With all kinds of fashion retailers getting in on the home game these days, there are more sources than ever for stylish furniture, decor, and gifts. While the likes of Net-a-Porter and Matches Fashion have the luxury market cornered, we turn to Ssense’s sale section when we’re looking for something with a little edge on a tighter budget. The Montreal-based e-tailer never fails to capture our attention with its expanding home edit, placing supersmall runs from emerging designers next to classics such as Alessi and Georg Jensen and contemporary staples like Sophie Lou Jacobsen and Hay.

One of our favorite features? You can sort the discounted finds by highest or lowest percentage off, which makes finding the very best deals that much easier. Another callout we pay special attention to: anything marked final sale. Here are the discounted picks we’re eyeing right now.

Very Nice Tableware for Even Nicer Prices

If you’re looking for statement flatware, stoneware bowls, or “where’d you get that?”–inducing platters, you’ve come to the right place. There‘s discounted pasta bowls, Sophie Lou Jacobsen pitchers, minimalist charcuterie boards, and more.

Cool-Girl Bath, Marked Down

When it comes to its bath assortment, Ssense prioritizes the quality of the material, so you know anything in the sale section is going to feel luxurious (even if you paid less than $100 for it). Right now, you can score 29% off a melon-hued Hay towel, 50% off a Sunnei water glass/toothbrush holder, and 30% off a dimpled Marloe Marloe vanity set.

Decor Deals We’re Slacking Each Other About

The decor at Ssense varies from zany and wildly colorful to extremely pared back. Whether you’re a minimalist or maximalist, some of our of-the-moment favorites are 30% off—that includes a Bode blanket, Toogood pitcher, Rhea Kalo candle, and Nude Glass lidded vessel.

Shocking On-Sale Wellness Goods We’ll Be Picking Up ASAP

Gone are the days of hiding your workout and wind-down gear in a closet. We’re hedging our bets you’ll be keeping these beautiful (and extremely functional) pieces on display. What’s more is that they’d all be worth paying full price for—and here, they’re up to 30% off.

Deals on Kids’ Products Even We’re Coveting

We track what’s cool for kids on a monthly basis, but Ssense always has pages of design-y children’s products on sale to scan. Right now, it’s packed with back-to-school specials on Technicolor K-Way backpacks (62% off!) and fall-forward additions from Misha & Puff and Mini Rodini.

All Alessi, All on Sale

You can always count on some Alessi on sale at Ssense. Whether it’s melamine serving dishes ideal for alfresco dining or a set of six elegant white teacups marked down by 30%, we are coveting it all.

We’re usually of the mindset that any time is a good time to snag a steep discount on our favorite mattresses, pillows, and sheet sets, but brands definitely save the steepest discounts for the holiday weekends. Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July all prove it. And with Labor Day barreling toward us, we’ve caught wind of sitewide price slashes and exclusive promo codes trickling in. We’re taking it as a sign to keep tabs on the best bedding sales, all neatly organized in alphabetical order, below. The plan is to add to our list of favorites as more promotions pop up.  So go ahead, clear out room in your linen closet for a refresh.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One of the perks of working at Domino is the fact that we look at homes, beautifully individual and dynamic, all day long. And with said perk, we spot commonalities along the way. There are a handful of trademark trends we have grown to expect every season: pastels for spring, vibrant hues for summer, and cozy textures for fall. Then there are those that skew toward the less expected and timeless. Case in point: the best red couches.

A departure from the standard white, beige, or taupe-y seat, this fresh alternative immediately brings a bold dose of color and character to any space. We’ve spotted the primary hue in every shade—from blush and tomato to rust and even rich maroon. And the look is surprisingly more versatile than you may think and can be seamlessly integrated within a wide variety of aesthetics. Below, a closer look at a few of our favorite spaces featuring this particular hue, and how creatives and designers tapped it as the centerpiece of their living quarters or let it blend in with the rest of their decor. Then we share a few shoppable look-alikes (especially if the original was bespoke), to boot.

Armless Red Sofas

In Slash Objects founder Arielle Assouline-Lichten’s Brooklyn studio, this Ligne Roset sofa is an attention-grabbing conversation starter thanks to its bright velvet upholstery. Thankfully it’s also small-space–friendly, making it an appealing pick for apartment dwellers (even if Assouline-Lichten’s lofted space is quite large). The armless, futon-esque frame allows for the creative’s other vintage finds to shine. Our picks, below, also deliver a love seat-like vibe.

Square-Arm Red Sofas

With retro wood paneling as the backdrop, this Reath Design custom sofa covered in a deep red-toned velvet by Kravet makes a straightforward, square-arm design instantly more interesting in Brynn Jones’s home. You can do the same with our favorite sofa brands—Floyd, Lulu and Georgia, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and more all offer a range of reds to dress up their simple frames.

Curved Red Sofas

We’ll never tire of a velvet sofa, especially one that comes in just the right shade of saturated crimson or a softer red-tinted blush. Add to the material a curvy frame that looks and feels like a hug and we’ve pretty much summed up Anthropologie’s Vera sofa, the very one that can be found in Lathan Thomas’s joyful Brooklyn home. As one reviewer so aptly summarizes, “It’s beautiful from every angle.” We tried to channel that feeling into our finds, below.

Statement Red Sofas

Leave it to a former Prada architect to get experimental with living room design. We still think about the custom-made raspberry sofa—with the perfect fringe detail—that Roberto Baciocchi designed himself. The original proves that, sometimes, color is just the start of a standout piece. If you’re seeking a look as unique as Baciocchi’s Tuscany guesthouse, double down on the bold factor by pairing the shade with a funky silhouette, channel-tufting details, or a pattern.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

If you grew up in the early aughts, you likely have vivid memories of hanging out on a cartoon-covered blob. We’re happy to report that the best couches for kids nowadays are no longer limited to those garishly hued numbers. In fact, today’s kid-friendly furniture could easily be mistaken for miniature love seats, and they’re durable, too. While we know of a few designer hacks to make adult-size furniture childproof (hello, FiberSeal), isn’t there something special about providing a designated spot for toddlers and tweens, whether for snacking, reading, or keying up a good old-fashioned puppet show? Besides, while our list of the best couches for kids varies greatly in shape (we’re talking beanbag sofas and modular foam that looks more like building blocks), none should cramp your interior style.

Our Favorites

Best for Playtime: Brentwood Home Play Couch

Sofas photo
Play Couch, Brentwood Home ($315, was $349)
Shop

Material: Recycled polyester and nylon | Dimensions: Varies | Fill: High-density foam

What we like:

  • 30-day risk-free trial
  • Greenguard Gold certified
  • 6 colorful covers that are removable and machine washable
  • Made with vegetable-derived foam and petroleum-free fabrics

Worth noting:

  • On the pricier side

Why we chose it: A modular sofa with configurations limited only by your child’s imagination.

While Jill Singer of Sight Unseen enlisted the help of Keren and Thomas Richter of White Arrow to custom-make child-size foam building blocks (think: oversize rectangles, triangles, and cylinders) to outfit her family’s Hamptons basement, you can enjoy a similar setup right off the shelf with Brentwood Home’s Play Couch. Offering two more pieces than the cult-favorite Nugget, this set of six can come together in the shape of a classic couch, with back cushions and sheltered arms, or be configured into pretty much anything your child puts their mind to, though reviewers most often revere its seemingly endless fort possibilities.

Best for Movie Nights: West Elm Kids Flip Floor Sleeper

Sofas photo
Flip Floor Sleeper, West Elm ($550 and up)
Shop

Material: Varies | Dimensions: 71-by-33-by-21.5 inches | Fill: Polyurethane foam

What we like:

  • Adjustable to lay flat or sit upright
  • Long enough to sit 3

Worth noting:

  • Heavy—60 pounds, to be exact
  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: The slouchy silhouette of a beanbaglike floor pillow embodies that notion of cool and comfortable that will transition with your child.

Keep a floor sofa in the kids-only zone (like designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell did) as a crash pad for Disney marathons. While Velten-Lattrell’s original buy from Urban Outfitters is no longer available, this West Elm alternative is a pretty close second. Plan to plop it in front of a TV or projector screen for Saturday-morning cartoons or weekend movie nights (and if buttery popcorn happens to be the snack of choice, you can choose from a swath of performance fabrics, including distressed velvet, tweed, and washed canvas).

Best for a Reading Nook: Crate & Kids Rattan Kids Twin Daybed

Sofas photo
Rattan Kids Twin Daybed, Crate&Barrel ($1,000)
Shop

Material: Rattan | Dimensions: 85-by-42-by-36 inches | Fill: N/A

What we like:

  • Solid wood slats
  • Adjustable iron legs (helpful if you have sloped floors!)
  • Endless design possibilities, just add sheets and pillows

Worth noting:

  • You’ll need to supply the mattress
  • Biggest option on the list

Why we chose it: It’ll fit a twin mattress or two couch cushions, so it’s easy to switch up the color or pattern of whatever sheets or duvet cover you swaddle it with.

Technically this is a daybed, but if you place enough pillows (to do double duty as back- and armrests), it’s worthy of our list of the best couches for kids. Keep a fully stacked library within reach and it’ll become an irresistible spot to snuggle up with their latest Scholastic find. And no harm is done if they doze off (it just so happens to be Heather Taylor’s children’s sleeping spot in their Laurel Canyon home). Plus the sturdy iron-base frame and legs won’t buckle if your child doesn’t exactly happen to have the best track record with the “no jumping on the bed” rule.

Best for Game Rooms: Urban Outfitters Roma Sofa

green and wavy wood sofa
Roma Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($1,299)
Shop

Material: Polyester, rubberwood, and plywood | Dimensions: 74.8-by-33.5-by-30 inches | Fill: Rayon foam

What we like:

  • Trendy, wavy cut frame that feels whimsical and modern
  • Tall leg height (nearly 7 inches) to easily slide and store stacks of board games under

Worth noting:

  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: An unexpected design that can hold its own in the same space as a table tennis tournament.

We may have only caught a glimpse of the Roma Sofa hanging out in the ultra-cool game room of a recent Studio DB–designed New Jersey beach house, but we can’t unsee it as a perfect hangout spot. The playful wavy wood frame adds a touch of whimsy, but the full two-seater offers deep, 26-inch cushions roomy enough for siblings, friends, and visitors alike. It’s an unexpected, kid-friendly find, but likely ideal for an older crowd.

Best for Sleepovers: Made Haru Sofa

Sofas photo
Haru Sofa, Made ($383)
Shop

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16-by-47-by-20 inches | Fill: Polyethylene

What we like:

  • Mid-century angled wood legs
  • Transitions from love seat to sofa bed
  • The choice between velvet and canvas

Worth noting:

  • Long lead times (ships from the U.K.)
  • Professional cleaning only

Why we chose it: This compact cutie unfolds from lounger to sofa bed in seconds.

This sofa might just be impossible to grow out of, as it’s a small space saver that’ll earn the approval of guests of any age. We first spotted the model in this attic–turned–kids’ room on England’s Kent coast, where it’s an essential part of the seat setup. Its first form is incredibly compact, taking up barely any square footage thanks to a 20-inch depth that’s still long enough to fit two kids, before extending out a full 71 inches, aka longer than a twin. Though we’d keep the back part up for a quasi-tufted headboard.

Best for All Ages: Article Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat

boucle love seat
Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat, Article ($699)
Shop

Material: Bouclé, solid wood | Dimensions: 31-by-64-by-34 inches | Fill: Foam

What we like:

  • Solid wood frame (sturdy!)
  • Removable covers and legs
  • Covered in a low-absorption bouclé

Worth noting:

  • On the firmer side, rather than superplushy

Why we chose it: For a style that’ll grow with your kiddos (and that you can enjoy right along with them).

You don’t have to be 10 or younger to enjoy Article’s Gabriola love seat, and that’s exactly why it’s now one of our favorite kid couches. This is the kind of child-friendly sofa that has staying power—it’s large enough for parents or babysitters to enjoy throughout the younger years, and the compact silhouette is suitable for small spaces and little legs. It’s one of the very first pieces of furniture you’ll see when entering designer Erin Fetherston’s L.A. home; her front door opens up next to her kids’ playroom. Fetherston removed the slatted legs, which gives the Gabriola a superlow profile and makes it even easier for her three children to climb up and down from. (A smart tip: The legs can always go back on when the gang is older.)

On Our Radar

P’Kolino Litte Reader Sofa

Little Reader chair in red
P’Kolino Little Reader Sofa, Maisonette ($170)
Shop

This sofa would be the perfect addition to any reading nook, and we’re not just saying that because the side arms feature a built-in pocket to keep your kiddo’s favorite books within close reach. The cushy foam base is wrapped up in stain-resistant fabrics and offers an angular silhouette perfect for sitting up on. And bonus: The middle can fold out into a sleeper for impromptu naps or playtime.

Pottery Barn Teen x West Elm Carmen Sofa

Sofas photo
Carmen Sofa, West Elm ($599)
Shop

This floor sofa can be wrapped up in either a velvety performance fabric, nubby bouclé, or neutral twill that will easily transition from the toddler to tween years.

Gray Malin x Cloth Company Settee

Sofas photo
Settee, Gray Malin x Cloth Company ($1,350)
Shop

For a touch of whimsy and heirloom-level quality—we’re talking 100% cotton upholstery and solid wood legs—Maisonette’s made-to-order settee offers a storybook-like illustration pattern that feels fantastical but not too childish. Seriously, we can see your kids passing this one down to their children (and so on and so forth).

Milliard Modular Kids Sofa

Sofas photo
Modular Kids Sofa, Milliard ($160)
Shop

At a quick glance, you’d never guess this small sofa could be dismantled into a bed, lightweight poufs, ottomans, and even a puppet theater. Other review-backed perks: The velour cover is removable and machine washable, and the whole thing arrives in one vacuum-sealed package. Did we mention it’s less than $200?

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

As they’re designed with little humans in mind, the best couches for kids are compact and low-profile, even sitting directly on the ground. Smaller dimensions make it easier for toddlers to crawl on and off safely, especially since playtime inevitably dissolves into roughhousing.

Easy-to-Clean Materials

Spills and stains are bound to happen anytime kids are involved, which is why designers often pick out tight-patterned, textured, or dark fabrics for sofas, as they’re better at hiding the marks that refuse to come out after you’ve tried blotting them up with soap, water, and vinegar without success. Psst: Leather and velvet are actually more durable than parents think, and the real deal will develop a lovely patina over time.

Durability

As we’ve confirmed: Kids are messy. They somehow always seem to have their hands in something, and no matter if you watched them diligently wash their hands, their fingers are still sticky from that peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich at lunch. That’s why we recommend going with performance fabrics. In fact, sofas aside, many designers will opt for tough textiles when upholstering a window-seat cushion or banquette (for example, Kate Hayes of Little Hayes Studio chose an indoor-outdoor–approved fabric from Schumacher for a preteen room). They’re less likely to get threadbare or tear. High-density foam filling is also important to note, as regular foam will more easily misshape with age (though if you don’t plan to keep them for longer than your kid outgrows them, this isn’t a detail to get too hung up on).

The Last Word

The best couches for kids are designed to be the go-to seat for your children from the toddler to tween years. This is the place they’ll (hopefully) go to read, eat a snack, or (let’s face it) binge-watch Peppa Pig on their tablet, so it needs to be as comfy as it is durable.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

A good desk chair with great back support is a key element in any workspace. But a great desk chair? It provides not just strong lumbar support but has that elusive element: style. Whether they’re bold and colorful or techy and almost futuristic, an ideal desk chair ties a home office together while helping you be your best professional self.

And, yes, the same goes for kids’ desk chairs but with a few notable differences. The importance of ergonomic elements—armrests and backrests, tilting seats, and adjustable heights—are usually lost on petite bodies and active minds. Compared to adults, kids typically have a more dynamic schedule (how many times do they jump up or settle down in an hour?!) and engage in a broader range of activities. “Kids don’t tend to need hard-core ergonomic design with added lumbar support and all the bells and whistles that some adult office chairs come with,” says California-based Megan Dufresne of interior design firm MC Design. But with that said, children do still need a comfy seat that provides at least some degree of support, so we searched the market for the best kids’ desk chairs, from easy-to-clean metal to comfy and cushioned. (Note: All dimensions are given as height-by-width-by-depth.)

Our Favorites

target swivel chair for kids in navy
Pillowfort Rolling Desk Chair, Target ($80)
Shop

Material:  Powder-coated metal, wood, polyester | 26.5-by-20.5-by-21 inches | Additional features: Cushioned seat

What we like:

  • Affordable task chair
  • Great neutral colors to choose from (beige white, moody navy, blush pink)
  • A breeze to assemble
  • Clean, minimal design with low upkeep

Worth noting:

  • Fixed height
  • Light amount of cushion

Why we chose it: This chair’s 360-degree swivel ability and approachable price tag hook shoppers with one spin.

From Target’s Pillowfort collection, a collaboration with award-winning children’s book illustrator and author Christian Robinson, comes this kids’ desk chair that is light and durable thanks to its powder-coated metal body and seat. While you might think that the benefits of a wheeled chair—switching from side to side of a large desk, moving from computer monitor to computer monitor—might be lost on a child, we’re here to tell you that the functionality of a swivel is for everyone. “Although younger kids will benefit more from the stability of a fixed chair, older children who are starting to multitask will benefit from a swivel chair,” says Mark Cutler of Los Angeles–based interior design firm Cutler Schulze. We love that the simple design, paired up with smooth-rolling casters, is priced at under $100. Make it matchy-matchy with a coordinating desk from the same line, switch it up with a different color, or pair it with something else entirely.

Best Mixed Materials: West Elm Scoop Play Chair

play chair
Scoop Play Chair, West Elm ($89)
Shop

Material: Bentwood, steel | Dimensions: 18.5-by-14-by-27 inches | Additional features: Lightweight

What we like:

  • Thoughtful mixture of materials
  • A rainbow range of fun color choices (like horseradish and sapphire ice)
  • Sold individually or as a set of two

Worth noting:

  • Sized with younger children in mind

Why we chose it: A joyful pop of color and mixed materials make this a classic style fit for kids.

There’s something about the mix of color and materials that feels just right with this streamlined design from West Elm. The playful Scoop, painted in water-based, nontoxic paint, nods to adult-size mid-century modern designs. The curvy bentwood seat paired with slim metal legs in a matching hue is structured with younger kiddos in mind and made to be easy to clean. Tuck it under a wood desk, add multiple at a craft table, or even place one alone in a corner for a good book nook. We also love that West Elm shares that it has been rigorously tested to meet all voluntary safety standards.

Best Colors: Ferm Living Little Architect Chair

Ferm Living Little Architect Chair Domino
Ferm Living Little Architect Chair in Dark Blue, Burke Decor ($185)
Shop

Material: Solid ash wood and ash veneer with MDF core | Dimensions: 20.5-by-13-by-12 inches | Additional features: Lots of colors and matching desks

What we like:

  • Available in 8 colors
  • Solid ash-wood construction
  • Coordinates with other pieces in the Little Architect collection

Worth noting:

  • Seat height of 12 inches is sized for children under age 10
  • Does not provide lower-back support for longer hours of sitting

Why we chose it: All the benefits of a solid wood desk chair with the fun of eight different colors, ranging from bold hues to refined neutrals.

We’re suckers for the clean lines and color options of Dutch purveyor Ferm Living and its Little Architect line of furniture, which includes a table, desk, bench, and chair. The collection has been designed so that the pieces (and colors) can be mixed and matched, thanks to their consistent proportions and palette. This chair is available in eight hues: bordeaux red, dark green, dark blue, rose pink, medium gray, taupe cashmere, and poppy red. It has a bar back and no arms, making it easy to slide in and out under the matching desk or table.

Best Silhouette: Oeuf Bear Play Chair

bear chair
Bear Play Chair, Set Of 2, Oeuf ($224 was $320)
Shop

Material: Plywood | Dimensions: 11.75-by-13.5-by-24 inches | Additional features: Customize the look with Play Stickers

What we like:

  • Sturdy construction of plywood
  • Sustainably made in Europe and ships in recycled packaging
  • Choice between natural birch and white or walnut and white

Worth noting:

  • For children ages 2 to 6

Why we chose it: This desk chair sporting ears plays up its plywood construction.

They say design is in the details, and that’s definitely the case for this kids’ desk chair by Brooklyn-based, French-inspired furniture and clothing brand Oeuf. You likely recognize its statement-making silhouette from Studio AF founder Arielle Fried’s nursery-slash-office; the curved back, made of Baltic birch plywood, is cut in the shape of bear or rabbit ears. What’s more adorable than that?

Best Wood: Industry West Tike Kid’s Chair

wood desk chair
Tike Kid’s Chair, Industry West ($125)
Shop

Material: Beechwood | Dimensions: 14.9-by-16.3-by-22.2 inches | Additional features: Handmade

What we like:

  • 5-year warranty
  • Doubles as a dining chair
  • 20% off right now with the code SUMMER

Worth noting:

  • On the pricey side
  • Can retain spills

Why we chose it: An all-wood frame with rounded corners (no bumps or bruises here).

At first glance, you wouldn’t know this chair was kid-size until you inspected the dimensions—and that’s exactly why we love it. That and the fact that its entire frame is 100% real beechwood. It’s actually a scaled-down version of Industry West’s popular dining chair, Tike. The natural light finish keeps it looking elegant, and the 22.2-inch height makes it easy for your toddler to pull this one up to a desk or dinner table.  Multifunctionality for the win.

Best Retro: Crate & Kids Lennon Molded Kids Play Chair

lennon chair
Lennon Yellow Molded Kids Play Chair, Crate&kids ($49)
Shop

Material: Plastic, steel | Dimensions: 15.5-by-17.5-by-22.5 inches | Additional features: Pair it with the play tables

What we like:

  • Comfy and supportive
  • Ergonomic mold
  • Easy to care for
  • Comes in blue, gray, white, and yellow

Worth noting:

  • Might be tricky to put together (as one nonhandy grandmother notes)

Why we love it: We love the charm, colors, and overall cuteness of this nostalgic desk chair.

While we love Leanne Ford’s bouclé cushioned miniature chair for Crate & Barrel—peep it in the playroom of Erin Fetherston’s L.A.  home—we’re really into this well-reviewed, molded alternative right now. Technically speaking, the Lennon has contemporary flair. But we can’t help but see grade-school chair vibes, just way cuter. The ergonomic plastic seat is easy to clean (all it’ll ever need is a quick wipe), and the capped legs keep floor scratching at bay. Plus reviewers confirm that not only do their kids from ages 2 to 9 love it, but fellow parents share that they are comfortable enough to pop a squat when they need to, as well.

Best Value: IKEA Orfjall Chair

Ikea Orfjall Chair Domino
Shop

Material: Steel (seat and frame), polypropylene and polyurethane foam (seat pad), polyester fabric (seat cover) | Dimensions: 33-by-21-by-21 inches | Additional features: Cushioned seat, 360-degree swivel, height adjustable

What we like:

  • Adjustable seat, caster wheels, and swivel ability
  • High-quality density foam in the seat for ample cushioning
  • High back provides good lumbar support

Worth noting:

  • Recommended for ages 6 to 12
  • Nonremovable cover

Why we chose it: Homework just got a little more bearable thanks to this adjustable swivel chair at an affordable price point.

For the serious sitters in your life who can draw for hours, we recommend something that swivels for maximum efficiency. This chair from IKEA offers flexibility with its adjustable height and swiveling seat, not to mention the comfort of the cushioned seat and back. Its simple, airy shape keeps it from feeling too techy and grown-up, and its three colorways (light blue, light pink, and light gray) work in a variety of spaces and color palettes. If you’re concerned about the chair rolling away, know that the casters have a safety mechanism that keeps it in place. It will also automatically release when your kid sits down. Phew!

amazon plush office chair
Armless Office Desk Chair by Emiah, Amazon ($209 was $220)
Shop

Material: Faux leather, rubber, metal | Dimensions: 19.3-by-25.5-by-34.2 inches | Additional features: Adjustable height

What we like:

  • Trendy enough for picky tweens
  • Fast shipping
  • An extra-wide and -deep seat (25.5 inches and 19.3 inches, respectively)

Worth noting:

  • Not suitable for young children; possible tipping

Why we chose it: An adjustable height and roomy seat fit.

Nearly every chair on this list is geared toward kids enrolled in elementary school, so if you’re on the search for a seat that would make a middle- or high schooler happy, we have just the find for you. This armless viral sensation from Amazon delivers 4.8 inches of adjustable height, 120 degrees of tilt, and 360 degrees of swivel. The extra-padded premium leather cushion is comfortable enough to become their main study spot. In fact, it may be so comfortable that they’ll want to take it with them to college.

More Affordable Kids’ Desk Chairs We Love

If you don’t want to spend as much on your child’s chair as you did your own office chair—especially since there’s no saying how long it’ll fit them—don’t sweat. We found a few under-$100 finds that still nail our criteria for the best kids’ desk chair: comfy, cute, and quality.

How We Chose These Products

Design and aesthetics always play an important part in our decision-making. In fact, when we vetted our selections for the best kids’ desk chairs, these two factors were just as important as the practical side of things, like proper back support, durable materials, and easy-to-clean surfaces. Color palettes, budget, and adjustability were also top of mind, balancing affordability and appearance. And our experts, from educators to interior designers, agree: It’s not form over function but instead form and function when it comes to the best workspaces for your child.

Shopping Checklist

Design and Shape

If you’re looking for the best desk chair for your child, you might initially think that you need a mini version of your own. But our experts caution that’s not quite the case. Elements such as armrests, which provide critical elbow support when spending the day typing away at a computer, might actually prevent a child from sitting properly. “A desk chair that does not have armrests allows a child to tuck it all the way in, ensuring good posture and proper back support,” says interior designer Becc Burgmann of Becc Burgmann Interior Design, who also has a background in education. And on the topic of good back support: Make sure the chair has a high, sturdy, and comfortable back for them to lean against.

When it comes to aesthetics, a desk chair should go with a room’s overall design in terms of both style and color scheme, recommends Jessica Welling of Jessica Welling Interiors. “Kids’ chairs come in a lot of fun colors, so I often try to choose something that will stand out but still fit in with the room’s color scheme,” she adds.

Material and Overall Quality

Durability is the way to go when it comes to this category. “I tend to navigate toward strong materials that will withstand some wear and tear and work with the overall design for the space we are creating,” explains Dufresne. Look for materials like wood and powder-coated steel that fit the bill in terms of both longevity and ease of cleaning. And for desk chairs that have upholstered seats, our experts recommend wipeable surfaces like vinyl, faux leather, or performance fabrics designed to stand the wear and tear of art projects and lots of movement.

Ergonomic Design

“Kids don’t generally spend hours on end sitting in one position at their desks,” Wellington points out. “They get up and move around a lot more than adults.” With that in mind, ergonomics is still important. You’ll want to make sure that the depth of the chair is appropriate for your child so that they can sit with their back against the back of the chair and their knees off the edge. That way, they have the appropriate lumbar support they need, and their feet can hang down toward the ground or even reach it, depending on their size and that of the chair. If you’ve found a chair that fits them properly, “sitting well and comfortably will help a kid focus and learn better,” comments Cutler. What’s more, “it’s never too early to start teaching your kids about posture!” he adds.

Adjustability

If there’s anything that all kids do, it’s grow. And so the desire for a desk chair (and clothes and beds and shoes…we could go on!) that grows with them is normal. “A desk that can adjust in height is amazing because it can lead to better posture and ultimately make the desk more useful over a longer period of time,” says Cutler. While that’s certainly the case, not all chairs are adjustable, so make sure you’re checking in every so often that your child is sitting comfortably. If their feet touch the ground and their knees are at less than 90 degrees (like when you’re riding a bike that’s too small and your knees feel like they’re in your neck!), it’s time to size up.

Portability

Despite their mobility, interior designers and educators generally do not recommend using folding chairs as long-term solutions for kids’ desk chairs because of their lack of durability and ergonomic form. Most folding chairs are designed to be lightweight and relatively flat for space-saving purposes, so they’re not exactly designed to accommodate a human body for extended periods of time (comfortably, anyway!). If you’re worried about saving space, “a chair without arms that can be tucked under a desk when not in use isn’t going to take up much space at all,” advises Burgmann, and there are plenty of kids’ desk chairs that have wheels or are lightweight enough to pick up and move.

Ask Domino

Q: Does my child really need an ergonomic chair?

“Children don’t spend as much time at a desk as adults (at least they shouldn’t!), so I don’t think splurging on an ergonomic chair is necessary,” asserts Burgmann. However, she adds, “their desk chairs do need to be set at the right height, be comfortable, have a back for support, and be easy to use.” Kids (and adults, really) should be taking regular breaks, where they stand up from their desk, she points out. It can be helpful to encourage children to do specific tasks like homework at their desk, but then suggest they read curled up on the couch or tummy-down on the floor to stretch their bodies and strengthen other muscles.

Q: In the era of remote schooling, which type of chair is best for long periods of sitting?

Most professionals we spoke with acknowledged that it’s not ideal for children to be sitting in the same spot for extended periods of time, but that’s not always an option if they’re attending school remotely. You’ll want to find something that has good back support, for sure, but also a chair that has a cushioned seat: one with firm padding, says interior designer Shana Francesca, founder of Cincinnati. A seat that’s not hard but firm, she notes, will be more supportive. “Really soft cushions collapse and condense after 15 to 30 minutes of sitting,” she points out, so go for something that has a balance of giving and firmness.

Q: Are swivel chairs safe for children?

Swivel chairs get a bad rap for being unsafe for children, but our experts are on the same page: They are generally fine for most kids, depending on their age. “Younger kids will benefit from more stability of a fixed chair, while older ones who are starting to multitask will benefit from a swivel,” explains Cutler. Instead we recommend avoiding a chair with wheels for young children (“You know it will be used as a toy!” warns Welling) and setting boundaries for older kids. The novelty of a chair that moves will eventually wear off.

The Last Word

If you’re looking for the best desk chair for your child, you’ll want to think about how they’ll be using the seat: Is it a place for short spans of time devoted to crafts and coloring or is it the locus of learning for hours at a time during remote school? Depending on their activities and their age, different features like a cushioned seat, a wipeable surface, or adjustable height might be just what they need. But regardless of what you’re looking for, lumbar support and a touch of personality are key, and these chairs hit all those marks.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One size does not fit all when it comes to couches. Some of us have a barely there living room with space for little more than a love seat. Others have square footage to spare and family members who insist on stretching out on a chaise longue. That’s where modular sofas come in. By mixing and matching the various à la carte pieces—like armless chairs, loungers, ottomans, and corner pieces—you can arrange and rearrange them into various configurations as your space and needs dictate.

“I think that modular sofas are really an opportunity to set the tone, the direction, and the story of your space,” says designer Nate Berkus. “They take up so much real estate that you really should be asking yourself what style you want this enormous investment and percentage of your square footage to be.”

We agree. That’s why, after extensive shopping, we narrowed down the 13 best modular sofas that will allow you to create the semi-custom couch of your furniture dreams.

Our Favorites

Make the center of your living room design this structured yet oh-so-comfortable Mags, which is available in an assortment of configurations no matter the size of your space or preferred lounging position to rewatch New Girl. It also comes in a variety of upholstery options, like wool blends and velvet, but we’re suckers for the flamiber, a soft, textured bouclé. Our chief creative officer, Kate Berry, can attest to its marshmallowy-ness. You can often find her working from her own Mags. (The wide arms make for a great spot to prop a laptop.)

Inside Weather uses FSC-certified kiln-dried solid ash wood and Certi-PUR-US foam, and the cushions and pillows include a 100% recycled down alternative, made from plastic bottles that are spun into a polyester fiber. Ship times can vary if you care to customize, so take note of that when ordering.

Her ’70s-inspired modular Muse sofa, available through Design Within Reach, would add a warm vibe to any living room. The exaggerated, sculptural silhouette feels like art but not in a stuffy “don’t touch” museum way. Instead it is functional art you can kick your feet up on, comfortably sinking into the medium-firm foam cushions. As for upholstery, you get to make the tough choice between a creamy bouclé or lush velvet. (The caramel-colored velvet gets our vote.)

It’s available in all the standard modular sofa pieces, including armless chairs, corner chairs, chaise longues, and ottomans, allowing you to configure them in the best shape for your space. While it’s a sink-right-in sofa, don’t worry about the Jones losing its shape—it won’t thanks to its resilient down fill. Bonus: If you’re lacking a guest bedroom, here’s betting your visitors won’t mind crashing on this couch.

The DTC O.G.: Article Beta Sectional

Why we chose it: We can’t decide what we love more—the always-in-style design or direct-to-consumer reduced price.

Since launching in 2013, Article has changed the game of furniture shopping. By offering big-ticket items (like sofas, bed frames, and dining tables) direct to consumers, it nixes a few steps in the supply chain—and slashes a chunk of the cost, too. Its modular Beta sofa is a longtime favorite, with the option to arrange chaise longues in different configurations. Building a Beta into various shapes virtually is almost as fun as when the real deal arrives on your doorstep.

The Budget Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa

BeanBagSofa
Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($499)
Shop

Why we chose it: Available in three sizes and four cool colors… and the three-seater is under $500? Sign us up.

While the thought of a beanbag sofa might conjure images of dorm rooms past, this grown-up take makes a compelling case for the concept. It comes in four chic hues (from bold blood orange to minimalist ivory) and three sizes (single-, double-, and triple-seater). The legless design is a relaxed variation of the modular sofa, allowing one to stand alone, two two-seaters to bookend a coffee table, or several to cluster together for a lounge statement. While this pick has no reviewer feedback to fall back on, we decided to take a chance on it. That’s because UO offers a one-year furniture warranty and accepts returns within a 30-day window from the delivery date. Plus it’s made in the U.S., if that’s important for your furniture search. Psst: Looking for more under-$500 finds? Right this way.

The Casual Deep-Seater: Sundays Movie Night Modular Sectional

sundays movie night sectional
Movie Night 4-Piece Modular Sectional, Sundays ($5,180)
Shop

Why we chose it: A sink-in sectional that sports deep seats, performance fabric, and removable covers.

Has there ever been a so aptly named sofa? Sundays Movie Night sectional makes us want to plop down with our crew and a tub of popcorn and stay put for hours. Let’s start with the basics: The frame is made from solid wood, and it comes in a regular or condo—smaller width and depth, and cheaper—size. Upholstery is made with performance fabric (re: it’s soft, stain resistant, and moisture repellent), and the covers are fully removable; the cushion covers can be machine washed or dry-cleaned. Some reviewers note that the base is firmer than other similar couches but that it doesn’t retract from their enjoyment of it. Several purchasers note that it’s an ideal family sofa whether you have dogs or kids or both; one shopper even says that “we haven’t left the couch since.” What’s better is the brand offers excellent, reviewer-backed customer service, which includes free in-home delivery and assembly on sofas, and regularly priced items are fully refundable or can be exchanged within 30 days of delivery.

The Corduroy Cutie: IKEA Jättebo Modular Sofa

ikea jattebo sofa
Jättebo Modular Sofa, IKEA ($1,740)
Shop

Why we chose it: A fully modular line that incorporates storage and is covered in a unique and luxe-looking upholstery.

Take it from designer Jeremiah Brent: IKEA can indeed exude quiet luxury. Spotted in an Instagram shot from his in-progress Portugal home, the Jättebo sofa looks like it could have been re-covered in a superfancy fabric. It turns out that the trendy corduroy material is straight from the Swedish retailer, too. The thick textile features an extra-wide wale that’s both cozy-looking and soft to the touch, plus the removable covers can be tossed in the washing machine. While we love the verdant green, there are two additional cover options that make switching up a color scheme down the road much easier. As another bonus, the Jättebo line is fully modular, so you can mix and combine the individual one-seaters with chaises (many of which also include storage) to fit any space.

The Stay-a-While Showstopper: &Tradition Develius Modular Sofa

Tradition
&Tradition Develius B Modular Sofa, Finnish Design Shop ($7,200)
Shop

Width: Varies | Seats: Up to 6 | Returns: 14 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • A sleek style you’ll never tire of
  • Each sofa is made to order in just 6 to 8 weeks
  • Uses wood sourced from sustainable forests

Worth noting:

  • Tight turnaround return policy

Why we chose it: This oh-so-elegant design marries pretty with practical.

You won’t be shocked to learn a Dutch designer created this utter showstopper of a modular couch. You may be shocked to learn it’s equally as comfortable as it is beautiful, though—a unicorn combination in the couch world. With its deep seats and extra-soft-to-the-touch fabric options, you’ll be tempted to stay (and stay) for hours at a time. Get creative combining the modular pieces, fabrics, and refined colors to create the couch of your dreams. Say, a nubby cream bouclé love seat to cozy up on with your honey, or an elongated navy linen couch with a chaise longue to allow for optimal leg-stretching moments.

How We Chose These Products

A modular sofa is a sizable purchase, both physically and monetarily. That’s why we took this shopping assignment seriously. We scoured the modular sofa options of reputable brands with high design but not necessarily high price points. These couches will last you for years to come, even if you move, add members to your family, or tweak your design style. Each of the above couches would be a comfy place to rest through life’s big and little moments.

Our Shopping Checklist

Design

This wouldn’t be Domino if we didn’t prioritize smart, sleek design above all else. We shopped for modular sofas with cool silhouettes, practical pieces, and last-a-lifetime styles that will make you smile every time you pass your living room.

Upholstery

The more upholstery options, the better. Some of us prefer a stain-resistant performance fabric for both the longevity of the couch and wayward wine spills. Others are down for a less kid- or pet-friendly luxe velvet. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Versatility

The more à la carte pieces a modular sofa offers, the better. “A modular sofa offers great flexibility,” says Berkus, since you can arrange (and rearrange) the pieces Tetris style. “If you need an L-shaped sectional, you can make that out of modular pieces, or you can make a chaise with a corner piece and an ottoman. Or you can break it apart and put a beautiful decorative table in between two sections with a lamp on it.” You don’t have to spend the big bucks for all of the available pieces either, just what works for your space and lifestyle. No need for an ottoman? Great. Only need one corner piece? Also great.

Comfort

Comfort is key when buying a modular sofa. If we couldn’t doze off on these couches during a movie night, they didn’t make the cut. If space allows, deep seats are the most comfortable for guests of all heights (and the occasional nap!), and soft-to-the-touch upholstery is a must. Pay attention to the distance from the top of the cushion to the ground, too, especially if you have long legs.

Ask Domino

Q: What truly makes a sofa modular?

Think of a modular sofa like playing with Legos (stick with us here) but your Lego pieces include armless chairs, corner pieces, and chaise longues that snap together (more on that, below) to create various configurations. Each piece is bought à la carte and can stand on its own or be arranged to create various shapes.

Q: What is the difference between a modular and sectional sofa?

“The brass-tacks, fundamental difference between the two is that a modular sofa can be made into a sectional sofa, but a sectional cannot be made into a modular,” says Berkus. Even though a sectional is also broken into multiple pieces, those pieces cannot reconfigure into different shapes like a modular sofa can.

Q: Beyond style and color, how do I choose a modular sofa for my space?

Before clicking “add to cart” on any modular sofa piece, measure where it will reside, then measure again. Use painter’s tape to block out where the pieces could be placed, so you won’t be unpleasantly surprised by how big (or small) they are when they arrive. Also consider any potential obstacles, like slim doorways and how the couch could be viewed from various angles of your living room.

As you’re styling your sofa, Berkus encourages pairing it with pieces from various eras. “I love an Italian ’60s- or ’70s-style modular sofa mixed with classic antiques and Swedish lighting from the ’40s, layered in a way that feels like somebody in that era was decidedly well traveled,” he says. That’s a sure way to up the ante on your modular sofa’s bespoke vibe.

Q: I don’t want to slip between my modular couch pieces while lounging. How do you keep it together?

Rest easy—no one will slip through the cracks. Modular pieces connect with metal “crocodile” clips. Picture a zigzag bracket on one side and a triangle post on the other. The clips should click into place easily, securing your sofa together, and detach just as easily so you can rearrange as desired. To nix any slipping and sliding for the sofa as a whole, place rubber pads beneath the pieces’ legs.

The Last Word

Modular sofas are the “choose your own adventure” of furniture shopping. Consider your square footage, how many people your couch should seat, and whether you like the chaise longue on the left or right. Then mix and match the pieces to your design-minded heart’s desire.

Lighting can make or break a room—accent fixtures set the mood for romantic weeknight dinners, dim ultra-low for Netflix marathons, or make it easy to read in bed. To add a ceiling light or wall sconce, you likely have to hire an electrician. For a table lamp, you need an empty surface such as a nightstand. But a floor lamp? All it requires is a square foot of floor space, which most of us have.

Even better, the style is versatile enough to illuminate any nook or cranny: where you read, where you work, and even a dark hallway. But the well-made lookers can be pricey, and it takes time and energy to sift through the category to find the hidden gems. We took the plunge and came up with task masters, fabric shades of all sorts, natural materials, and modern takes aplenty—all under $500. Read on for our top picks of each type.

Task Floor Lamps

From a reader-favorite dimmable pharmacy style to a 61% off arc option and other marked-down pieces, these are proof that budget floor lamps don’t have to be cookie-cutter.

Traditional Floor Lamps

Give a corner a classy look with one of these traditional styles—there are brass finishes, fabric shades, and swing arms. We’re particularly fond of the Thomas O’Brien–designed Beckham model from Visual Comfort, but Brightech’s arched number, spotted in RHONY Star Brynn Whitfield’s Manhattan apartment, is a worthy runner-up for looking more expensive than it actually is.

Wicker and Raffia Floor Lamps

Wicker and raffia both lend texture and materiality to a space, whether that’s in a piece of furniture or, as is the case here, a lampshade or base.

Modern Floor Lamps

Whether you’re going all in on the squiggly trend or adding a superpop of color to a bedroom corner, modern floor lamps offer everything from streamline silhouettes to quirky touches.

Getting in the checkout line at Target with one too many not-on-your-list items is a rite of passage. Straying from your checkboxes while meandering the retailer’s aisles (or clicking through all of its online options) is easy because, well, you can buy pretty much anything—including exclusive home decor collaborations with the likes of Studio McGee, one of our favorite kids’ nightlights, and even KitchenAid mixers. We keep an eye out for freshly stocked products and stuff we thought we’d never find in a big-box store—all to help you wade through it without click after click. Below, shop our short list, organized by type, of the best things to buy at Target.

Our Top Target Shopping Tips

Shopping Target online versus in person is a totally different ball game. Not only is it more difficult to discern the quality of a piece through your computer screen, but the retailer also stocks its virtual shelves with an overwhelming amount of third-party vendors. To cut through the clutter of outsourced duds that are not sold or shipped directly by Target, there are a few easy steps you can take.

Know Your Keywords

Navigating the Target categories’ drop-down can be a dizzying task, as there are a number of subcategory holes you can find yourself sucked into. To stay on task, we recommend entering your keyword (e.g., “rattan chair”) in the search bar at the top of the home page to kick-start your shopping journey. This will help maximize your results while also allowing you to focus on what it is you came for (and steering clear of what you didn’t).

Don’t Forget to Filter and Sort

Once you’ve popped your keyword into the search bar, you’re going to find yourself in a sea of product results (we’re talking pages upon pages, and they’re not the easiest to jump between). Here is where filtering comes into play: Our shopping director recommends selecting “Target brand” from the brands filter at the top of the page to narrow it down to sold-by-Target stock only. Next, you can sort the page results by pricing, newness, average rating, and best-seller status.

Read the Reviews

Since you won’t be able to touch the goods before bagging them, reviews are your best bet for sussing out the actual quality of a product. Target customers are known for their loyalty to the retailer and, therefore, you can count on honesty when it comes to their feedback. If a product has a plethora of reviews with rankings of 4 stars and above, then it’s safe to consider that it’s a bona fide best thing to buy.

Explore the Exclusive Collections

If you do choose to go the “Explore All Home” category route—maybe you just want to window-shop—then a hot tip from our editors is to explore the exclusive collections. About halfway down the page, past the subcategories and new arrivals, you’ll find a section that reads “Style your space with our exclusive collections.” This section is your friend. Some of our favorite retailer-exclusive brands (such as Opalhouse with Jungalow and Threshold with Studio McGee) are plugged here. It’s also a space where new and noteworthy collection launches are spotlighted (like newest arrivals from Hearth & Hand with Magnolia).

Our Target Short List

Furniture

Furniture is the bread and butter of Target’s high-profile design collaborations. Whether it’s Justina Blakeney’s jubilantly colorful collection for Opalhouse or the soothing neutrals of Studio McGee’s Threshold line, current offerings range from the upholstered to solid wood. We’ll be picking up the fringed Alberhill accent chair, thank you very much. Other lines worth perusing: Room Essentials’s artist spotlight series; first-apartment-friendly Project 62; and cheerful, not-just-for-kids Pillowfort.

Outdoor Furniture

It’s all about the reviews where Target’s outdoor furniture is concerned, and we found two 5-star-rated sets: Both the French bistro–inspired and faux rattan Mulberry trio would make for a supremely relaxed setting. If you’re in the market for a lodge look, however, we suggest Project 62 Adirondack chairs (a Domino-reader favorite). The best-selling seats are made from durable Polywood—a proprietary polyethylene lumber and mix of salvaged landfill- and ocean-bound plastics.

Decor

Throw pillows, while a wonderful design addition, always seem to be just a little expensive. Thankfully, Target’s Studio McGee line has many that are $30 and under. (We particularly like the in-house brand’s block-printed versions, which, unfortunately, tend to sell out.) Display all your trinkets on a coffee table in a woven tray or stash them away in a basket. For the latter we recommend handmade offerings from Mo’s Crib, a Black-owned brand recently made available at the mass retailer. Then add a ceramic vase—we vote one tall enough to house big branches—for the finishing touch.

But don’t forget your walls: Project 62 has a wide selection of highly rated frames on offer. And we think Target is a smart source for stylish floor mirrors that don’t feel over the top. You can even find decor that reads more handmade than hokey, but it’s all about the materials (like the rattan used in this tray).

Bedding

One hundred percent French linen bedding for around $200? Sign us up. We are particularly drawn to Bosker Home’s cozy canyon heather colorway—dare we say the charcoal pinstripe is a dupe for even fancier labels? You can get mattresses and pillows from top-loved brands, too. Think: Beckham Hotel pillows, which number among our favorites for side sleepers

Tabletop

We said it before and we’ll say it again: Keep an eye on material. When it comes to shopping tabletop at Target, the real hidden gems can be found in durable stoneware, outdoor-appropriate melamine or acrylic, and even on-trend stainless steel.

Lighting

Lighting is another category Target’s design collaborations do particularly well. Although the floor lamps don’t have us screeching our carts to a halt, we’re really here to talk table and task—oh, and don’t forget the ceiling. The retailer’s in-house offerings are on trend and look far more expensive than what you’re actually coughing up.

Kitchen

Classic brands like KitchenAid and Caraway mingle with newcomers in Target’s kitchen section, which has an expansive offering of cookware, countertop appliances, and utensils. The surprisingly large mix of quality, extensively reviewed kitchen knives is a boon, too.

Organization

Take a deep dive into Target’s organization products and you might get a little dizzy. (We’ve done it, and, trust us, you’ll need to come up for air multiple times.) There are all kinds of in-drawer options—in-house brand Brightroom offers many, and for multi-room use—as well as toy and office storage you’ll be cool with leaving out. Lazy Susans make kitchen cabinet storage that much more put-together, and we really like this 5-star-rated one.

Wellness

We’d say any Target shopper is familiar with Method home and cleaning products, but did you know its Vetiver + Amber scent will make your hands smell like they’ve been washed with Le Labo? Plus well-reviewed air purifiers and humidifiers from editor-favorite brands like Dyson and Levoit, even an Opalhouse-designed essential oil diffuser, are all available with quick delivery or next-day pickup.

Planters and Vases

Planters and vases are something of a specialty at Target, but filtering by material, brand, and size will help you narrow down your search. Here’s what we’re liking from the shelves right now: a $3 indoor-outdoor planter that comes in eight colors and six sizes; a Jungalow-designed brassy beauty; and a squat, opaque mauve vase from Studio McGee. (Oh, by the way, Target’s faux plant selection is A+.)

Kids

Target’s kids’ section is brimming with whimsical (and, in our opinion, highly giftable) goodies—namely any of the offerings from in-house brand Pillowfort. Our trustworthy favorites worth coming back for are affordably priced and aesthetically pleasing soft goods (bespoke-quality bedding and plushies) and organizing solutions (colorful storage bins and woven baskets), plus decor accents (charming nightlights galore) and one of the best kids’ desks.

Pets

Similar to the kids’ category, Target’s pet offerings strike the perfect balance between affordable and design forward. Whether you’re in need of a bed your pup will actually want to sleep on or a chew toy you won’t mind leaving out, the retailer carries a bounty of options from cult-favorite in-house labels and popular name brands (like Wild One) that our very own pet-parent editors own and love.

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

It goes without saying: An unsecured pool can present risks, particularly for families. With that in mind, pairing one of the best pool alarms with a fence that encloses your swim spot is a no-brainer in most cases. But before you start shopping, it’s good to know that there are two different types out there. Some focus on the pool entryway, sounding a loud warning if the gate is opened. Others monitor the water itself, using an infrared eye to scan for disturbances, such as splash from someone falling in or objects below the surface. If you own a pool and are looking to add an alarm (note: some states even require private pools to have them), read on for our picks.

Our Favorites

Best Overall: Poolguard In-Ground Pool Alarm

poolguard
Poolguard PGRM-2 In-Ground Pool Alarm, Amazon ($205 was $218)
Shop

Type: Pool entry | Adjustable sensitivity controls: Yes | Alarm: Indoor | Max pool size: 800 square feet

What we like:

  • Sleek design
  • Alarm sounds indoors via receiver
  • Loud 85-decibel alarm

Worth noting:

  • Pricey

Why we chose it: The Poolguard is easy to use, not an eyesore, and sounds an alarm inside your home via a remote receiver.

This Poolguard pool alarm sits perched at the side of your pool, keeping a close eye on the surface of the water. If someone (or something) falls in, the infrared eye detects the splash and triggers an 85-decibel warning—about the sound level of a blender—on a separate receiver that sits inside your home. This compact alarm covers a range of 800 square feet of surface area and can communicate with the monitor from as far as 200 feet away. It’s also supereasy to use: Once you place it in the water, it automatically wakes up and begins monitoring the pool surface. To turn it off, simply remove it from the water and put the unit in sleep mode.

Best Value: Hendun Pool Gate Alarm

hendun
Hendun Pool Gate Alarm, Amazon ($36 was $49)
Shop

Type: Gate | Adjustable sensitivity controls: N/A | Alarm: Outdoor | Max pool size: N/A

What we like:

  • Extremely loud
  • Remote control and keypad
  • Affordably priced

Worth noting:

  • Only works with a solid pool fence

Why we chose it: It can be operated remotely and is extremely loud (a good thing!).

If you have a sturdy pool fence that’s at least 4 feet high, then a solid gate alarm, such as this one from Hendon, might be all you need. It functions similarly to a door sensor on a home security system. Opening the gate triggers a quite deafening 140-decibel alarm that the entire neighborhood should have little problem hearing. The alarm is waterproof, and you can conveniently arm and disarm it with a remote control or via its keypad. The gate is powered by four AAA batteries and will chirp like a smoke detector when the batteries are low.  Buy in a pack of two, if you’d like, to install one on your pool gate and on an exterior fence that surrounds your backyard.

Best for Above-Ground Pools: PoolEye Above Ground Pool Alarm

pooleye
PoolEye Above Ground Pool Alarm, Amazon ($69 was $200)
Shop

Type: Pool entry | Adjustable sensitivity controls: No | Alarm: Outdoor | Max pool size: 24 feet in diameter

What we like:

  • Monitors underwater movement
  • Detects objects as light as 15 pounds
  • Sits out of the way

Worth noting:

  • Only sounds a poolside alarm

Why we chose it: A low profile and very accurate underwater sensor will set you right up.

Above-ground pools don’t afford a lot of space for housing accessories like an alarm, which is why the PoolEye is such a great option. It mounts under a pool’s top ledge or railing, keeping it safely out of the way of all the action. When armed, it scans for underwater activity via a sensor that extends below the water’s surface. If it detects movement, it triggers an alarm that sounds at 85 decibels. The PoolEye’s sensor is sensitive enough to detect objects as light as 15 pounds and, since it sits below the water rather than above it, you won’t have false alerts from wind or rain.

Best Smart: Lifebuoy BCone Pool Safety Alarm System

Simply the Best photo
Lifebuoy BCone Pool Safety Alarm System, Amazon ($445 was $495)
Shop

Type: Pool entry | Adjustable sensitivity controls: Yes | Alarm: Indoor and outdoor | Max pool size: 20 feet by 40 feet

What we like:

  • Indoor and outdoor alarms
  • Can be controlled via app
  • Automatically resets

Worth noting:

  • Will cost you
  • Floats in your pool

Why we chose it: This one auto-arms, and it’s the only system we found that sounds both inside a home and poolside.

Yes, it’s a very noticeable fire-engine red, floats around in your pool, and also happens to be one of the most expensive pool alarms you can buy. But if you’re looking for an alarm system that will provide the most comprehensive protection, this is it. Similar to others, the Lifebuoy uses a motion sensor that can detect disturbances in the water. What sets it apart are two alarms that sit poolside and inside the home, ensuring someone will hear it if it’s triggered. You can control all of its settings and arm and disarm it via a smartphone, and it’s got you covered if you forget to set it. If the Lifebuoy detects no movement in the pool for several minutes, it automatically rearms.

Best for Sliding Glass Doors: Techko Safe Pool Alarm

techko
Techko Safe Pool Alarm, Amazon ($49)
Shop

Type: Gate | Adjustable sensitivity controls: N/A | Alarm: Indoor  | Max pool size: N/A

What we like:

  • Sensors for glass and screen doors
  • Easy-to-use bypass button
  • Low battery indicator

Worth noting:

  • Uses visible wires

Why we chose it: A bypass button allows adults to come and go freely while alerting you when little ones try to squeeze by.

As an entryway from house to pool, sliding glass doors can be a challenge to monitor. With so many people passing in and out, it’s easy for young children to slip through. This smartly designed pool alarm uses a bypass system as a virtual bouncer, allowing certain individuals to skirt the alarm while keeping others out. If the sliding glass door is opened without first pressing the bypass button (mounted at adult height), it triggers a 120-decibel, 6-tone alarm, alerting you and, likely, all of your neighbors. It smartly comes with two sensors—one for a glass slider and one for a screen door—allowing you to keep the former open on cooler days while still maintaining a secure pool area.

Best Camera: SwamCam Pool Alarm Camera

swamcam
SwamCam Swimming Pool Alarm, Amazon ($499)
Shop

Type: Camera | Adjustable sensitivity controls: N/A | Alarm: Indoor | Max pool size: N/A

What we like:

  • Can monitor the pool via a camera
  • Automatically sets itself
  • Receive notifications through push alerts

Worth noting:

  • Most expensive of the bunch

Why we chose it: Get alerts on your smartphone with live video.

Unlike other pool alarms that use an infrared sensor to monitor pool activity, SwamCam uses a camera with AI tech to detect movement. When activated and it spies someone in the pool area, a loud alarm sounds and the app alerts you via push notifications, instantly connecting you to the camera so you can see what’s happening poolside. You can even use the camera’s two-way microphone to speak to whomever is in the pool area. And if you’re someone who frequently forgets to set alarms, you can program the SwamCam to automatically set itself so you don’t have to remember to manually arm it.

How We Chose These Products

A pool alarm is all about keeping children and pets safe by providing an additional layer of security beyond that 4-foot gated fence you should (already) have surrounding your pool. First and foremost, an alarm must be able to detect a human or pet that falls into the pool water and alert you with a loud enough sound to hear indoors. Keeping those factors in mind, we chose options that are sensitive enough to register movement in the pool water and booming enough to make neighbors from several houses away pause and take notice. It should also be easy to set up, requiring you to do very little beyond placing it in the pool. We also liked useful design features in pool alarms, including those that are able to automatically set themselves if you happen to forget to do so and models that can send you push notifications on a smart device.

Types of Alarms

Pool alarms fall into two categories, those that you plop in the water to monitor the pool itself and alarms that sound when someone opens the pool’s gate. The former is designed to alert you as soon as someone enters the water. They come equipped with an electric infrared eye that sounds an alarm when it senses disturbances. Some pool alarms scan the surface for splashes, while others have sensors that extend into the water and scan for movement underneath. Gate alarms work like a standard security system. They include door sensors that, while armed, sound an alarm if the gate leading to the pool area is opened. For more thorough security, you can use a gate alarm in combination with a pool entry alarm.

Volume

A pool alarm is only useful if other members of the household hear it when it goes off. If the alarm uses a receiver that’s located indoors, then 80 decibels should be loud enough to alert anyone inside the home. If the alarm receiver is poolside, you’ll want a louder one to ensure you’ll hear it even if you’re indoors.

Pool Size

If you’re purchasing a pool alarm, it’s crucial that you pay attention to the size limitations of the device. Most can cover a maximum 400 square feet of pool surface. If you have a larger pool, you may need to purchase multiple alarms.

Installation and Maintenance

Installing a pool alarm is not complicated and something most pool owners can complete in less than an hour. That said, it’s crucial to follow the installation instructions carefully to make sure it works properly.

Maintaining a pool alarm is similar to maintaining a smoke detector in your home. Pool alarms are powered by batteries, so you’ll need to change them about once a year. Luckily, most pool alarms will chirp or display a light when the batteries in the unit are low.

Q: How loud is a pool alarm?

How loud a pool alarm is depends on the type. Most pool alarms with receivers that sound indoors are between 80 and 85 decibels. Pool alarms that sound their alarm poolside are typically louder at between 120 and 130 decibels.

Q: Do pool alarms work with pool covers?

If you need a pool alarm that works with a cover, purchase an alarm equipped with a sensor that extends below the surface and scans for motion underwater.

Q: Is it a law that you have to have a pool alarm?

While there are some municipalities that require private pool owners to have a pool alarm, this isn’t common. Check with local ordinances to determine what the requirements are for pool safety equipment.

The Last Word

The Pool Guard, with its indoor receiver and underwater sensor, is a reliable and reasonably priced pool alarm for in-ground pools. Those with above-ground pools should consider the PoolEye above-ground pool alarm, which is designed to attach to the ledge of above-ground pool walls and monitor underwater movement. Remember: Safety first, people!
