pop of color and mixed materials make this a classic style fit for kids.

There’s something about the mix of color and materials that feels just right with this streamlined design from West Elm. The playful Scoop, painted in water-based, nontoxic paint, nods to adult-size mid-century modern designs. The curvy bentwood seat paired with slim metal legs in a matching hue is structured with younger kiddos in mind and made to be easy to clean. Tuck it under a wood desk, add multiple at a craft table, or even place one alone in a corner for a good book nook. We also love that West Elm shares that it has been rigorously tested to meet all voluntary safety standards.

Best Colors: Ferm Living Little Architect Chair

Ferm Living Little Architect Chair Domino
Ferm Living Little Architect Chair in Dark Blue, Burke Decor ($185)
Shop

Material: Solid ash wood and ash veneer with MDF core | Dimensions: 20.5-by-13-by-12 inches | Additional features: Lots of colors and matching desks

What we like:

  • Available in 8 colors
  • Solid ash-wood construction
  • Coordinates with other pieces in the Little Architect collection

Worth noting:

  • Seat height of 12 inches is sized for children under age 10
  • Does not provide lower-back support for longer hours of sitting

Why we chose it: All the benefits of a solid wood desk chair with the fun of eight different colors, ranging from bold hues to refined neutrals.

We’re suckers for the clean lines and color options of Dutch purveyor Ferm Living and its Little Architect line of furniture, which includes a table, desk, bench, and chair. The collection has been designed so that the pieces (and colors) can be mixed and matched, thanks to their consistent proportions and palette. This chair is available in eight hues: bordeaux red, dark green, dark blue, rose pink, medium gray, taupe cashmere, and poppy red. It has a bar back and no arms, making it easy to slide in and out under the matching desk or table.

Best Silhouette: Oeuf Bear Play Chair

bear chair
Bear Play Chair, Set Of 2, Oeuf ($224 was $320)
Shop

Material: Plywood | Dimensions: 11.75-by-13.5-by-24 inches | Additional features: Customize the look with Play Stickers

What we like:

  • Sturdy construction of plywood
  • Sustainably made in Europe and ships in recycled packaging
  • Choice between natural birch and white or walnut and white

Worth noting:

  • For children ages 2 to 6
  • Only sold as set of 2

Why we chose it: This desk chair sporting ears plays up its plywood construction.

They say design is in the details, and that’s definitely the case for this kids’ desk chair by Brooklyn-based, French-inspired furniture and clothing brand Oeuf. You likely recognize its statement-making silhouette from Studio AF founder Arielle Fried’s nursery-slash-office; the curved back, made of Baltic birch plywood, is cut in the shape of bear or rabbit ears. What’s more adorable than that?

Best Wood: Industry West Tike Kid’s Chair

wood desk chair
Tike Kid’s Chair, Industry West ($125)
Shop

Material: Beechwood | Dimensions: 14.9-by-16.3-by-22.2 inches | Additional features: Handmade

What we like:

  • 5-year warranty
  • Doubles as a dining chair
  • 20% off right now with the code SUMMER

Worth noting:

  • On the pricey side
  • Can retain spills

Why we chose it: An all-wood frame with rounded corners (no bumps or bruises here).

At first glance, you wouldn’t know this chair was kid-size until you inspected the dimensions—and that’s exactly why we love it. That and the fact that its entire frame is 100% real beechwood. It’s actually a scaled-down version of Industry West’s popular dining chair, Tike. The natural light finish keeps it looking elegant, and the 22.2-inch height makes it easy for your toddler to pull this one up to a desk or dinner table.  Multifunctionality for the win.

Best Retro: Crate & Kids Lennon Molded Kids Play Chair

lennon chair
Lennon Yellow Molded Kids Play Chair, Crate&kids ($49)
Shop

Material: Plastic, steel | Dimensions: 15.5-by-17.5-by-22.5 inches | Additional features: Pair it with the play tables

What we like:

  • Comfy and supportive
  • Ergonomic mold
  • Easy to care for
  • Comes in blue, gray, white, and yellow

Worth noting:

  • Might be tricky to put together (as one nonhandy grandmother notes)

Why we love it: We love the charm, colors, and overall cuteness of this nostalgic desk chair.

While we love Leanne Ford’s bouclé cushioned miniature chair for Crate & Barrel—peep it in the playroom of Erin Fetherston’s L.A.  home—we’re really into this well-reviewed, molded alternative right now. Technically speaking, the Lennon has contemporary flair. But we can’t help but see grade-school chair vibes, just way cuter. The ergonomic plastic seat is easy to clean (all it’ll ever need is a quick wipe), and the capped legs keep floor scratching at bay. Plus reviewers confirm that not only do their kids from ages 2 to 9 love it, but fellow parents share that they are comfortable enough to pop a squat when they need to, as well.

Best Value: IKEA Orfjall Chair

Ikea Orfjall Chair Domino
Shop

Material: Steel (seat and frame), polypropylene and polyurethane foam (seat pad), polyester fabric (seat cover) | Dimensions: 33-by-21-by-21 inches | Additional features: Cushioned seat, 360-degree swivel, height adjustable

What we like:

  • Adjustable seat, caster wheels, and swivel ability
  • High-quality density foam in the seat for ample cushioning
  • High back provides good lumbar support

Worth noting:

  • Recommended for ages 6 to 12
  • Nonremovable cover

Why we chose it: Homework just got a little more bearable thanks to this adjustable swivel chair at an affordable price point.

For the serious sitters in your life who can draw for hours, we recommend something that swivels for maximum efficiency. This chair from IKEA offers flexibility with its adjustable height and swiveling seat, not to mention the comfort of the cushioned seat and back. Its simple, airy shape keeps it from feeling too techy and grown-up, and its three colorways (light blue, light pink, and light gray) work in a variety of spaces and color palettes. If you’re concerned about the chair rolling away, know that the casters have a safety mechanism that keeps it in place. It will also automatically release when your kid sits down. Phew!

amazon plush office chair
Armless Office Desk Chair by Emiah, Amazon ($209 was $220)
Shop

Material: Faux leather, rubber, metal | Dimensions: 19.3-by-25.5-by-34.2 inches | Additional features: Adjustable height

What we like:

  • Trendy enough for picky tweens
  • Fast shipping
  • An extra-wide and -deep seat (25.5 inches and 19.3 inches, respectively)

Worth noting:

  • Not suitable for young children; possible tipping

Why we chose it: An adjustable height and roomy seat fit.

Nearly every chair on this list is geared toward kids enrolled in elementary school, so if you’re on the search for a seat that would make a middle- or high schooler happy, we have just the find for you. This armless viral sensation from Amazon delivers 4.8 inches of adjustable height, 120 degrees of tilt, and 360 degrees of swivel. The extra-padded premium leather cushion is comfortable enough to become their main study spot. In fact, it may be so comfortable that they’ll want to take it with them to college.

More Affordable Kids’ Desk Chairs We Love

If you don’t want to spend as much on your child’s chair as you did your own office chair—especially since there’s no saying how long it’ll fit them—don’t sweat. We found a few under-$100 finds that still nail our criteria for the best kids’ desk chair: comfy, cute, and quality.

How We Chose These Products

Design and aesthetics always play an important part in our decision-making. In fact, when we vetted our selections for the best kids’ desk chairs, these two factors were just as important as the practical side of things, like proper back support, durable materials, and easy-to-clean surfaces. Color palettes, budget, and adjustability were also top of mind, balancing affordability and appearance. And our experts, from educators to interior designers, agree: It’s not form over function but instead form and function when it comes to the best workspaces for your child.

Shopping Checklist

Design and Shape

If you’re looking for the best desk chair for your child, you might initially think that you need a mini version of your own. But our experts caution that’s not quite the case. Elements such as armrests, which provide critical elbow support when spending the day typing away at a computer, might actually prevent a child from sitting properly. “A desk chair that does not have armrests allows a child to tuck it all the way in, ensuring good posture and proper back support,” says interior designer Becc Burgmann of Becc Burgmann Interior Design, who also has a background in education. And on the topic of good back support: Make sure the chair has a high, sturdy, and comfortable back for them to lean against.

When it comes to aesthetics, a desk chair should go with a room’s overall design in terms of both style and color scheme, recommends Jessica Welling of Jessica Welling Interiors. “Kids’ chairs come in a lot of fun colors, so I often try to choose something that will stand out but still fit in with the room’s color scheme,” she adds.

Material and Overall Quality

Durability is the way to go when it comes to this category. “I tend to navigate toward strong materials that will withstand some wear and tear and work with the overall design for the space we are creating,” explains Dufresne. Look for materials like wood and powder-coated steel that fit the bill in terms of both longevity and ease of cleaning. And for desk chairs that have upholstered seats, our experts recommend wipeable surfaces like vinyl, faux leather, or performance fabrics designed to stand the wear and tear of art projects and lots of movement.

Ergonomic Design

“Kids don’t generally spend hours on end sitting in one position at their desks,” Wellington points out. “They get up and move around a lot more than adults.” With that in mind, ergonomics is still important. You’ll want to make sure that the depth of the chair is appropriate for your child so that they can sit with their back against the back of the chair and their knees off the edge. That way, they have the appropriate lumbar support they need, and their feet can hang down toward the ground or even reach it, depending on their size and that of the chair. If you’ve found a chair that fits them properly, “sitting well and comfortably will help a kid focus and learn better,” comments Cutler. What’s more, “it’s never too early to start teaching your kids about posture!” he adds.

Adjustability

If there’s anything that all kids do, it’s grow. And so the desire for a desk chair (and clothes and beds and shoes…we could go on!) that grows with them is normal. “A desk that can adjust in height is amazing because it can lead to better posture and ultimately make the desk more useful over a longer period of time,” says Cutler. While that’s certainly the case, not all chairs are adjustable, so make sure you’re checking in every so often that your child is sitting comfortably. If their feet touch the ground and their knees are at less than 90 degrees (like when you’re riding a bike that’s too small and your knees feel like they’re in your neck!), it’s time to size up.

Portability

Despite their mobility, interior designers and educators generally do not recommend using folding chairs as long-term solutions for kids’ desk chairs because of their lack of durability and ergonomic form. Most folding chairs are designed to be lightweight and relatively flat for space-saving purposes, so they’re not exactly designed to accommodate a human body for extended periods of time (comfortably, anyway!). If you’re worried about saving space, “a chair without arms that can be tucked under a desk when not in use isn’t going to take up much space at all,” advises Burgmann, and there are plenty of kids’ desk chairs that have wheels or are lightweight enough to pick up and move.

Ask Domino

Q: Does my child really need an ergonomic chair?

“Children don’t spend as much time at a desk as adults (at least they shouldn’t!), so I don’t think splurging on an ergonomic chair is necessary,” asserts Burgmann. However, she adds, “their desk chairs do need to be set at the right height, be comfortable, have a back for support, and be easy to use.” Kids (and adults, really) should be taking regular breaks, where they stand up from their desk, she points out. It can be helpful to encourage children to do specific tasks like homework at their desk, but then suggest they read curled up on the couch or tummy-down on the floor to stretch their bodies and strengthen other muscles.

Q: In the era of remote schooling, which type of chair is best for long periods of sitting?

Most professionals we spoke with acknowledged that it’s not ideal for children to be sitting in the same spot for extended periods of time, but that’s not always an option if they’re attending school remotely. You’ll want to find something that has good back support, for sure, but also a chair that has a cushioned seat: one with firm padding, says interior designer Shana Francesca, founder of Cincinnati. A seat that’s not hard but firm, she notes, will be more supportive. “Really soft cushions collapse and condense after 15 to 30 minutes of sitting,” she points out, so go for something that has a balance of giving and firmness.

Q: Are swivel chairs safe for children?

Swivel chairs get a bad rap for being unsafe for children, but our experts are on the same page: They are generally fine for most kids, depending on their age. “Younger kids will benefit from more stability of a fixed chair, while older ones who are starting to multitask will benefit from a swivel,” explains Cutler. Instead we recommend avoiding a chair with wheels for young children (“You know it will be used as a toy!” warns Welling) and setting boundaries for older kids. The novelty of a chair that moves will eventually wear off.

The Last Word

If you’re looking for the best desk chair for your child, you’ll want to think about how they’ll be using the seat: Is it a place for short spans of time devoted to crafts and coloring or is it the locus of learning for hours at a time during remote school? Depending on their activities and their age, different features like a cushioned seat, a wipeable surface, or adjustable height might be just what they need. But regardless of what you’re looking for, lumbar support and a touch of personality are key, and these chairs hit all those marks.

The Internet can be a dizzying place for parents to navigate when they’re in search of the latest (and greatest) kids’ stuff, which is why we like to rely on word of mouth for uncovering hidden gems for the 12-and-under crowd. Aside from the best deal of the week our editors Slack about regularly, we’ve also been gushing over Nurture&’s new convertible bed frame, a hair-care line that won’t sting your little one’s eyes, and a New York chef’s kid-friendly design hack.

TL;DR: Allow this monthly roundup to be your formal invite to our Domino group chat. We’ll document all of the editor-favorite kids’ products, buzzy brand launches, design hacks, and other children-centric finds occupying space inside our heads every month.

Something New: The Kids Bed and Daybed

Finding a bed frame fit for the toddler years and tween stage can be tricky—stylistically, functionally, and purely from a safety perspective. But Nurture&’s latest launch is designed to grow with your little one. The chic rounded structure is fully convertible; you can add matching sleeping rails to squash rolling-off-the-bed fears or a storage trundle to combat clutter if you’re tight on space. And when your kiddo is ready to make the upgrade to a full or larger mattress,  perhaps even fly the nest altogether, you can snatch up the daybed conversion kit to transform it into an adult-friendly place for impromptu guests to spend the night. Plus there are 12 different color-blocked combos to choose from in a velvetlike performance fabric that’s easy to clean.

Artist Series: Meet the Lithographer by Gaby Bazin

Meet the Lithographer, David Zwirner Books $20(Ed Pick)
Meet the Lithographer, David Zwirner Books ($20)
Shop

This isn’t your typical bedtime story. Gaby Bazin’s Meet the Lithographer is only the second children’s book to be offered from David Zwirner Books and the first to take a deep dive into the art of lithography for a younger audience. Flipping through the hardcover’s 40 pages is like getting a personal tour of one artist’s workshop as they walk you through how the printing process has changed since Alois Senefelder first invented it. The bright, colorful illustrations (a creation of just three colors) also showcase all the different tools used, past and present, to implement the technique. It dropped just last week, and we’ve been eager to gift copies to all of the creative kiddos in our lives ever since. Hot tip: Save this one for a birthday or the holidays.

Nordstrom Anniversary Deal: Silver Cross Reef Stroller

Silver Cross Reef Stroller in Stone

There are some shockingly good stroller deals in this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, including perennial favorite Thule gliders. But for a truly luxurious, multi-terrain traveling system, there’s nothing as splurge-worthy as Silver Cross—especially when there’s a discount on an exclusive new neutral colorway. The Reef stroller not only comes in a chic sandy finish, but it’s now essentially $300 off. The single seat is capable of converting into four different modes, including reclining, rear-facing, forward-facing, and a folding bassinet primed for car seat adapters. One reviewer writes that they returned their Uppababy Vista for the Reef before it was even on sale. “I feel like a princess pushing this dream of a stroller. It has so many details that are absolutely gorgeous,” they write. “The feature set on this beats everything else that we have seen, has a super-amazing fold, and pushes like butter.”

Go-To Gift: Jellycat Stuffies

Our shopping director, Liz Buxton, says you can’t go wrong with a Jellycat when gifting for kids. She’s been buying them in bunches to have on hand for whenever a third birthday sneaks up on her. They also make for an ideal last-minute present idea if you happen to be an Amazon Prime member. We’re partial to the Chick, Fox, and Frog.

Spillproof Slipcovers: Bemz Modern Maximalist Couch Covers

You’d never guess that the living room in New York–based chef Nasim Alikhani’s apartment was kid-friendly, mainly because the sectional is all white. It’s all thanks to a custom-made, washable slipcover. By using the cover, she says, she has prolonged the life span of her sofa—by 15 years. If you don’t want to go the bespoke route, there are plenty of other couch covers on the market tailored to fit certain styles; for instance, if you own a sofa from IKEA, we can’t recommend Bemz enough, especially if you want to experiment and handcraft one of the best patterned sofas. Just last week, the company came out with a maximalist line offering checks and block prints with ruffled details, box-pleat skirts, and more. Or stick to taking a page out of Alikhani’s book and play with patterns and pops of color in the form of throw pillows

Stylish Swivel: Sarah Flint x Namesake Crawford Glider

Crawford Swivel Glider in Eco-Performance Fabric
Crawford Swivel Glider in Eco-Performance Fabric, Namesake ($699)
Shop

Shoe designer Sarah Flint recently teamed with nursery brand Namesake to design not baby apparel but two pillow-back swivel gliders. Available in green and blue lattice patterned eco-weave slipcovers (that are water repellent and stain resistant, to boot), the classic silhouette has us swooning—particularly when paired up with the matching ottoman. While a bit on the pricey side, there’s a timeless appeal to this hand-upholstered chair. As Flint has said, “I wanted to collaborate with Namesake on this Crawford glider because I designed my own nursery with all of their pieces after being so impressed with their safety testing and sustainability measures.” Consider us influenced.

At about the same time we stumbled upon this ethically made kids’ clothing, toy, and accessories brand, based in Barcelona, we saw that it is hosting a seriously good sale. The clearance section is up to 50% off, and you can take an additional 10% off with the code EXTRA10TINY for a limited time. After this discovery, we made a beeline for the beachwear section, where we spotted the most darling gingham swim caps, bloomers, and trunks. We highly recommend perusing everything, from graphic-print onesies to saturated beach towels that encompass the look and feel of a Mediterranean summer vacation.

Mop Maintenance: California Naturals Hair Care

California Naturals founder Shelby Wild shared with us that while adults are the target audience of the new clean brand (available at Target), the products have become a welcome part of her daughter’s hair-care routine, too—especially since she detests having her hair brushed or getting soap in her eyes. The entire line is 98% naturally derived (i.e., cruelty-, sulfate-, phthalate-, and gluten-free), which means it’s safe for sensitive skin, scalps, and eyes. Plus it’s suitable for kids with all hair types, particularly those who spend most of their days in a pool, ocean, lake, or stream.

Last Chance: 30% Off Select Furniture at Oeuf

We clocked a few cult-favorite pieces and apparel from Oeuf—the Brooklyn-based, French-inspired design studio—on sale and had to get the deets. Here’s the scoop: The Arbor crib and Bear walnut play chairs are marked down 30% until they’re sold out. These are the very items you may recognize in Christene Barberich’s nursery and Studio AF founder Ariella Fried’s playroom, so if you’ve been waiting to score a good deal on either, now’s the time to finally bring them home.

The Internet can be a dizzying place for parents to navigate when they’re in search of the latest (and greatest) kids’ stuff, which is why we like to rely on word of mouth for uncovering hidden gems in the 12-and-under category. Aside from the best deals our editors Slack about on the daily, we’ve also been gushing over a high chair brand’s new monochromatic collection, Serena & Lily’s darling nursery quilt drop, and sardine-shaped crayons your little ones can bring with them into the bath.

TL;DR: Allow our monthly roundups to be your formal invite to our Domino group chat. We’ll document all of the editor-favorite kids’ products, buzzy brand launches, design hacks, and other children-centric finds occupying space inside our heads every month.

Kidproof Flooring: Cold Picnic’s Washable Rugs

Our Slack channel was abuzz when news broke of Cold Picnic’s 100% organic cotton rug collection (yes, they can go in your washing machine). The brand is beloved for its punchy colors and abstract patterns—the sort of styles that play especially well in a  kids’ room—and this latest lineup certainly delivers. But the added layer of washability means there’s less worry of a rogue spill or splatter ruining the floor covering.

Snuggle Buddy: Patchwork Linen-Blend Teddy Bear

Stuffed animals are the natural cuddle companion of kids, and to be perfectly honest, plenty of grown-ups, too. Bearing in mind that whatever cutesy creature you give your little one now may be with them well beyond the teen years, we’d opt for something long-lasting and handmade like this patchwork teddy sewn together with a durable blend of linen and cotton. It’s a limited-edition creation and now 68% off at Nordstrom, which is a steal considering the original asking price was a whopping $220.

Summer Nursery Swap: Serena & Lily Baby Quilts

We’ve been waiting for what feels like forever for Serena & Lily’s new nursery bedding to drop. This month we finally received word that the mini quilts were officially added to the site. Hand-embroidered in cotton voile, there’s a whole range of subtle yet cheery patterns to choose from, including jungle-inspired scenes of tiger cubs among palm fronds in a soft yellow and a herd of elephants in a goes-with-anything sandy gray or sky blue. Each features a pillowy ticking stripe border for a tailored touch. Both are also reversible (the other side is a mini geometric print). While these two are our favorites, there’s also a simple scalloped edge and starfish-adorned option in a French blue to pick from.

New Heights: Lalo Monochrome Collection

The Chair in Mono Licorice, Lalo ($255)

Our favorite sustainably minded high chair has always come in a fun color combo of white, sage, black, pink, or blue and the natural finish of beechwood that the booster seat is made from. But for a limited time, you can grab the three-in-one design in either an all-white or all-black finish, doubling down on the modern aesthetic the brand has become known for. As one reviewer in love with the design shares, “It fits right into my dining table and doesn’t even make me feel like there’s a high chair in the house.”

On Our Radar: Lorien Stern Clothing and Decor

When our shopping director, Liz Buxton, found out about artist and designer Lorien Stern’s online storefront of kids’ clothing, accessories, and home goods, she started mentally checking off her list of upcoming baby gifts to buy. The California-based maker’s work has been labeled supercute by our shopping team, including a tadpole cotton onesie (for just $15!) and a circular bath mat that looks like a curled-up snake.

Paint-Free Pattern: Washi Tape Bookshelf Border

There’s a lot to admire in the bedroom of Emma Gurner’s 7-year-old-son—like a headboard that’s actually a climbing wall thanks to a circular cutout and colorful footholds. And while paint definitely dominates the space, it’s the paintless DIY that caught our eye. If you’re looking to quickly dress up a bookcase or floating shelves, Gurner proves an easy way is using washi tape. You don’t need brushes or stencils to achieve a perfectly patterned edge. Simply add something like this stripy option from Etsy storefront TheILovelyIFactory to your cart and then peel and paste to your heart’s content.

Baby Shower Most Wanted: Coterie’s Newborn Gift Box

Coterie’s New Born Gift Box
New Born Gift Box, Coterie ($125)

Our former editorial director of branded, Angela Tafoya, has a monthly subscription to Coterie. In her humble opinion, the company “makes by far the most superior diapers on the market.” So when it announced a specially curated gift box geared toward first-time parents, we took note. The luxurious bundle is stuffed full of bestsellers, including its ultra-absorbent diapers, traveling wipes made only with plant fibers, a carrying pouch, and a sweet stuffed animal. And now through the end of June, if you purchase the box, Coterie will donate up to 5,000 packs of diapers to families in need.

Bath Time Must-Have: Sardine Bath Crayons

Made by Japanese brand Kitpas, this colorful set of 10 sardine-shaped crayons is the ultimate bargaining chip for kids who dread bath time. Parents in the comments are pretty much impressed across the board of not only how easily they wash off but how durable they are. These have been tossed and dropped without breaking; can be used underwater without dissolving; and can even be sharpened along the way.

Backyard Distractions: Avenlur Wood Climbers

School’s out for summer, but you can bring the playground home with Avenlur’s colorful jungle gyms. Right now, nearly every set is on sale and will ship for free. Swings, seesaws, rope walls, hideouts—Avenlur makes them all with real wood (no plastic to be found here!) for a sleek setup in a backyard or basement.

Diaper Dad: The Parent Backpack by Colugo

Diaper bags are a dime a dozen, and really any tote with multiple pockets and compartments can prove a worthy vessel. But Colugo’s new backpack promises to do it all, and it features gender-neutral colorways that are machine washable and wipeable. “My husband isn’t into diaper bags or doesn’t care much about them, but he specifically loves this one,” one reviewer writes. Part of the allure is that there are pockets for things beyond wiping your baby’s bum, like a laptop sleeve and back liner to easily fit on a suitcase or stroller.

Amazon Hidden Gem: Munchkin Any Angle Weighted Straw Cups

Munchkin Any Angle Weighted Straw Cups, 2-Pack

It’s hard to ignore 52,000-plus positive reviews on a product, especially when it was purchased in the thousands in the past week alone. Skimming through the Amazon reviews of these sippy cups quickly proves why they’re a bestseller. They are dishwasher-safe, spillproof, and easy for newborns and toddlers to hold (one parent wrote that their 2-year-old has been using it since they were 9 months old). For the few naysayers claiming it leaks, another shopper clears things up: “If you take the cup from the fridge to room temp, the cold air inside the cup expands as it warms, pushing out a bit of liquid from the straw. A very simple solution is to unscrew the top for a minute (maybe less!).”

It’s been dubbed the perfect transition cup, recommended for kids needing to strengthen their face muscles for speech or those who simply don’t want anything to do with bottles.

Aside from the best deals our editors Slack about on the daily, this week we’ve been gushing over an attic transformed into a playroom-slash-treehouse, the chicest sand-castle mold we may have ever seen, and early Memorial Day sales starting at Crate & Kids.

When designer Melinda Trembly went about transforming the attic of her clients’ Southern California home, the objective was to create something magical for their two grandkids. Trembly’s inspiration drew from the imaginative escape of a treehouse, so she needed equally whimsical walls and ceilings for play. The search led her to London-based Sian Zeng’s interactive magnetic wallpaper, which comes with removable attachments in the form of flying pigs and cute woodland creatures and dry-erase bubbles. Honing in on the treehouse effect, Trembly added a Serena & Lily swing to provide the perfect reading nook.

For the Beach: Zara Home Castle Bucket

Plenty of us have memories of building sand castles at the beach with small molds and flimsy plastic tools that could easily get swept away by the ocean or forgotten when it was time to head home. Instead of packing a random assortment of toys this summer, reach for this single bucket. All your kiddo will have to do is fill this one up and the entire fortress will be built at once—and you’ll be able to free up more space in your beach bag. A win-win.

Early Holiday Deals: Up to 55% Off at Crate & Kids

Price tags are starting to dip over at Crate & Kids ahead of Memorial Day weekend—everything from bedding to nursery furniture is up to 55% off. Among the already well-stocked sale section we spotted Leanne Ford’s spindle wood baby crib (over $200 off), adorable dotted pillow shams, and this heirloom-quality wicker rocker. Timeless in design, its intricately woven natural rattan and cane form has earned it 5 stars from reviewers. “I was afraid it might be too small for my 6-year-old, who’s a bit on the tall side, but it’s beautiful and strong,” a shopper writes. “She will get on it and ride it for dear life, yet it’s still in one piece.”

Something New: Ever Eden Kids’ Hair Care

If hair washing is low on the totem pole of your kiddo’s list of priorities, consider bribing them with this cutesy set of shampoo and conditioner. While the formula is designed to meet the needs of a still growing scalp, the playful packaging is what’s made it a hit with multiple shopper’s children. “My daughter loves the fun packaging and how it smells. We are hooked,” one review reads.

Frequent-Flier: State Travel Bags

Finding suitcases and travel-friendly duffels for children that aren’t made out of cheap fabric or covered in cartoons can be a challenge. That’s why this State bag caught our eye. Not only does it don fun, gender-neutral color combos, the inside reveals pockets and zippered compartments that rival Mom or Dad’s own. We also love that it’s made from 45% recycled materials and part of the profits go toward the brand’s support initiatives for American children and families in need.

Calming Cuddles: Quiet Mind Weighted Pillow

Small Weighted Pillow

If your child loves the embrace a weighted blanket can provide but struggles to carry it themselves from room to room, Quiet Mind might be just the ticket. Its small, 6-pound pillow is great for kids who are at least 40 pounds and struggle with being easily distracted or stressed. It’s also the perfect size to comfortably sit in their lap, doubling as a desk for homework. But our favorite feature is the fact that the cover is safe to toss in the wash, so you don’t have to worry about sticky snack fingers ruining the soothingly soft exterior.

Those first few moments after putting your little one down for a nap can feel like walking on eggshells. It plays seven different soothing sounds, including a heartbeat and shushing, as well as good old white noise.

When it comes to nursery gliders, I often hear from moms that there is a divide in thought. Are they really worth the investment? Will they actually end up getting used? And, a big one: What do you do with them when they are inevitably outgrown? Some say don’t bother with buying the thing, to begin with. Angela Tafoya, a new mother and the branded editorial director at Domino, has a different take. During those sleepless nights and middle-of-the-night feeds, she told me, you’re going to be happy you have one since most babies need movement to lull them back to sleep.

Our editors look at all kinds of kids’ products, day in, day out, and gliders often fall into two camps: comfortable but not cute or stylish to look at but stiff to sit in. At its worst, the furniture piece is a potentially expensive one-and-done purchase not designed to seamlessly transition past the newborn stage (those gliding mechanics aren’t exactly elegant). When Angela and I started poking around for a nursery glider that could do it all, we had a collective lightbulb moment after landing on a design from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ collaboration with designer Rafael de Cárdenas: the Sunbeam swivel chair

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Sunbeam Swivel Chair

Chairs photo
Sunbeam Swivel Chair By Rafael de Cárdenas, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams ($2,715 was $3,194)
Shop

The Sunbeam fuses the effortless movement of a glider with a 1940s Art Deco–inspired design that endures far beyond the nursery, justifying the investment (which is comparable in pricing to similar types from Domino-reader favorites Lulu and Georgia and Serena & Lily). While it trades in the rocking motion for a side-to-side swivel, Angela says she prefers the style. For starters, it features a wide range of movement that can translate to a womblike experience for your baby. The armrest placements are high, making them perfect for feeding positions. And with a 22-inch-deep seat, the silhouette promises supportive comfort—you know, in case your baby won’t sleep anywhere else. And the swivel mechanism? It’s completely hidden from sight.

There are oodles of customization options here. While every chair frame is constructed in North Carolina with kiln-dried and sustainably sourced engineered wood, there are a whopping 373 fabrics to choose from—many of which are durable performance textiles. We’re fans of the performance faux shearling, in particular. It’s a versatile pick that feels inviting, cushy, and decidedly chic. Other personalized design details include three seat cushion options (a signature-blend poly, eco-luxe poly, and eco-down blend) and the choice to add fabric contrast on the front or back of the chair.

Psst: The Sunbeam swivel is also 15% off through May 7 during the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Friends and Family Sale (usually only available to Comfort Club members). Want 30% off? Opt-in to Comfort Club at checkout to save on this order and all orders for the next 12 months.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

Getting a baby to sleep might be one of life’s hardest tasks, but thankfully finding a comfortable chair for the nursery has never been easier. When Naomi Coe started her nursery-focused design firm in 2007, there were only a few good baby-centric brands and very limited styles. In the years since, she has designed 200 rooms for little ones, wrote Your Perfect Nursery, and witnessed the rise of high-quality, well-designed pieces firsthand.

Today the problem with nursery furniture swings in the other direction from when Coe started: There are seemingly endless options, which can leave parents-to-be struggling with decision paralysis. And the nursery classic, a rocking chair, has faced stiff competition from gliders. “Gliders seem to be much more popular with my clients,” says Coe. “They have a greater range of motion than a rocking chair,” and some people find them to be more comfortable. They also require a bit less effort to keep moving than a rocker.

With so many varieties to choose from, we asked Coe what to keep in mind when shopping for a glider to help make those newborn days (and long nights) a little bit easier. Here are the eight best nursery gliders.

Our Favorites

Best Overall: Nurture& The Glider Plus

Nurture Glider
The Glider Plus, Nurture& ($1,399)
Shop

Fabric: Polyester-nylon blend in ivory or gray | Base: Birchwood and poplar | Size: 43-by-33 inches

What we like:

  • 200-degree swivel
  • Adjustable headrest
  • 30-day return window and free shipping
  • Hidden USB ports for easy charging

Worth noting:

  • Ottoman and pillow sold separately

Why we chose it: A quiet, motor-powered recline means you can adjust your position without waking the babe. And once they’ve flown the nest, this one is chic enough to live outside the nursery.

Nurture& is known for its gliders, but when it comes to the cream of the crop of its assortment, the newest Glider Plus does it all. Its cushy silhouette is covered in a stain-resistant (read: spit-up–proof) fabric that comes in either a creamy ivory or soft gray. The high-back top not only provides ample lumbar support but features a hidden, adjustable headrest, a bonus feature that one dad truly enjoyed, adding, “When reclined, it’s so great to support my head while looking down at my phone during those 3 a.m. sessions.”

A recliner and glider in one, this chair is also C-section approved and has become many a reviewer’s go-to sleep spot (expectant moms and their eventual little ones included). And while the price is definitely on the splurgy side, shoppers are adamant it’s “worth every penny,” dubbing it the “best nursery investment we’ve made.” Compared to others on this list, its roomy depth allows you to rock two kids at once, and it can easily be disguised as an accent chair in the living room when the nursery is no longer needed and becomes a home office.

Best Customizable: Monte Design Como Glider

The Best Nursery Glider Option: Monte Design Como Glider
Como Glider, Monte Design ($1,595)
Shop

Fabric: Heathered fabric, microfiber, wool, cotton/linen, velvet, sheepskin | Base: Solid wood or stainless steel | Size: 33-by-38 inches

What we like:

  • Performance fabrics
  • Made to order
  • Sustainable manufacturing practices
  • Removable cushion covers for easy laundering

Worth noting:

  • Long lead times

Why we chose it: Not only is this fan-favorite glider customizable, it’s just about the comfiest place to take a much-needed nap.

This glider is a staff favorite at Magic Beans and Go Green Baby, where the founder has been known to curl up for a nap in the store model. In addition to earning a coveted stamp of approval from purveyors of nursery gear, this chair can be personally tailored in a number of different performance, microfiber, velvet, and woven fabrics, and the cushion covers are removable for easy washing. It is spacious and very soft, glides and swivels, and customizable in tons of classic nursery hues (like petal pink) as well as on-trend colors (such as moss green). Coe loves Monte gliders and often sources them for her clients. The brand offers details on its responsible manufacturing and sustainability efforts online, which is always a good sign. But since these gliders are made to order, they can take upwards of 20 weeks to ship, so you’ll want to get this chair ordered before the third trimester.

Best Value: Evolur Swivel Glider

The Best Nursery Glider Option: Evolur Swivel Glider
Evolur Swivel Glider, Amazon ($418)
Shop

Material: Polyester | Base: Metal | Size: 32-by-39 inches

What we like:

  • 8 muted hues
  • Side pockets for stashing books or magazines
  • Spacious seat and high back

Worth noting:

Why we chose it: If you’re not looking to spend just as much on a glider as your firstborn, consider this reasonably priced option that comes in plenty of colors.

A lower price point sometimes raises questions about comfort and quality, but this chair passes the test. One reviewer writes that, with the other gliders they looked at, “the seat seemed really narrow and the back wasn’t high enough to rest your head on.” But this one, they report, is “the perfect height and has plenty of room for myself and my 3-year-old daughter to sit in it with me. The material is thick, and the chair seems very sturdy.” It comes with side pockets for stashing bedtime books or downtime magazines, and while the polyester fabric will run warmer than other fabrics like cotton or linen, it’s easy to clean and comes in eight muted hues to match any nursery.

How We Chose These Products

Shopping for nursery furniture can feel like an uphill battle, especially when you’re hoping to pick pieces that will last long after the newborn stage, so we made sure all of our favorite gliders could blend seamlessly in a living room or bedroom, too. We reached out to Coe, owner of the nursery-focused design firm Little Crown Interiors, who has designed 200 rooms for little ones and seen the quality of well-designed gliders firsthand. We also spoke to Natalie George, founder of Go Green Baby, for more insight about the best nursery gliders.

Our Shopping Checklist

Size and Style

When it comes to gliders, Coe is looking for a few key things. “First and foremost, it needs to be comfortable,” she says. A high back will give you a place to rest your head, and a spacious seat will accommodate a variety of needs, from a breastfeeding pillow in the infancy stage to a wriggling toddler listening to stories before bed. Also, she notes: “A style that flows well with the rest of the home is ideal.” A glider is an investment piece, one that should last for a second child or potentially even work in another room after the baby years.

Material and Color

“Luckily a lot of glider brands offer great performance fabrics that stand up to stains,” says Coe. “Microfiber fabrics are better at keeping the spills on the surface so they can be wiped off.” With spit-up, milk spills, and other inevitable baby messes, a midtone fabric works well. Coe suggests a neutral color for versatility, as the room morphs from nursery to kids’ room or if the chair ends up in another space altogether.

Price

Upholstery and a gliding mechanism add up, and prices range from a few hundred bucks to the thousands. If you’re worried about cost, try to find a transitional glider, something stylish and durable enough that you can use outside the nursery, too. (Psst: You don’t have to look any further than our list of the best nursery gliders for these!)

Ask Domino

Q: Is a glider a worthy investment for a nursery?

Instead of using a glider, George used a vintage wing-back chair. “My hunched-over back and poor posture continue to linger despite the fact that I am now finished with my baby-feeding experiences,” she writes. “So many nights I had to stand up and pace around my child’s room,” but a glider could have “done the moving for me,” she says. A glider makes the newborn stage easier for both parent and child.

Q: Does a nursery glider need to recline?

“It really depends on what each person is looking for,” says Coe of the slew of nursing chair options available. “I always suggest trying to find a local store where you can test a few out, just to see what types of features appeal to you.”

Q: Are gliders safe for babies?

Gliders are meant for parents and caregivers to use with a baby. A baby should never be left alone in a glider.

Q: What’s the difference between a nursery glider and a rocking chair?

A nursery glider is essentially a chair on a track that allows you to quietly cradle a baby in any direction without disturbing them from their slumber (at least when you actually happen to get them to sleep). A rocking chair, although a classic nursery accessory, only moves back and forth.

The Last Word

The best nursery glider is ergonomically designed and visually appealing, durable but also cozy. It’s a tried-and-tested tool for getting a fussy baby back to sleep, a spot for feedings, and a great way to reduce strain on the back and neck. Since it will serve as a companion for late nights and early mornings, take the time to find a glider that works for you.

Screen time is one of those long-debated hot topics in parenting circles, but no matter what your stance is, it’s hard not resorting to turning on a show or two (or five…) during the colder months. Gross rainy and slushy days are aplenty, and seemingly never-ending illnesses throw off typical routines. How to keep everyone occupied in these last throes of winter before spring truly arrives? I tapped eight moms to share their tips and tricks on minimizing screen time, from colorful looms to creative play ideas to take on your next park trip.

Build a Fort—And a Bunch of Other Things

Courtesy of Amanda Jane Jones

Graphic designer and author Amanda Jane Jones recommends a modern Nugget cushion set (originally designed for college dorm rooms to replace bulky futons), which can be turned into a fort for endless imaginative play. The four pieces can be configured into a tent-shaped structure, a slide, an obstacle course, and even a teeth-baring monster.

Take Advantage of Nature’s Toys

If you don’t have the space for a Nugget (the pieces are admittedly large), Jones reminds us that less is more—and free: “I can just drive up the hill and park by the mountain rocks, and the kids will play and pretend for hours. I forget sometimes that they don’t need fancy toys. Give them some rocks, sticks, and fresh air, and you can sit and read a book!”

Look at Everything as a Blank Canvas

Courtesy of @alandalicia

Echoing Jones, Alicia of @alandalicia is also a big proponent of outdoor play. “My kids could spend hours at the riverside gathering twigs and rocks and ‘building’ random things with them,” she says. To really make the most of the trip, she also suggests arming yourself with simple craft supplies, like markers and thread, so that the kids are free to explore and get creative with what they discover. Fallen leaves are the perfect vehicle for tracing, painting, and even sewing patterns (Alicia prepokes holes as a guide), while pressed wildflowers make for magical laminated butterfly wings.

Make Your Mark

Courtesy of Molly Fitzpatrick

Sometimes it can help to have a goal. For textile designer Molly Fitzpatrick of Dittohouse and her two kids, this means leaving the forest a little more exciting than how they found it. “On snowy hikes, we make surprises for other hikers to find. We try to make superstrange footprints, like imaginary animal tracks, by dragging sticks in the snow, hopping and plopping down to leave a big impression or walking on all fours. We love to imagine what others might wonder when they come across our tracks,” she divulges. If the snow is a bit wet, the Fitzpatrick gang packs it onto trees to make faces or mysterious symbols.

Lean Into What They Like

Designer Erin Jang of creative studio Indigo Bunting recommends taking advantage of your kids’ interests and buying a basic and inexpensive $20 light box that they can use to trace and draw things they’re currently into, whether it be cars, Pokemon, or a favorite animal.

For kids ages 6 and up or particularly nimble little ones, Jang loves this potholder loom kit, which her boys will work on while they listen to a book (she recommends Libbyapp.com, her favorite resource for free library audiobooks you can borrow).

Pin It to Win It

Courtesy of Molly Madfis

For Molly Madfis, founder of the blog Almost Makes Perfect, scrolling Pinterest was her go-to bedtime activity during the pandemic, when her 2.5-year-old was at a prime age to dive into hands-on activities. “To get my son inspired, I would scour Pinterest at night for crafting and baking ideas that related to his interests—skeletons, crabs, etc.—and would also appeal to me,” she shares. The next day, she’d ask her son to pick a project. “Making the choice on his own made him feel like he had agency, and he was always more excited and inspired to make those things together.”

Fight Boredom With Board Games

A collection of classic board games illustrated by an artist is a favorite in Amanda Stewart’s household. The owner of Mochi Kids specifically likes this one because it contains four kid-friendly games (like checkers and backgammon) and a deck of cards. Not to mention, none of them will be an eyesore on your coffee table. If you’re looking to build your board game arsenal even further, Stewart shares that her kids are currently into Sushi Go, Settlers of Catan, Machi Koro, and Ticket to Ride.

Look to the Greats

Courtesy of Brittany Jepsen

If you’re already delving into arts and crafts, take a page from Brittany Jepsen’s playbook and expose your kids to the greats, like Monet and Michelangelo. The designer and founder of The House Lars Built turned a mailing box into a mini theater inspired by Rembrandt’s famous painting Night Watch to introduce her 5-year-old to the enchanting world of puppeteering. Even easier: Follow Jepsen’s Great Artists! courses, where she supplies you and your kids with everything you need—printables, videos, worksheets, exercises—to learn about iconic artists of the past. “My son is finally old enough to try it out, and my crafter heart nearly exploded! I applaud any parent going through this—it can be a lot of work to avoid screen time, but the results speak for themselves!”

Think Big

As for this writer, I’ve got a trick for tiding over antsy toddlers at restaurants: I pull out this jumbo book of hidden pictures. I introduced it to my 4-year-old when she was 3.5 and was blown away by how quickly she would make her way through each page, finding each set of objects with little to no help. It was yet another reminder of how capable toddlers are if we equip them with the right tools. I now stock a few of these in the car to have on hand (we specifically love the Highlights brand).

We Went Down a Rabbit Hole in Search of the Best Amazon Kids’ Products https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/best-amazon-kids-products/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 18:10:19 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=244546

Cheerful lanterns, retro storage, and whimsical pillows await.

Amazon is a polarizing place—hate it or love it, there are good deals to be had and unique gifts to be found. Our best advice for navigating it, as people who look at products all day long, is to pay attention to three things: materials, reviews, and good old-fashioned word of mouth. This extends to the best Amazon kids’ products (insert searching for needles in a haystack trope here). The reason boils down to quantity over quality. It’s not that hidden gems in the kids’ category don’t exist on the behemoth e-tailer, it’s just that they’re obscured by the sheer amount of, well, junky stuff.

So after spending a considerable amount of time going down the proverbial rabbit hole, we rustled up a selection of stock that’s either reviewer vetted, editor favorited, and/or made from durable materials (wood, wicker, cotton, metal, etc.). Our shopping short list also prioritizes design forwardness, because an excellent children’s product is one that balances cheerfulness with usefulness, bringing joy to both parents and kiddos alike. Toss in the extra edge of bright colors paired with exciting shapes and you’ve got yourself a guide to the best Amazon kids’ products—broken out by category, below.

Our Favorite Kids’ Furniture on Amazon

When searching for the best Amazon furniture for kids, the following keywords are your friends: wood, wicker, and multifunctional. The favorites that we’ve come across are as aesthetically pleasing as they are dual purpose.

This includes picnic sets that serve as crafting stations and kid-friendly dining tables; candy apple–red Kartell storage units that are also nightstands; and squiggly stools they can move from room to room for shoe-tying, teeth-brushing, or sous-chefing support.

Our Favorite Kids’ Pillows on Amazon

Color, whimsy, and cotton are the name of the game when it comes to the best kids’ pillows on Amazon. From a surprisingly soft (and portable) headboard solution to a punch-hook alligator pillow and a very cool 100% nylon beanbag, our picks are as durable as they are design-forward.

Our Favorite Kids’ Lighting on Amazon

There’s a surplus of cute, portable lighting options on Amazon—in addition to some surprisingly fun ceiling styles, too. The favorites we stumbled across range from rechargeable LED lanterns and water-resistant hanging globe lights to a very tiny touch-activated mushroom lamp and a cartoon cloud-shaped ceiling statement.

Our Favorite Kids’ Storage on Amazon

The trick to landing excellent kids’ storage solutions on Amazon is to search with the keywords retro, metal, and wood. The resulting mix will be options that are suited to organizing all their stuff without feeling stuffy.

Think: play wagons that double as toy pickup trucks, their own personal storage lockers, old-school-style wood cubbies, and library-esque bookcases complete with canvas-sling shelves.

Our Favorite Kids’ Decor on Amazon

Decor might be one of the toughest kids’ categories to crack on Amazon. Whether that’s because it’s not as practical as the others or it’s the type of product we prefer to procure off Amazon, finding quality styling pieces for a children’s room on the endless e-tailer is no easy feat—but we push on.

Here’s our best advice: Search for items they won’t soon outgrow, like punchy wall clocks and eye-catching mobiles that can survive post-crib as charming ceiling accents. Or go for those cross-category buys that boast a unique enough aesthetic to double as decor—like patterned baby blankets–turned–wall tapestries or animal-shaped storage baskets that will add a layer of whimsy to their space without sacrificing purpose.

Two Tiny Gadgets (One Is Only $2!) That Help Me Avoid Toddler Mealtime Meltdowns https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/toddler-mealtime-manual-fan-food-scissors-review/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 16:35:43 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=257917

As all parents know, the dining table can be a battlefield when it comes to kids. Those memes about cutting a banana too small or offering a toddler exactly what they asked for only to be met with raging tears are all too funny until it happens to you. I’ve tried my best to dodge the meltdowns by implementing baby-led weaning tips and buying top-rated dino-shaped plates and toddler-size spoons. But in the past four years of parenthood, nothing has once dethroned my top two mealtime must-haves: a mini manual fan and tiny food scissors.

Some parents use the ice or frozen peas trick, where you add either to hot food to cool it down quick, but this Japanese hand fan (I also found a $2 Amazon alternative) works so much better—and who likes a watered-down dinner anyway? Plus it’s manually cranked, which means you’ll never run out of batteries or forget to charge it before your next meal (which we were guilty of doing all the time). Sure, you might get some peculiar looks as you’re wielding this weird-looking object in a restaurant, but I’ve learned not to care, especially if it means less time spent blowing on my child’s food and more time enjoying my own hot meal, a rarity in the parenting world.

Our second essential is the small food scissors I purchased when my first-born started solids at 5 months old. Cutting food into strips and small pieces is imperative to prevent choking hazards and these made that daily task a breeze. There’s an open/close button to make them safe and portable, so when we go out to eat I no longer have to awkwardly cut noodles with the edge of my cutlery or ask to borrow a pair from the kitchen. I’ve bought other portable scissors before, and this specific brand just feels sturdier, like actual kitchen shears instead of some dinky craft scissors you know wasn’t meant for food.

The best part? Not only are these two tools affordable, I’ve never had to replace them—not even once.
