And she wouldn’t compromise on the marble shower.

Shea McGee is used to designing extra-large ranch homes and spacious mountainside retreats. So when her husband and Studio McGee cofounder, Syd, surprised her with a run-down vintage Airstream, she felt a little out of her element. “All of my normal dimensions went out the window,” says Shea. Syd had sought the help of a local Utah Airstream renovation company to track down a van that was big enough for the couple and their three daughters—they happened across the perfect one in Idaho. The camper had been abandoned in someone’s yard, and its mere 180-square-foot interior was in a dire state.

While the design obstacles piled up, Shea was unwilling to compromise on certain elements of comfort, like central AC, a functional kitchen (boat-grade fridge-freezer included), a walk-in shower, and a queen-size bed. Ahead, the designer shares how she packed plenty of style into her smallest reno yet.

Be Light on Your Feet

Shea is used to shopping for sturdy, durable, heavy natural stones and woods for her residential projects, but an Airstream requires the exact opposite. “Everything needs to be lightweight,” she notes. When the camper is in motion on the highway, everything inside shakes as if it’s experiencing an earthquake, which means all the stuff has to be a little bit flexible so it doesn’t snap mid-drive. Exhibit A: While the floor looks like vinyl planks, it’s actually a plastic sheeting with a wood design printed on it.

Feast, Then Sleep

The McGee children’s favorite job come nighttime is pushing the button that lowers the walnut dining table. The surface is set on a motorized stand that allows it to become level with the U-shaped banquette. The next step? Grabbing an extra cushion and—voilà!—you’ve got an extra-large bed that comfortably sleeps three kiddos. Shea took advantage of the space underneath the bench by decking it out with drawers for clothes storage.

Take the Spa on the Road

As you make your way toward the back of the Airstream, you’ll find a bathroom with a marble-tiled walk-in shower—yes, you read that right. “I really wanted marble,” insists Shea. She knew the Airstream had strict weight limitations, so she ran the numbers and compromised on the aforementioned flooring and plywood cabinetry. Still, the stone-covered shower couldn’t stand on its own, it needed something to balance it on the other side of the vehicle. Cue the Caesarstone vanity countertop.

Defy the Layout and Lighting Tropes

Shea took every other opportunity she could to make the teeny home-on-wheels feel high-end. This included brass light fixtures from Visual Comfort and a queen-size bed that faces the rear. “A lot of RVs have a bed that’s turned to the side, so you can only get in on one end. I didn’t like the look,” she says. Someone also recommended going with a full—she said no way. The headboard is made out of superthin wood, wrapped in foam, and affixed to the end of the trailer.

A good night’s rest is essential after a day with the McGees’ mobile. The family fills their afternoons with hiking to get everyone’s energy out after sitting in the trailer, followed by campfire meals and s’mores. “We set up the beds and go to sleep, and then hope everyone stays asleep,” Shea says with a laugh.

If you still have the image of Monica Geller from Friends in mind when you think of Courteney Cox, you’re mostly on the right track. The actor is known for being pretty obsessed with cleanliness in real life, so much so that she launched a line of home fragrances and cleaning products last year. But unlike her beloved character, Cox isn’t as much of a control freak. “I’m not a minimalist,” she says. “I like my home to feel inviting and cozy.” In fact, she’s amassed an impressive collection of vintage pieces and just partnered with Chairish to sell several of them on the site.

As for what you can expect from Cox’s curation, there’s a bit of everything, from Art Deco items to mid-century finds to globally sourced pieces. “My taste is ever-changing, but there are certain fundamentals I’m always attracted to: pieces with texture and beautiful craftsmanship but also with a unique history,” she shares. Her favorites are going fast, but we’ve rounded up a few that are still up for grabs.

Soft Landing

Use this chocolatey mohair throw to prop you up on the sofa after a long day or upgrade your sleep setup; either way, it’s bound to infuse a dose of character to any space.

Roaring Good Time

One part industrial, one part Great Gatsby, this cast-iron lamp from the early 20th century isn’t just functional, it’s a statement piece on any desk thanks to its Art Deco base.

Three’s Company

There are three of these wood-inlay cubes in Cox’s collection. At $600 a pop, even one is a splurge, but the Italian-made chevron design definitely makes a statement as a trio.

Off the—Er, Her—Shelf

This vintage French bookshelf is one of Cox’s personal favorites. The five-tier cherrywood unit lived in her bedroom for years and now it can live in yours.

With all kinds of fashion retailers getting in on the home game these days, there are more sources than ever for stylish furniture, decor, and gifts. While the likes of Net-a-Porter and Matches Fashion have the luxury market cornered, we turn to Ssense’s sale section when we’re looking for something with a little edge on a tighter budget. The Montreal-based e-tailer never fails to capture our attention with its expanding home edit, placing supersmall runs from emerging designers next to classics such as Alessi and Georg Jensen and contemporary staples like Sophie Lou Jacobsen and Hay.

One of our favorite features? You can sort the discounted finds by highest or lowest percentage off, which makes finding the very best deals that much easier. Another callout we pay special attention to: anything marked final sale. Here are the discounted picks we’re eyeing right now.

Very Nice Tableware for Even Nicer Prices

If you’re looking for statement flatware, stoneware bowls, or “where’d you get that?”–inducing platters, you’ve come to the right place. There‘s discounted pasta bowls, Sophie Lou Jacobsen pitchers, minimalist charcuterie boards, and more.

Cool-Girl Bath, Marked Down

When it comes to its bath assortment, Ssense prioritizes the quality of the material, so you know anything in the sale section is going to feel luxurious (even if you paid less than $100 for it). Right now, you can score 29% off a melon-hued Hay towel, 50% off a Sunnei water glass/toothbrush holder, and 30% off a dimpled Marloe Marloe vanity set.

Decor Deals We’re Slacking Each Other About

The decor at Ssense varies from zany and wildly colorful to extremely pared back. Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist, some of our of-the-moment favorites are 30% off—that includes a Bode blanket, Toogood pitcher, Rhea Kalo candle, and Nude Glass lidded vessel.

Shocking On-Sale Wellness Goods We’ll Be Picking Up ASAP

Gone are the days of hiding your workout and wind-down gear in a closet. We’re hedging our bets you’ll be keeping these beautiful (and extremely functional) pieces on display. What’s more is that they’d all be worth paying full price for—and here, they’re up to 30% off.

Deals on Kids’ Products Even We’re Coveting

We track what’s cool for kids on a monthly basis, but Ssense always has pages of design-y children’s products on sale to scan. Right now, it’s packed with back-to-school specials on Technicolor K-Way backpacks (62% off!) and fall-forward additions from Misha & Puff and Mini Rodini.

All Alessi, All on Sale

You can always count on some Alessi on sale at Ssense. Whether it’s melamine serving dishes ideal for alfresco dining or a set of six elegant white teacups marked down by 30%, we are coveting it all.

In Our Carts is a monthly series highlighting Domino editors’ favorite new product launches, taken straight from our #editors-picks Slack channel. (Trust us, it’s a treasure trove of great recommendations.) From a cushion brand’s first beach bag to a personality-filled cat bed, here’s the best of what we chatted about this month.

Eastfork and Fishwife Joined Forces on a Hat

While it may seem odd to buy a hat from a tinned fish company, sea life is seriously trending right now. Made in Atlanta by a women-owned business and constructed from a perfectly washed blue cotton, the hat is just one of eight products in the cute collaboration, which includes a picnic bundle and brass spork.

Parachute Released Edged Bedding Fit for a Hotel

While relaxed linen will have our hearts forever, nothing beats the feeling of crawling into a hotel bed. For those times where you’re not on vacation, Parachute just dropped a 100% organic cotton sateen collection with jet black edging that can transport you to a suite in an instant.

MoMA Is Selling the Cheekiest Cat Bed of All Time

A pet bed that isn’t an eyesore is hard to come by, but it’s even rarer to find one that actually makes the room. This tangerine-shaped pet abode is as conversation starting as it is functional; the wicker shell doubles as a cat-scratching post.

Ookioh Launched a Stripe-tastic Towel

Calling all stripe-obsessed humans: Ookioh, a swim and eyewear brand, just launched two towel designs guaranteed to make you stand out on the beach. I’ve actually been using mine as an extra-large bath towel (it’s 40-by-70 inches), and I love the color it adds hanging in my bathroom.

Dedcool Now Makes Dog Shampoo

You may know Dedcool for its distinctly packaged detergent, but the brand just entered the pet hygiene space, too. Meet its nontoxic and vegan dog shampoo, with no sulfates or parabens, that’s more luxurious than most human shampoos. And to top it off, it smells of bergamot, vanilla, and amber.

Aarke Introduced a New Colorway

Everything is more fun in a bright color, and Aarke’s new cobalt hue is no exception. Leave it on your counter to give your kitchen a pop, and enjoy never paying for a plastic bottle of sparkling water ever again.

Schoolhouse’s Lighting Is Now Offered in 36 More Colors

There’s always a place for traditional black, white, and chrome lighting, but when you’re looking to pack a punch, the more color options, the better. Schoolhouse just released 36 new colors in its lighting collection, from the peachy Bellini to the deep Alder.

In Casa by Paboy Released Its First Bag

During the pandemic, Naples-based Poboy Bojang began making cushions based on skills that he picked up at a young age working in his uncle’s tailor shop. The designer recently added drawstring beach bags to his assortment—so you can bring the spirit of his pillows out into the world.

Maiden Home’s New Collection Includes a Minimalist Daybed

Fit for a serene beach house in the Hamptons or beyond, our minds are at ease just looking at the clean lines and plush Belgian linen cushions of this low-slung daybed. At 84 inches long, it’s large enough to fully stretch out on.

The arched floor lamp curving over RHONY star Brynn Whitfield’s green velvet sofa looks like it could have been plucked out of a designer showroom. The sturdy marble base, textural double-drum shade, and adjustable arc—all hallmarks of a premium product. But if you peek at the photo caption, you’ll likely be as surprised as we were to find that Whitfield sourced it not from Visual Comfort or Rejuvenation but the depths of Amazon.

A currently under-$200 buy from Domino reader–favorite Brightech, the Mason arc floor lamp checks so many boxes for us, and adds an included lightbulb, smart capabilities, and three-year warranty into the mix.

21% Off Brightech Mason Arc Floor Lamp at Amazon

Aside from agreeing that the lamp looks positively posh in Whitfield’s Manhattan apartment, one shopper specifically shares, “I was concerned about this lamp given the relatively low price point, but this thing is fantastic.” There are plenty of other reviews that paint the statement-making fixture in a similar fashion—plus we already have the picture for proof.

The Brightech Brand

Brightech has long been a budget-friendly go-to for us (and you!) for luxe lighting at a more digestible price. But affordability isn’t the only reason that the Los Angeles–based brand has earned a favorable reputation. Numerous reviews emphasize that its products are “solidly built,” “well made,” “great quality”—the works. Here are a couple of our favorites from the line, and all the reasons we love them.

10% Off Leaf Pharmacy Task Lamp

brass task lamp
Brightech Leaf Pharmacy Task Lamp, Amazon ($54 was $60)
Shop

While plenty of Brightech’s assortment is on sale, this brass task lamp is, even when discount-less, just $60. A trendy buy for a reading nook or home office, it reminds us of another best-selling Amazon score but for less and backed by nearly 1,000 additional positive reviews. While a bit smaller than DIYer Kiva Brent’s find (or those made by Serena & Lily and CB2), it still offers the same elevated elements: a three-way dimmer; adjustable arm and head; and a sleek, compact silhouette that’s appealingly more modern. Plus one happy shopper summarizes, “The gold is classy, not glitzy. The light is very stable, unlike many lights like this that are shaky and cheap feeling. The base is solid. All the pieces fit together very precisely.”

Up to 33% Off Solar Lights

For a product exposed to the elements day in and day out, 27,000-plus shoppers swear this set of solar string lights is as bright as plug-ins and have lasted for years, confirming the waterproof and shatterproof claims are no joke. (I personally own these sun-powered bulbs, and not even crazy winds, freezing temps, or heavy blankets of pollen have given them a single hiccup for the past two years.)

We love a renovation that brings new life to a home—but we love the ones that boost its value even more. We already know that a spacious yard, a dark gray kitchen, or durable slate floors, for example, will get you more bang for your buck. But according to a recent report by Realtor.com, having a pool can seriously amp up your ROI. When it comes time to sell, you can ask for up to a 20 percent premium in the right city.

The data reveals the demand for swimming pools spiked during the pandemic when quality-of-life amenities were a high priority. And though there was a dip in interest when mortgage rates started climbing in mid-2022, it’s been making a comeback, reaching its highest point this July. Here are the top 10 places where this summertime staple can earn you the most:

1. Fort Myers, Florida: 20.4 percent premium

2. Baton Rouge, Louisiana: 13.9 percent premium

3. Jackson, Mississippi: 11.7 percent premium

4. Dayton, Ohio: 11.6 percent premium

5. Pittsburgh: 11.5 percent premium

6. Wichita, Kansas: 11 percent premium

7. Kansas City, Missouri: 8.9 percent premium

8. Las Vegas: 8.2 percent premium

9. Albuquerque, New Mexico: 7.4 percent premium

10. Knoxville, Tennessee: 7.3 percent premium

If you’re living in a place where the sun’s always shining, a pool can become your personal oasis where you can kick back and soak up the good vibes. Because one costs a good deal of money to construct—about $36,000 on average, according to Angi—and maintain, it makes sense to wrap the existing value into your asking price. If you’ve got one, it’s not just about upgrading your backyard barbecue season, it could mean a splashier return when you’re ready to sell.

There are endless decisions that go into remodeling. So it comes as a huge relief when one of those often overthought choices turns out to be not so complicated (kind of like discovering that reliable, go-to paint color). That’s exactly how I felt when my friend designer Meta Coleman introduced me to maple ball knobs. Not only are they practical and understated, but these low-frill gems are affordable—they range in price from $1.80 to $2.10 each at mom-and-pop hardware stores like Lee Valley

Initially, I purchased a handful of the warm wood knobs for the new built-in dining room cabinets in our ’40s Bay Area bungalow. There was enough contrast in the room as it was, so I needed to simplify somewhere. You can choose from three sizes; I went with the midsize. Before long, I found myself swapping the shiny brass hardware on my bedroom closet doors for more of the same. Later, when we remodeled our office and our children’s bathroom, it wasn’t even a question. I was using them everywhere.

Other Ball Knobs We Like

Unlike traditional hardware, wood ball knobs are easy to customize. You can leave them untreated, brush on a clear coat, stain them, or paint them. And then paint them again and again. Get the idea? Here are some of the many ways you can make them work in your space.

In the Dining Room

Photography by Thomas J. Story

As I mentioned, when we had that set of custom cabinets built for our dining room a couple of years ago, there was already quite a bit happening in the small space: Bunny toile wallpaper. Green trim. Gingham curtains flanking the original French windows. I wanted to maximize all the color, and that meant no interruptions by metal handles or pulls. So I painted the Shaker-style doors and the ball knobs in Farrow & Ball’s gray-green Treron. They add just the right touch of sculptural interest.

In the Bathroom

Photography by Thomas J. Story

For our children’s bathroom remodel, we decided to stick to the original footprint as much as possible, including keeping the vintage pedestal sink and cast-iron tub. We did, however, nix the enclosed shower in favor of drawers and cabinetry. I let my kids choose the wallpaper for the space. Once they settled on this vintage clover wallpaper from Svenskt Tenn, I knew I wanted to paint the storage and trim in Farrow & Ball’s Oval Room Blue, which we had used in our adjacent hallway. By this time, I was familiar with how durable wood ball knobs are, so I was confident they’d hold up to some kid-generated wear and tear. Again, angling for a cohesive look against a busy backdrop, I went with a uniform look that pops off against the white and green foliage. But, who knows, maybe someday I’ll update the knobs in a splashy red hue.

In the Living Room

Photography by Rett Peek

I wasn’t the only one falling for the knobs. Content creator Hannah Carpenter discovered them when our mutual friend, Coleman, suggested them as the pulls for an IKEA hack in her Arkansas home. “They’re great for someone who wants something somewhat special but doesn’t want to spend a million dollars,” says Carpenter. To create storage in the family’s den, she took a pair of pine Ivar sideboards and painted them white. To lend the cabinetry a touch of character, Coleman suggested bun legs from Pretty Pegs and, naturally, complimentary ball knobs.

In the Kitchen

Photography by Rett Peek

When it came to her kitchen, Carpenter was determined to make the same knobs work against a newly painted backdrop of light blue cabinetry. But this time, she didn’t crack open a paint can. “You can paint them a punchy accent or leave them alone and just let them sort of age and get a little darker with use,” she explains. Even with a steady stream of tweens and teens at home, she says her untreated knobs don’t get particularly dirty.

Photography by Brian Overend

The bargain knobs were also the antidote to expensive hardware when stylist and Domino contributing editor Merisa Libbey was refreshing her new-to-her mid-century kitchen in Los Angeles. “I knew we’d be doing some more major renovations down the line and didn’t want to invest ridiculous amounts in making these areas feel better in the meantime,” she says. She was flipping through an old issue of Domino for inspiration when she came across a kitchen featuring an oversize version of the round knobs. She ordered a couple of sizes, testing one in a clear coat and one the same color as her freshly painted cabinets. Ultimately, she went with the former to tie into the oak flooring. “They fit the bill of mixing with my 1950s cupboards while elevating them to a more modern aesthetic,” says Libbey. “I loved them so much, I ended up using them in every room with cabinets—some with paint, some with a natural stain, all supercute.”

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One of the perks of working at Domino is the fact that we look at homes, beautifully individual and dynamic, all day long. And with said perk, we spot commonalities along the way. There are a handful of trademark trends we have grown to expect every season: pastels for spring, vibrant hues for summer, and cozy textures for fall. Then there are those that skew toward the less expected and timeless. Case in point: the best red couches.

A departure from the standard white, beige, or taupe-y seat, this fresh alternative immediately brings a bold dose of color and character to any space. We’ve spotted the primary hue in every shade—from blush and tomato to rust and even rich maroon. And the look is surprisingly more versatile than you may think and can be seamlessly integrated within a wide variety of aesthetics. Below, a closer look at a few of our favorite spaces featuring this particular hue, and how creatives and designers tapped it as the centerpiece of their living quarters or let it blend in with the rest of their decor. Then we share a few shoppable look-alikes (especially if the original was bespoke), to boot.

Armless Red Sofas

In Slash Objects founder Arielle Assouline-Lichten’s Brooklyn studio, this Ligne Roset sofa is an attention-grabbing conversation starter thanks to its bright velvet upholstery. Thankfully it’s also small-space–friendly, making it an appealing pick for apartment dwellers (even if Assouline-Lichten’s lofted space is quite large). The armless, futon-esque frame allows for the creative’s other vintage finds to shine. Our picks, below, also deliver a love seat-like vibe.

Square-Arm Red Sofas

With retro wood paneling as the backdrop, this Reath Design custom sofa covered in a deep red-toned velvet by Kravet makes a straightforward, square-arm design instantly more interesting in Brynn Jones’s home. You can do the same with our favorite sofa brands—Floyd, Lulu and Georgia, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and more all offer a range of reds to dress up their simple frames.

Curved Red Sofas

We’ll never tire of a velvet sofa, especially one that comes in just the right shade of saturated crimson or a softer red-tinted blush. Add to the material a curvy frame that looks and feels like a hug and we’ve pretty much summed up Anthropologie’s Vera sofa, the very one that can be found in Lathan Thomas’s joyful Brooklyn home. As one reviewer so aptly summarizes, “It’s beautiful from every angle.” We tried to channel that feeling into our finds, below.

Statement Red Sofas

Leave it to a former Prada architect to get experimental with living room design. We still think about the custom-made raspberry sofa—with the perfect fringe detail—that Roberto Baciocchi designed himself. The original proves that, sometimes, color is just the start of a standout piece. If you’re seeking a look as unique as Baciocchi’s Tuscany guesthouse, double down on the bold factor by pairing the shade with a funky silhouette, channel-tufting details, or a pattern.

Sleeping used to be something I’d do for comfort. But as I creep toward 40, lying on my stomach has become the only way I can drift off—but also an increasingly agonizing position come morning. Okay, I’ll just say it: When I wake up after lying on my stomach, my lower back feels as though it’s been set on fire.

Years ago, a friend recommended a body pillow as a way to ease into side sleeping, which would help with the lower-back problem, but, um, have you ever seen an attractive body pillow? Lumbar pillows try, but they’re not nearly long enough for my almost-6-foot frame.

So when I stumbled upon the wormlike Buffy Wiggle pillow, I knew I had to get one in my bed and between my arms—fast. Unlike most flat body pillows, which just look like extensions of a boring standard version, the Wiggle is a long tube covered in a cozy-soft faux shearling exterior (it comes in three varying shades of a toasty brown, neutral cream, and pinky coral) that can be removed and thrown in the washing machine. The thing is massive, and at almost 7 feet, it’s longer than the width of my queen-size mattress. At night I use it to cradle my head, and there’s still plenty of room left over for me to wrap my entire body around the rest.

Sure, the Wiggle’s body isn’t that far off from those popular U-shaped pregnancy pillows, but because it’s flexible and floppy, you can tie it up into a trendy knot in the morning and no one will be the wiser that it’s your nighttime snuggle buddy. Plus it and a matching cover—also available in linen—are both 20% off right now during the brand’s back-to-school sale. So you can save anywhere from $15 to $21 on the pair.

After using it for two weeks, my lower back started to feel, well, like nothing. My sleep is sound, and my mornings are more energetic. And thanks to its chic shape and feel, when people ask me why I look so well rested, I can say without a dose of irony: I woke up like this.
