And she wouldn’t compromise on the marble shower.

Shea McGee is used to designing extra-large ranch homes and spacious mountainside retreats. So when her husband and Studio McGee cofounder, Syd, surprised her with a run-down vintage Airstream, she felt a little out of her element. “All of my normal dimensions went out the window,” says Shea. Syd had sought the help of a local Utah Airstream renovation company to track down a van that was big enough for the couple and their three daughters—they happened across the perfect one in Idaho. The camper had been abandoned in someone’s yard, and its mere 180-square-foot interior was in a dire state.

While the design obstacles piled up, Shea was unwilling to compromise on certain elements of comfort, like central AC, a functional kitchen (boat-grade fridge-freezer included), a walk-in shower, and a queen-size bed. Ahead, the designer shares how she packed plenty of style into her smallest reno yet.

Be Light on Your Feet

Shea is used to shopping for sturdy, durable, heavy natural stones and woods for her residential projects, but an Airstream requires the exact opposite. “Everything needs to be lightweight,” she notes. When the camper is in motion on the highway, everything inside shakes as if it’s experiencing an earthquake, which means all the stuff has to be a little bit flexible so it doesn’t snap mid-drive. Exhibit A: While the floor looks like vinyl planks, it’s actually a plastic sheeting with a wood design printed on it.

Feast, Then Sleep

The McGee children’s favorite job come nighttime is pushing the button that lowers the walnut dining table. The surface is set on a motorized stand that allows it to become level with the U-shaped banquette. The next step? Grabbing an extra cushion and—voilà!—you’ve got an extra-large bed that comfortably sleeps three kiddos. Shea took advantage of the space underneath the bench by decking it out with drawers for clothes storage.

Take the Spa on the Road

As you make your way toward the back of the Airstream, you’ll find a bathroom with a marble-tiled walk-in shower—yes, you read that right. “I really wanted marble,” insists Shea. She knew the Airstream had strict weight limitations, so she ran the numbers and compromised on the aforementioned flooring and plywood cabinetry. Still, the stone-covered shower couldn’t stand on its own, it needed something to balance it on the other side of the vehicle. Cue the Caesarstone vanity countertop.

Defy the Layout and Lighting Tropes

Shea took every other opportunity she could to make the teeny home-on-wheels feel high-end. This included brass light fixtures from Visual Comfort and a queen-size bed that faces the rear. “A lot of RVs have a bed that’s turned to the side, so you can only get in on one end. I didn’t like the look,” she says. Someone also recommended going with a full—she said no way. The headboard is made out of superthin wood, wrapped in foam, and affixed to the end of the trailer.

A good night’s rest is essential after a day with the McGees’ mobile. The family fills their afternoons with hiking to get everyone’s energy out after sitting in the trailer, followed by campfire meals and s’mores. “We set up the beds and go to sleep, and then hope everyone stays asleep,” Shea says with a laugh.

If you still have the image of Monica Geller from Friends in mind when you think of Courteney Cox, you’re mostly on the right track. The actor is known for being pretty obsessed with cleanliness in real life, so much so that she launched a line of home fragrances and cleaning products last year. But unlike her beloved character, Cox isn’t as much of a control freak. “I’m not a minimalist,” she says. “I like my home to feel inviting and cozy.” In fact, she’s amassed an impressive collection of vintage pieces and just partnered with Chairish to sell several of them on the site.

As for what you can expect from Cox’s curation, there’s a bit of everything, from Art Deco items to mid-century finds to globally sourced pieces. “My taste is ever-changing, but there are certain fundamentals I’m always attracted to: pieces with texture and beautiful craftsmanship but also with a unique history,” she shares. Her favorites are going fast, but we’ve rounded up a few that are still up for grabs.

Soft Landing

Use this chocolatey mohair throw to prop you up on the sofa after a long day or upgrade your sleep setup; either way, it’s bound to infuse a dose of character to any space.

Roaring Good Time

One part industrial, one part Great Gatsby, this cast-iron lamp from the early 20th century isn’t just functional, it’s a statement piece on any desk thanks to its Art Deco base.

Three’s Company

There are three of these wood-inlay cubes in Cox’s collection. At $600 a pop, even one is a splurge, but the Italian-made chevron design definitely makes a statement as a trio.

Off the—Er, Her—Shelf

This vintage French bookshelf is one of Cox’s personal favorites. The five-tier cherrywood unit lived in her bedroom for years and now it can live in yours.

In This City, a Pool Will Boost Your Home Value 12% Higher Than Average https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/best-cities-pool-value/ Thu, 10 Aug 2023 19:19:14 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=304939

And nine other swimmingly great places.

We love a renovation that brings new life to a home—but we love the ones that boost its value even more. We already know that a spacious yard, a dark gray kitchen, or durable slate floors, for example, will get you more bang for your buck. But according to a recent report by Realtor.com, having a pool can seriously amp up your ROI. When it comes time to sell, you can ask for up to a 20 percent premium in the right city.

The data reveals the demand for swimming pools spiked during the pandemic when quality-of-life amenities were a high priority. And though there was a dip in interest when mortgage rates started climbing in mid-2022, it’s been making a comeback, reaching its highest point this July. Here are the top 10 places where this summertime staple can earn you the most:

1. Fort Myers, Florida: 20.4 percent premium

2. Baton Rouge, Louisiana: 13.9 percent premium

3. Jackson, Mississippi: 11.7 percent premium

4. Dayton, Ohio: 11.6 percent premium

5. Pittsburgh: 11.5 percent premium

6. Wichita, Kansas: 11 percent premium

7. Kansas City, Missouri: 8.9 percent premium

8. Las Vegas: 8.2 percent premium

9. Albuquerque, New Mexico: 7.4 percent premium

10. Knoxville, Tennessee: 7.3 percent premium

If you’re living in a place where the sun’s always shining, a pool can become your personal oasis where you can kick back and soak up the good vibes. Because one costs a good deal of money to construct—about $36,000 on average, according to Angi—and maintain, it makes sense to wrap the existing value into your asking price. If you’ve got one, it’s not just about upgrading your backyard barbecue season, it could mean a splashier return when you’re ready to sell.

71% of Homeowners Admit to Judging Their Neighbors for This Easy-to-Fix Yard Issue https://www.domino.com/design-by-room/curb-appeal-in-neighborhoods/ Wed, 09 Aug 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=304659

Four ways to stay on everyone’s good side.

Thou shalt love thy neighbor…unless that neighbor’s home exterior needs a paint job and a good weed whacking. Thumbtack recently teamed up with Nextdoor to survey more than 1,000 homeowners across the country to find out how much they value curb appeal and how it affects their neighborhoods (and neighborly relationships). Seventy-one percent of respondents claimed having terrible curb appeal would impact their relationship with a neighbor in at least one major way

So you leave your trash cans at the end of the driveway for one day too long. Will everyone on your street detest you for it? Probably not. According to the report, the biggest curb appeal faux pas are trash in the yard; an overgrown lawn; parking old cars, RVs, vans, or boats out front; and a home’s exterior needing a wash or paint job. Luckily, aside from finding another place to park any extra joy rides, all of these no-no’s can be easily addressed. Thumbtack’s data reveals it’ll cost you only $5,000 for a light curb appeal boost. Here are a few of those key updates it suggests for getting on everyone’s good side:

Replace the Front Door

Is the focal point of your facade dragging everything down? Consider swapping your door for a new one, which will cost you an average $473 according to Thumbtack. When Australian designers Daniel To and Emma Aiston renovated their 1910 house, they enlarged the opening to make way for a supersize sunny yellow entrance that screams “happy to be here.”

Trim Back Shrubs and Plant Flowers

Regular mowing is only one step toward a manicured yard. Give your boxwoods and azaleas that just-planted look by cutting any growth you don’t want, focusing on the inner limbs that need air and sunlight to thrive, like designer Luke Havekes did at his cozy cottage. Once you’ve got a handle on that, introduce new flowers (an average of $667).

Add Outdoor Lighting and Stain the Deck

If you’re willing to invest a little more, make your house shine by installing sconces on either side of your door or a pendant light on the porch (approximately $947). A sleek-looking deck that’s either stained or painted will run you around the same cost, and when in doubt, stick to a simple black and white combo like Cassie Winslow’s dreamy Sacramento home

In a delightful reminder that celebrities are just like us, actor Tracee Ellis Ross recently shared a candid moment from her laundry room: figuring out how to wash a brand-new dress for the first time. Known for her impeccable style and impressive wardrobe, Ross is no stranger to hand-washing, but this time she was navigating how to properly launder linen.

In the video, Ross explains that the summery Prada piece is made 100 percent from the natural fabric, and because it is a luxury item, it’s crucial to take good care of it.  Without the help of a personal assistant or housekeeper, she did what any of us would do: She researched the best way to wash linen online. In her post, she shared some valuable tips for ensuring that the material retains its charm after each wash.

Lavender and Rose Linen Wash

First? Hand-wash the textile in room-temperature water. Ross used a “teeny little bit” of the Diamond Life’s Lavender and Rose Linen Wash (a 16-ounce bottle goes for a cool $14, but it can also be used on other delicate items like Egyptian/Turkish cotton sheets) and let it soak a bit. While she explicitly states you should not wring out this material, she responded to followers that she did roll the item up in a big towel and stand on it to absorb some of the excess water before laying it out flat to air-dry. And that’s it. An unexpected laundry lesson from a style icon is always welcome.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t stop thinking about the Manhattan apartment of RHONY‘s latest cast member, Brynn Whitfield, especially since it’s filled with budget-friendly gems, including this Amazon score. The arched style from Brightech, which usually goes for $215, is now 21% off over at the mass e-tailer (and should be eligible for an additional 10% off coupon). Aside from looking stunning in the living room of Whitfield’s single-family brownstone, this affordable floor lamp is revered by 2,000-plus reviewers for being “solidly built,” “big and handsome,” and “great quality,” down to its genuine marble base. In other words, it earns major points from us for looking far more expensive than it actually is.

Pack and Go: $50 Off Travel Cribs at Guava

packable travel crib
Lotus Travel Crib, Guava ($230 was $280)

For trips to Grandma’s house a few blocks over or cross-country vacations, a portable crib is essential, but not all are exactly…good-looking. Guava’s Lotus, on the other hand, offers the best of both worlds. And it’s now $50 off for a limited time. You can tote this compact, airport-friendly crib like a backpack (it’s only 15 pounds) thanks to a pair of padded straps, freeing your hands up to push a stroller or suitcase. “I traveled solo via plane with my three kids, and it was so easy to break down, pack, carry, unpack, etc. by myself,” one reviewer writes. Another adds it’s simply a great tool to transition from co-sleeping. And most others confirm that every expectant parent it was gifted to was thrilled.

Quick-Ship Sofas: 20% Off Sitewide at Apt2B

gray two-seater sofa
Camden Storage Sofa, Apt2B ($1,790 was $2,238)

Apt2B’s Friends and Family Flash Sale is in full swing. That means in addition to the entire site being 20% off, if you spend more than $3,999 (say, on a new sofa) through August 14, your order ships with a free tabletop firepit from Solo Stove. We do want to note that everything at the online retailer is made to order, which means shipping times can be long. If patience isn’t your strong suit, we’d recommend limiting your search to the quick-ship section only, where we spotted the Camden storage sofa (which will also arrive free of charge).

In other words, this promotion arrives just in time to stock up on last-minute dorm room linens. All you have to do is pop in the code BACK2SCHOOL. Made with 100% organic bamboo, the latter pairs a breathable weave with a diagonal rib for added drape and extra durability. “This is the third round of twill sheet set purchases for us,” writes an enthusiastic reviewer. “They are soft with a nice weight and have held up extremely well to regular laundering.”

We were thrilled to learn that Casper’s new hybrid cooling pillow is included in the brand’s current back-to-school promotion. Through August 8, if you’re a slide-slash-back sleeper who runs hot at night, the 10% off headrest could definitely be a fit for you (we say it’s at least worth giving a try, since all of Casper’s pillows come with a free 30-night trial run). In fact, when three of our shopping editors brought it home for themselves, two loved it enough to keep.

For Picky Pillow People: Up to 30% Off Pillows at Marlow

For a limited time, select items are up to 40% off, including its giftable sling bag in a cheerful sunshiny yellow. The water-resistant, ripstop shell is roomy enough to fit a water bottle, gel snacks, wallet, keys, and more without feeling too heavy. A mesh-padded back doubles down on the comfort, no matter if you’re hitting the trails or running errands.

Table Linens: Up to 49% Off Waffle Tabletop at Parachute

The linen napkins, runner, and tablecloth are all up to 49% off for a limited time and handmade in Portugal like the rest of Parachute’s linen bedding. Reviewers reveal the pieces “wash well and are easy for everyday use” and dress up any table with a little laid-back flare. Another shopper adds they’re cozy and classy, a combo we can get behind.

Through August 8, you can take $400 off the Lux Estate, Lux Hybrid, and Reserve mattresses from Stearns & Foster. But these aren’t just any old beds; well-reviewed and loved, the Lux Estate, for instance, has a nearly 5-star rating for its enhanced, pressure-relief memory foam wrapped in a cooling cover. It’s described by multiple reviewers as “our most comfortable bed ever.” And another writes, “Don’t have to toss and turn to find a comfortable spot. A wonderfully supportive bed.”

In the vast realm of the Internet, Reddit has long established itself as a hub for solution seekers. From self-diagnosing your medical mysteries (which we don’t recommend) to discovering the most clever IKEA hacks (this we can get behind), the platform is a treasure trove of information. Amid the countless threads, a recent r/AskReddit post earned a top five ranking the other week after one user asked: What life-changing thing can you buy for less than $100? Tens of thousands chimed in with their picks, and several home products were at the top. According to Reddit, these are some of the most sought-after, budget-savvy products you can buy.

For Better Bathroom Breaks

You either love it or hate it, but if you’re Team Bidet, you already know there’s no going back to a regular seat once you’ve installed one of these refreshing toilet attachments. One Redditor even says they’re ready to hook one up at work at this point. Another 5,000 users agreed that a Squatty Potty (or its equivalent) is the other accessory you absolutely need in the loo.

For Breathing Easy

While smoke alarms often steal the spotlight, a carbon monoxide detector (clocking in with 10,000 votes) should also earn a permanent place on our home safety checklists. This plug-in model from Kidde tracks air quality as well, and the battery backup means it’ll keep protecting you from sneaky, odorless gas, even if the power goes out.

For Staying Connected

Size matters. At least when it comes to charging cables, and more than 18,000 Redditors concur: You need a 10-foot (or longer!) power cord in your life so you can freely surf the ‘net or scroll your Instagram without ever having to be within arm’s reach of an outlet.

For Keeping Things Cheesy

When it comes to chain restaurants, Olive Garden is the epitome of comfort food, and there’s nothing quite like a generous heap of grated cheese to make a meal cozier than ever. We found this chic charcoal gray version at Williams Sonoma, and the best part? Having it at home means you never have to utter the words “okay, that’s enough” before you truly mean it.

Lighting can make or break a room—accent fixtures set the mood for romantic weeknight dinners, dim ultra-low for Netflix marathons, or make it easy to read in bed. To add a ceiling light or wall sconce, you likely have to hire an electrician. For a table lamp, you need an empty surface such as a nightstand. But a floor lamp? All it requires is a square foot of floor space, which most of us have.

Even better, the style is versatile enough to illuminate any nook or cranny: where you read, where you work, and even a dark hallway. But the well-made lookers can be pricey, and it takes time and energy to sift through the category to find the hidden gems. We took the plunge and came up with task masters, fabric shades of all sorts, natural materials, and modern takes aplenty—all under $500. Read on for our top picks of each type.

Task Floor Lamps

From a reader-favorite dimmable pharmacy style to a 61% off arc option and other marked-down pieces, these are proof that budget floor lamps don’t have to be cookie-cutter.

Traditional Floor Lamps

Give a corner a classy look with one of these traditional styles—there are brass finishes, fabric shades, and swing arms. We’re particularly fond of the Thomas O’Brien–designed Beckham model from Visual Comfort, but Brightech’s arched number, spotted in RHONY Star Brynn Whitfield’s Manhattan apartment, is a worthy runner-up for looking more expensive than it actually is.

Wicker and Raffia Floor Lamps

Wicker and raffia both lend texture and materiality to a space, whether that’s in a piece of furniture or, as is the case here, a lampshade or base.

Modern Floor Lamps

Whether you’re going all in on the squiggly trend or adding a superpop of color to a bedroom corner, modern floor lamps offer everything from streamline silhouettes to quirky touches.

For years, we’ve looked across the Atlantic with envy as Europe enjoyed the well-appointed and better-priced offerings from H&M Home. Sure, we’ve had access to the smaller decor and textiles like its colorful striped bedding and quick-to-sell-out designer rugs, but when it comes to furniture we’ve always felt left out. Luckily the wait is finally over. H&M Home has announced its long-awaited arrival in the U.S., bringing its budget-friendly furniture (including kids’!) across the pond on August 24.

The line, which ranges from $27 to $491, was first introduced to the European market in 2018 with a selection of side tables, chairs, stools, lamps, and mirrors. The collection’s O.G. pieces like the rattan dining chair and solid mango wood side table will soon be available to shop online and in stores across the brand’s U.S. locations.

Just in time for fall, new arrivals will include seasonal variations of the classics mentioned above and fresh products in on-trend colors. We’ve heard you can expect to see everything from streamlined wood benches with steel details to playful pieces featuring cloud-inspired edges. Little ones won’t be left out with long-lasting items like a multifunctional desk with a matching storage bench and mini lounge chairs on the way. Mark your calendar and start shifting your mindset from envy to excitement.
