This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One of the perks of working at Domino is the fact that we look at homes, beautifully individual and dynamic, all day long. And with said perk, we spot commonalities along the way. There are a handful of trademark trends we have grown to expect every season: pastels for spring, vibrant hues for summer, and cozy textures for fall. Then there are those that skew toward the less expected and timeless. Case in point: the best red couches.

A departure from the standard white, beige, or taupe-y seat, this fresh alternative immediately brings a bold dose of color and character to any space. We’ve spotted the primary hue in every shade—from blush and tomato to rust and even rich maroon. And the look is surprisingly more versatile than you may think and can be seamlessly integrated within a wide variety of aesthetics. Below, a closer look at a few of our favorite spaces featuring this particular hue, and how creatives and designers tapped it as the centerpiece of their living quarters or let it blend in with the rest of their decor. Then we share a few shoppable look-alikes (especially if the original was bespoke), to boot.

Armless Red Sofas

In Slash Objects founder Arielle Assouline-Lichten’s Brooklyn studio, this Ligne Roset sofa is an attention-grabbing conversation starter thanks to its bright velvet upholstery. Thankfully it’s also small-space–friendly, making it an appealing pick for apartment dwellers (even if Assouline-Lichten’s lofted space is quite large). The armless, futon-esque frame allows for the creative’s other vintage finds to shine. Our picks, below, also deliver a love seat-like vibe.

Square-Arm Red Sofas

With retro wood paneling as the backdrop, this Reath Design custom sofa covered in a deep red-toned velvet by Kravet makes a straightforward, square-arm design instantly more interesting in Brynn Jones’s home. You can do the same with our favorite sofa brands—Floyd, Lulu and Georgia, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and more all offer a range of reds to dress up their simple frames.

Curved Red Sofas

We’ll never tire of a velvet sofa, especially one that comes in just the right shade of saturated crimson or a softer red-tinted blush. Add to the material a curvy frame that looks and feels like a hug and we’ve pretty much summed up Anthropologie’s Vera sofa, the very one that can be found in Lathan Thomas’s joyful Brooklyn home. As one reviewer so aptly summarizes, “It’s beautiful from every angle.” We tried to channel that feeling into our finds, below.

Statement Red Sofas

Leave it to a former Prada architect to get experimental with living room design. We still think about the custom-made raspberry sofa—with the perfect fringe detail—that Roberto Baciocchi designed himself. The original proves that, sometimes, color is just the start of a standout piece. If you’re seeking a look as unique as Baciocchi’s Tuscany guesthouse, double down on the bold factor by pairing the shade with a funky silhouette, channel-tufting details, or a pattern.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

If you grew up in the early aughts, you likely have vivid memories of hanging out on a cartoon-covered blob. We’re happy to report that the best couches for kids nowadays are no longer limited to those garishly hued numbers. In fact, today’s kid-friendly furniture could easily be mistaken for miniature love seats, and they’re durable, too. While we know of a few designer hacks to make adult-size furniture childproof (hello, FiberSeal), isn’t there something special about providing a designated spot for toddlers and tweens, whether for snacking, reading, or keying up a good old-fashioned puppet show? Besides, while our list of the best couches for kids varies greatly in shape (we’re talking beanbag sofas and modular foam that looks more like building blocks), none should cramp your interior style.

Our Favorites

Best for Playtime: Brentwood Home Play Couch

Sofas photo
Play Couch, Brentwood Home ($315, was $349)
Shop

Material: Recycled polyester and nylon | Dimensions: Varies | Fill: High-density foam

What we like:

  • 30-day risk-free trial
  • Greenguard Gold certified
  • 6 colorful covers that are removable and machine washable
  • Made with vegetable-derived foam and petroleum-free fabrics

Worth noting:

  • On the pricier side

Why we chose it: A modular sofa with configurations limited only by your child’s imagination.

While Jill Singer of Sight Unseen enlisted the help of Keren and Thomas Richter of White Arrow to custom-make child-size foam building blocks (think: oversize rectangles, triangles, and cylinders) to outfit her family’s Hamptons basement, you can enjoy a similar setup right off the shelf with Brentwood Home’s Play Couch. Offering two more pieces than the cult-favorite Nugget, this set of six can come together in the shape of a classic couch, with back cushions and sheltered arms, or be configured into pretty much anything your child puts their mind to, though reviewers most often revere its seemingly endless fort possibilities.

Best for Movie Nights: West Elm Kids Flip Floor Sleeper

Sofas photo
Flip Floor Sleeper, West Elm ($550 and up)
Shop

Material: Varies | Dimensions: 71-by-33-by-21.5 inches | Fill: Polyurethane foam

What we like:

  • Adjustable to lay flat or sit upright
  • Long enough to sit 3

Worth noting:

  • Heavy—60 pounds, to be exact
  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: The slouchy silhouette of a beanbaglike floor pillow embodies that notion of cool and comfortable that will transition with your child.

Keep a floor sofa in the kids-only zone (like designer Hollie Velten-Lattrell did) as a crash pad for Disney marathons. While Velten-Lattrell’s original buy from Urban Outfitters is no longer available, this West Elm alternative is a pretty close second. Plan to plop it in front of a TV or projector screen for Saturday-morning cartoons or weekend movie nights (and if buttery popcorn happens to be the snack of choice, you can choose from a swath of performance fabrics, including distressed velvet, tweed, and washed canvas).

Best for a Reading Nook: Crate & Kids Rattan Kids Twin Daybed

Sofas photo
Rattan Kids Twin Daybed, Crate&Barrel ($1,000)
Shop

Material: Rattan | Dimensions: 85-by-42-by-36 inches | Fill: N/A

What we like:

  • Solid wood slats
  • Adjustable iron legs (helpful if you have sloped floors!)
  • Endless design possibilities, just add sheets and pillows

Worth noting:

  • You’ll need to supply the mattress
  • Biggest option on the list

Why we chose it: It’ll fit a twin mattress or two couch cushions, so it’s easy to switch up the color or pattern of whatever sheets or duvet cover you swaddle it with.

Technically this is a daybed, but if you place enough pillows (to do double duty as back- and armrests), it’s worthy of our list of the best couches for kids. Keep a fully stacked library within reach and it’ll become an irresistible spot to snuggle up with their latest Scholastic find. And no harm is done if they doze off (it just so happens to be Heather Taylor’s children’s sleeping spot in their Laurel Canyon home). Plus the sturdy iron-base frame and legs won’t buckle if your child doesn’t exactly happen to have the best track record with the “no jumping on the bed” rule.

Best for Game Rooms: Urban Outfitters Roma Sofa

green and wavy wood sofa
Roma Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($1,299)
Shop

Material: Polyester, rubberwood, and plywood | Dimensions: 74.8-by-33.5-by-30 inches | Fill: Rayon foam

What we like:

  • Trendy, wavy cut frame that feels whimsical and modern
  • Tall leg height (nearly 7 inches) to easily slide and store stacks of board games under

Worth noting:

  • Spot-clean only

Why we chose it: An unexpected design that can hold its own in the same space as a table tennis tournament.

We may have only caught a glimpse of the Roma Sofa hanging out in the ultra-cool game room of a recent Studio DB–designed New Jersey beach house, but we can’t unsee it as a perfect hangout spot. The playful wavy wood frame adds a touch of whimsy, but the full two-seater offers deep, 26-inch cushions roomy enough for siblings, friends, and visitors alike. It’s an unexpected, kid-friendly find, but likely ideal for an older crowd.

Best for Sleepovers: Made Haru Sofa

Sofas photo
Haru Sofa, Made ($383)
Shop

Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16-by-47-by-20 inches | Fill: Polyethylene

What we like:

  • Mid-century angled wood legs
  • Transitions from love seat to sofa bed
  • The choice between velvet and canvas

Worth noting:

  • Long lead times (ships from the U.K.)
  • Professional cleaning only

Why we chose it: This compact cutie unfolds from lounger to sofa bed in seconds.

This sofa might just be impossible to grow out of, as it’s a small space saver that’ll earn the approval of guests of any age. We first spotted the model in this attic–turned–kids’ room on England’s Kent coast, where it’s an essential part of the seat setup. Its first form is incredibly compact, taking up barely any square footage thanks to a 20-inch depth that’s still long enough to fit two kids, before extending out a full 71 inches, aka longer than a twin. Though we’d keep the back part up for a quasi-tufted headboard.

Best for All Ages: Article Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat

boucle love seat
Gabriola Ivory Bouclé Love Seat, Article ($699)
Shop

Material: Bouclé, solid wood | Dimensions: 31-by-64-by-34 inches | Fill: Foam

What we like:

  • Solid wood frame (sturdy!)
  • Removable covers and legs
  • Covered in a low-absorption bouclé

Worth noting:

  • On the firmer side, rather than superplushy

Why we chose it: For a style that’ll grow with your kiddos (and that you can enjoy right along with them).

You don’t have to be 10 or younger to enjoy Article’s Gabriola love seat, and that’s exactly why it’s now one of our favorite kid couches. This is the kind of child-friendly sofa that has staying power—it’s large enough for parents or babysitters to enjoy throughout the younger years, and the compact silhouette is suitable for small spaces and little legs. It’s one of the very first pieces of furniture you’ll see when entering designer Erin Fetherston’s L.A. home; her front door opens up next to her kids’ playroom. Fetherston removed the slatted legs, which gives the Gabriola a superlow profile and makes it even easier for her three children to climb up and down from. (A smart tip: The legs can always go back on when the gang is older.)

On Our Radar

P’Kolino Litte Reader Sofa

Little Reader chair in red
P’Kolino Little Reader Sofa, Maisonette ($170)
Shop

This sofa would be the perfect addition to any reading nook, and we’re not just saying that because the side arms feature a built-in pocket to keep your kiddo’s favorite books within close reach. The cushy foam base is wrapped up in stain-resistant fabrics and offers an angular silhouette perfect for sitting up on. And bonus: The middle can fold out into a sleeper for impromptu naps or playtime.

Pottery Barn Teen x West Elm Carmen Sofa

Sofas photo
Carmen Sofa, West Elm ($599)
Shop

This floor sofa can be wrapped up in either a velvety performance fabric, nubby bouclé, or neutral twill that will easily transition from the toddler to tween years.

Gray Malin x Cloth Company Settee

Sofas photo
Settee, Gray Malin x Cloth Company ($1,350)
Shop

For a touch of whimsy and heirloom-level quality—we’re talking 100% cotton upholstery and solid wood legs—Maisonette’s made-to-order settee offers a storybook-like illustration pattern that feels fantastical but not too childish. Seriously, we can see your kids passing this one down to their children (and so on and so forth).

Milliard Modular Kids Sofa

Sofas photo
Modular Kids Sofa, Milliard ($160)
Shop

At a quick glance, you’d never guess this small sofa could be dismantled into a bed, lightweight poufs, ottomans, and even a puppet theater. Other review-backed perks: The velour cover is removable and machine washable, and the whole thing arrives in one vacuum-sealed package. Did we mention it’s less than $200?

Our Shopping Checklist

Size

As they’re designed with little humans in mind, the best couches for kids are compact and low-profile, even sitting directly on the ground. Smaller dimensions make it easier for toddlers to crawl on and off safely, especially since playtime inevitably dissolves into roughhousing.

Easy-to-Clean Materials

Spills and stains are bound to happen anytime kids are involved, which is why designers often pick out tight-patterned, textured, or dark fabrics for sofas, as they’re better at hiding the marks that refuse to come out after you’ve tried blotting them up with soap, water, and vinegar without success. Psst: Leather and velvet are actually more durable than parents think, and the real deal will develop a lovely patina over time.

Durability

As we’ve confirmed: Kids are messy. They somehow always seem to have their hands in something, and no matter if you watched them diligently wash their hands, their fingers are still sticky from that peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich at lunch. That’s why we recommend going with performance fabrics. In fact, sofas aside, many designers will opt for tough textiles when upholstering a window-seat cushion or banquette (for example, Kate Hayes of Little Hayes Studio chose an indoor-outdoor–approved fabric from Schumacher for a preteen room). They’re less likely to get threadbare or tear. High-density foam filling is also important to note, as regular foam will more easily misshape with age (though if you don’t plan to keep them for longer than your kid outgrows them, this isn’t a detail to get too hung up on).

The Last Word

The best couches for kids are designed to be the go-to seat for your children from the toddler to tween years. This is the place they’ll (hopefully) go to read, eat a snack, or (let’s face it) binge-watch Peppa Pig on their tablet, so it needs to be as comfy as it is durable.

A solid wood frame paired with feather-filled deep cushions makes for a cozy arrangement, one that’s particularly tough to pass up when the price tag is slashed to under $1,000. And touting a 76-inch length means it can easily fit into an average-size living room and small spaces alike without looking awkward or bulky. “Worth every penny,” according to one reviewer. Another benefit aside from the limited-time 7% off promotion includes the removable, washable covers for easy upkeep.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

One size does not fit all when it comes to couches. Some of us have a barely there living room with space for little more than a love seat. Others have square footage to spare and family members who insist on stretching out on a chaise longue. That’s where modular sofas come in. By mixing and matching the various à la carte pieces—like armless chairs, loungers, ottomans, and corner pieces—you can arrange and rearrange them into various configurations as your space and needs dictate.

“I think that modular sofas are really an opportunity to set the tone, the direction, and the story of your space,” says designer Nate Berkus. “They take up so much real estate that you really should be asking yourself what style you want this enormous investment and percentage of your square footage to be.”

We agree. That’s why, after extensive shopping, we narrowed down the 13 best modular sofas that will allow you to create the semi-custom couch of your furniture dreams.

Our Favorites

The Bouclé Backdrop: Hay Mags Sofa

Modular-Sofa-Hay
Mags Soft Low Sofa, Hay ($3,756 was $4,695)
Shop

Width: Up to 121.75 inches | Seats: 3 | Returns: Within 30 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • Made of particularly soft flamiber fabric
  • Extra-deep seats make it a prime napping couch

Worth noting:

  • The low height may be too low for some with mobility issues
  • Assembly required

Why we chose it: The nubby fabric has made a comeback in recent years, and we’re all about it—especially on this plush seater.

Bouclé is back, and what better way to show it off than in modular sofa form? Make the center of your living room design this structured yet oh-so-comfortable Mags, which is available in an assortment of configurations no matter the size of your space or preferred lounging position to rewatch New Girl. It also comes in a variety of upholstery options, like wool blends and velvet, but we’re suckers for the flamiber, a soft, textured bouclé. Our chief creative officer, Kate Berry, can attest to its marshmallowy-ness. You can often find her working from her own Mags. (The wide arms make for a great spot to prop a laptop.)

The Kid- and Pet-Friendly Corner Unit: Inside Weather Bondi Sectional

Sofas photo
Bondi 5-Seat Modular Sectional, Inside Weather ($5,275)
Shop

Width: Up to 216 inches, corner to corner | Seats: 6 or more | Returns: 365-day home trial | Upholstery: Numerous to choose from, including performance fabrics

What we like:

  • Made in the U.S.
  • Wide selection of upholstery, specific to needs
  • Customizable frame and cushions

Worth noting:

  • Assembly required, but tools included
  • Cushions aren’t attached, can shift

Why we chose it: This chic sectional gets the thumbs-up from adults and kiddos alike.

Sticky peanut butter fingers are no match for this super-customizable modular sofa from Inside Weather. After you’ve picked out the size you want (in units of 36 inches), it’s time to turn to upholstery. With loads of options to choose from, you have your pick of everything from performance and pet-friendly to machine washable and PFAS-free, Oeko-Tex–certified fabric. Then choose from three frame finishes and two cushion styles, of which short GIFs on the site show the difference. With a tapered back and clean lines, it’s a fit for all areas of the house—name a room, any room. The materials, you ask? Inside Weather uses FSC-certified kiln-dried solid ash wood and Certi-PUR-US foam, and the cushions and pillows include a 100% recycled down alternative, made from plastic bottles that are spun into a polyester fiber. Ship times can vary if you care to customize, so take note of that when ordering.

  • The exaggerated lines make it a true showstopper
  • Either fabric option is a winner
  • Arrives fully assembled

Worth noting:

  • There’s no time to waste (3 days!) if you’re considering a return

Why we chose it: With sculptural lines and sumptuous upholstery, this sofa is a piece of awe-inspiring craftsmanship.

If you’ve been jonesing to add Australian designer Sarah Ellison’s relaxed retro aesthetic to your home, consider this your sign. Her ’70s-inspired modular Muse sofa, available through Design Within Reach, would add a warm vibe to any living room. The exaggerated, sculptural silhouette feels like art but not in a stuffy “don’t touch” museum way. Instead it is functional art you can kick your feet up on, comfortably sinking into the medium-firm foam cushions. As for upholstery, you get to make the tough choice between a creamy bouclé or lush velvet. (The caramel-colored velvet gets our vote.)

Since launching in 2013, Article has changed the game of furniture shopping. By offering big-ticket items (like sofas, bed frames, and dining tables) direct to consumers, it nixes a few steps in the supply chain—and slashes a chunk of the cost, too. The Budget Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa

Why we chose it: Available in three sizes and four cool colors… and the three-seater is under $500? Sign us up.

While the thought of a beanbag sofa might conjure images of dorm rooms past, this grown-up take makes a compelling case for the concept. It comes in four chic hues (from bold blood orange to minimalist ivory) and three sizes (single-, double-, and triple-seater). The legless design is a relaxed variation of the modular sofa, allowing one to stand alone, two two-seaters to bookend a coffee table, or several to cluster together for a lounge statement. While this pick has no reviewer feedback to fall back on, we decided to take a chance on it. That’s because UO offers a one-year furniture warranty and accepts returns within a 30-day window from the delivery date. Plus it’s made in the U.S., if that’s important for your furniture search. Psst: Looking for more under-$500 finds? Right this way.

Shop

Why we chose it: A sink-in sectional that sports deep seats, performance fabric, and removable covers.

Has there ever been a so aptly named sofa? Sundays Movie Night sectional makes us want to plop down with our crew and a tub of popcorn and stay put for hours. Let’s start with the basics: The frame is made from solid wood, and it comes in a regular or condo—smaller width and depth, and cheaper—size. Upholstery is made with performance fabric (re: it’s soft, stain resistant, and moisture repellent), and the covers are fully removable; the cushion covers can be machine washed or dry-cleaned. Some reviewers note that the base is firmer than other similar couches but that it doesn’t retract from their enjoyment of it. Several purchasers note that it’s an ideal family sofa whether you have dogs or kids or both; one shopper even says that “we haven’t left the couch since.” What’s better is the brand offers excellent, reviewer-backed customer service, which includes free in-home delivery and assembly on sofas, and regularly priced items are fully refundable or can be exchanged within 30 days of delivery.

The Corduroy Cutie: IKEA Jättebo Modular Sofa

Jättebo Modular Sofa, IKEA ($1,740)
Shop

Why we chose it: A fully modular line that incorporates storage and is covered in a unique and luxe-looking upholstery.

Take it from designer Jeremiah Brent: IKEA can indeed exude quiet luxury. Spotted in an Instagram shot from his in-progress Portugal home, the Jättebo sofa looks like it could have been re-covered in a superfancy fabric. It turns out that the trendy corduroy material is straight from the Swedish retailer, too. The thick textile features an extra-wide wale that’s both cozy-looking and soft to the touch, plus the removable covers can be tossed in the washing machine. While we love the verdant green, there are two additional cover options that make switching up a color scheme down the road much easier. As another bonus, the Jättebo line is fully modular, so you can mix and combine the individual one-seaters with chaises (many of which also include storage) to fit any space.

The Stay-a-While Showstopper: &Tradition Develius Modular Sofa

Tradition

Width: Varies | Seats: Up to 6 | Returns: 14 days | Upholstery: Varies

What we like:

  • A sleek style you’ll never tire of
  • Each sofa is made to order in just 6 to 8 weeks
  • Uses wood sourced from sustainable forests

Worth noting:

  • Tight turnaround return policy

Why we chose it: This oh-so-elegant design marries pretty with practical.

You won’t be shocked to learn a Dutch designer created this utter showstopper of a modular couch. You may be shocked to learn it’s equally as comfortable as it is beautiful, though—a unicorn combination in the couch world. With its deep seats and extra-soft-to-the-touch fabric options, you’ll be tempted to stay (and stay) for hours at a time. Get creative combining the modular pieces, fabrics, and refined colors to create the couch of your dreams. Say, a nubby cream bouclé love seat to cozy up on with your honey, or an elongated navy linen couch with a chaise longue to allow for optimal leg-stretching moments.

How We Chose These Products

A modular sofa is a sizable purchase, both physically and monetarily. That’s why we took this shopping assignment seriously. We scoured the modular sofa options of reputable brands with high design but not necessarily high price points. These couches will last you for years to come, even if you move, add members to your family, or tweak your design style. Each of the above couches would be a comfy place to rest through life’s big and little moments.

Our Shopping Checklist

Design

This wouldn’t be Domino if we didn’t prioritize smart, sleek design above all else. We shopped for modular sofas with cool silhouettes, practical pieces, and last-a-lifetime styles that will make you smile every time you pass your living room.

Upholstery

The more upholstery options, the better. Some of us prefer a stain-resistant performance fabric for both the longevity of the couch and wayward wine spills. Others are down for a less kid- or pet-friendly luxe velvet. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Versatility

The more à la carte pieces a modular sofa offers, the better. “A modular sofa offers great flexibility,” says Berkus, since you can arrange (and rearrange) the pieces Tetris style. “If you need an L-shaped sectional, you can make that out of modular pieces, or you can make a chaise with a corner piece and an ottoman. Or you can break it apart and put a beautiful decorative table in between two sections with a lamp on it.” You don’t have to spend the big bucks for all of the available pieces either, just what works for your space and lifestyle. No need for an ottoman? Great. Only need one corner piece? Also great.

Comfort

Comfort is key when buying a modular sofa. If we couldn’t doze off on these couches during a movie night, they didn’t make the cut. If space allows, deep seats are the most comfortable for guests of all heights (and the occasional nap!), and soft-to-the-touch upholstery is a must. Pay attention to the distance from the top of the cushion to the ground, too, especially if you have long legs.

Ask Domino

Q: What truly makes a sofa modular?

Think of a modular sofa like playing with Legos (stick with us here) but your Lego pieces include armless chairs, corner pieces, and chaise longues that snap together (more on that, below) to create various configurations. Each piece is bought à la carte and can stand on its own or be arranged to create various shapes.

Q: What is the difference between a modular and sectional sofa?

“The brass-tacks, fundamental difference between the two is that a modular sofa can be made into a sectional sofa, but a sectional cannot be made into a modular,” says Berkus. Even though a sectional is also broken into multiple pieces, those pieces cannot reconfigure into different shapes like a modular sofa can.

Q: Beyond style and color, how do I choose a modular sofa for my space?

Before clicking “add to cart” on any modular sofa piece, measure where it will reside, then measure again. Use painter’s tape to block out where the pieces could be placed, so you won’t be unpleasantly surprised by how big (or small) they are when they arrive. Also consider any potential obstacles, like slim doorways and how the couch could be viewed from various angles of your living room.

As you’re styling your sofa, Berkus encourages pairing it with pieces from various eras. “I love an Italian ’60s- or ’70s-style modular sofa mixed with classic antiques and Swedish lighting from the ’40s, layered in a way that feels like somebody in that era was decidedly well traveled,” he says. That’s a sure way to up the ante on your modular sofa’s bespoke vibe.

Q: I don’t want to slip between my modular couch pieces while lounging. How do you keep it together?

Rest easy—no one will slip through the cracks. Modular pieces connect with metal “crocodile” clips. Picture a zigzag bracket on one side and a triangle post on the other. The clips should click into place easily, securing your sofa together, and detach just as easily so you can rearrange as desired. To nix any slipping and sliding for the sofa as a whole, place rubber pads beneath the pieces’ legs.

The Last Word

Modular sofas are the “choose your own adventure” of furniture shopping. Consider your square footage, how many people your couch should seat, and whether you like the chaise longue on the left or right. Then mix and match the pieces to your design-minded heart’s desire.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

We’re going to be honest with you because, phew, this guide was a doozy to put together: It is incredibly difficult, if not nearly impossible, to find the best sofa under $500. For starters, best is such a relative term; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, etc. Secondly, we are of the mindset that a good couch is one of life’s big investment purchases—meaning it’s likely going to cost you more than $500 if you want a well-made, enduring design you won’t grow sick of sitting on every day for years to come. However, it would be entirely imprudent not to acknowledge that both budgets and needs vary when it comes to furniture shopping. So here we are, up to our eyeballs in a polyester pool of mid-century modern designs. (Don’t worry, it gets better.)

After what felt like an innumerable amount of time spent shaking the Internet upside down and sending Slack SOS chats to fellow Domino editors, we narrowed down seven top contenders for the best sofa under $500. How did we make such resolute conclusions from this objective, uphill endeavor? We looked at an ungodly amount of reviews, weighing the firsthand pros and cons, studying how the upholstery appears in actual pictures, and deciding whether or not the sofa in question looked exactly like the five other velvet-upholstered options before it.

Our Under-$500 Favorites

Below, find our prevailing favorites chosen by category—from the best love seats and sectionals to outdoor and sleeper sofas—followed by a handful of runners-up that nearly made the budget cut. And because the under-$500 crowd can lack a bespoke charm, we also padded a small section with tips on how to customize your couch. If you’re still sitting with us, read on. (Also, be sure to check out our running list of the best sofa deals to shop this week.)

Best Love Seat: Alcott Hill Parkes Upholstered Settee

Sofas photo
Parkes 50” Upholstered Settee, Alcott Hill ($490 was $753)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 35.5-by-50-by-35 inches | Weight: 67 pounds

What we like:

  • Classic slipper-chair silhouette
  • Spindle front legs
  • Solid wood frame

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 350-pound weight capacity
  • Back cushions are not removable

The under-$500 love seat offerings are teeming with designs that skew a little too traditional (think: chunky square two-seaters) or too modern (think: glam velvet settees with slanted gold legs). In either case, the result is an aesthetic that feels either outdated or kitschy. We really had to dig in order to land this classic style with just enough positive reviews to back it. The slipper silhouette and spindle front legs give off a bespoke British vibe without treading too far into stuffy or overdone territory.

As more than one reviewer points out, the cushions cannot be removed, as the product’s description states, but the fabric itself is described as pretty, durable, and linenlike.

Best Daybed: Queer Eye Wimberly Upholstered Daybed Sofa

Sofas photo
Wimberly Upholstered Daybed, Twin Size, Olive Green Linen, Queer Eye ($420 was $475)
Shop

Materials: Linen upholstery; solid wood frame and metal legs | Dimensions: 79.5-by-43.5-by-35.5 inches | Weight: 83 pounds

What we like:

  • Available in gray or olive-green upholstery; twin or full sizes (both under $500)
  • Secured bentwood slat system

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 250-pound weight capacity
  • Mattress sold separately

A daybed is a clever hack for an affordable deep-seat or sleeper-style sofa; score the frame for under $500, an accompanying mattress for $65, and…voilà! We’re fans of this olive option from Queer Eye’s exclusive Walmart collection—not just because it offers an uncomplicated design and price point but also due to its elevated linen upholstery along with the ability to outfit its mattress in a contrasting cover. (We love this affordable clover-patterned style for the bold and this solid case for the minimalists among us.)

Best Bouclé: Wade Logan Ameriya Upholstered Loveseat

Sofas photo
Ameriya 50” Upholstered Loveseat, Wade Logan ($486 was $510)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid beechwood frame and legs | Dimensions: 30.5-by-50-by-30.25 inches

What we like:

  • Available in white, dark gray, and turmeric upholstery
  • Stain resistant
  • Marshmallow silhouette

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 600-pound weight capacity
  • Cushions are on the firmer side and not removable

While this sofa is bordering on chair-and-a-half-size territory, its compact size is more than made up for with a generous marshmallowy silhouette and cozy bouclélike upholstery that’s reminiscent of the infamous Gwyneth Paltrow chair. The accompanying reviews call it everything from cute to comfy to perfectly sized for small spaces—with many touting its ease of assembly, which simply includes screwing on the supporting legs. While some reviewers caution that the cushions are firm, there is the assumption that they will soften with time and use.

Best Wood Frame: Baxton Studio 4-Seater Bridgewater Sofa

Sofas photo
72.1″ 4-Seater Bridgewater Sofa with Wood Frame, Baxton Studio ($458)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 29.53-by-72.05-by-33.07 inches | Weight: 55 pounds

What we like:

  • Seats up to 4
  • Cushion covers are removable
  • Walnut-wood frame

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 500-pound weight capacity
  • 30-day limited warranty

This clean-lined sofa is a prime example of an affordable mid-century style that doesn’t feel cheap or overdone—thanks to its unencumbered walnut-colored wood frame paired with soothing mauve-toned upholstery. Reviewers note that, aside from firm cushions, the piece is comfortable, sturdy, and well made.

Best Outdoor: Threshold Searsburg Aluminum Deep Seating Patio Loveseat

Sofas photo
Searsburg Aluminum Deep Seating Patio Loveseat, Threshold ($450)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester upholstery; powder-coated aluminum frame | Dimensions: 31.5-by-48.03-by-28.94 inches | Weight: 28.93 pounds

What we like:

  • Weather-resistant aluminum frame
  • Made partially from recycled materials
  • Deep-seat dimensions

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 500-pound weight capacity
  • 1-year limited warranty

Going the budget route when shopping for new outdoor furniture is a big gamble; odds are you’re going to end up with a piece that’ll get you through a season or two before it ultimately succumbs to the elements and needs to be replaced. Our advice? Skip the cheap “wood” options that are suckers for water damage and opt for a frame that’s made of metal—like our favorite under-$500 find here from Target.

Reviewers have dubbed assembly for this two-seater as a less-than-30-minute affair; described its overall design as clean, simplistic, and fancy; and called out the cushions as incredibly soft with a spring-back-into-place sturdiness post-sitting.

Best Sleeper: Mistana Dingler Upholstered Sleeper Sofa

Sofas photo
Dingler 77” Upholstered Sleeper Sofa, Mistana ($316 was $760)
Shop

Materials: 100% linen upholstery; solid wood and manufactured wood frame; solid wood legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 33-by-77-by-32.5 inches | Weight: 101.5 pounds

What we like:

  • 100% linen upholstery
  • Sloped-arm silhouette
  • Multiposition back converts into a twin-size bed or lounge position

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 600-pound weight capacity
  • Cushions are not removable

We did a double take upon discovering this 100% linen sleeper in the raging sea of polyester options. As an added bonus to its A+ upholstery and understated silhouette (we appreciate a softly sloped arm), the Wayfair gem comes backed by a lot of buzz (we’re talking 3,000-plus 5-star reviews).

Highlights range from shoppers touting it as easy to assemble and spot-clean to commenting on how beautiful and expensive the material looks in person. More than one points out that houseguests are unable to guess this sofa’s true sleeper identity. As far as comfort goes, the cushions are described as being on the firmer side for sleeping—but that’s nothing a twin-size mattress topper won’t fix when it’s time to transform it into sleep mode.

Best Deep Seat: Amazon Square-Arm Chenille Sofa

Sofas photo
71.25″ Square-Arm Chenille Sofa, Amazon ($429)
Shop

Materials: Chenille upholstery; metal frame; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 33.07-by-71.25-by-27.5 inches

What we like:

  • Assembly tools included
  • Low-profile frame
  • 750-pound weight capacity

Worth noting:

  • Covers are removable and washable
  • Cushions are removable
  • Sturdy metal frame

While Amazon isn’t our go-to for big furniture buys, the Internet is not exactly overflowing with big comfy couches for under $500—so here we are. The reviews on this surprisingly good-looking deep-seater, while limited, are for the most part overwhelmingly positive. What really drove our decision home, however, were the pictures, which showcase the questionable chenille upholstery as looking smooth and almost linenlike instead of cheap and spotty. One reviewer even notes that the covers, apart from being soft and wearing well, are removable and can be tossed in the wash.

A handful of shoppers likened the vibe of this sofa to that of the IKEA Kivik or Rove Concepts Porter, a very tricky aesthetic to find for under $500.

Best Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Bean Bag Sofa

Materials: 100% velvet-polyester upholstery; expanded polystyrene-bead fill | Dimensions: 71-by-35-by-28 inches Weight: 33 pounds

What we like:

  • Arrives fully assembled
  • Spot-clean only

Worth noting:

  • Made to order in the U.S.
  • Lightweight

This pick is the only sofa on our list lacking firsthand reviewer feedback—but we decided to take a chance. After all, UO offers a one-year furniture warranty and accepts returns within a 30-day window from the delivery date. While the thought of a beanbag sofa might conjure up haunting images of dorm rooms past, this sophisticated iteration makes a compellingly chic case. It comes in four subtly retro hues (from bold blood orange to minimalist ivory) and three sizes (single-, double-, and triple-seater). The legless design feels less like a bag of beans made for kids and undergrads and more like a variation of the modular sofa trend, with the ability to stand alone or cluster together for a playfully stylish lounge statement.

Best Slipcovered: Lark Manor Alonnie Upholstered Sofa

Sofas photo
Alonnie Upholstered Sofa, Lark Manor ($490 was $1,340)
Shop

Materials: 100% polyester-linen upholstery; metal frame; plastic legs; foam-filled cushions | Dimensions: 36.75-by-75-by-30 inches Weight: 79.25 pounds

What we like:

  • Removable cushions and covers
  • Rolled armrests
  • Linenlike upholstery

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools not included
  • 750-pound weight capacity
  • 1-year limited warranty

Searching for one of the best slipcovered sofas under $500 was, as Cher Horowitz put it, like searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie—but we did the best we could, folks. This Wayfair winner was one of the only true slipcovered options we could wrangle that features an uncomplicated, classic silhouette (we love a rolled arm and skirted base), linenlike upholstery, and decent reviewer feedback—all of which points toward the piece being a more than decent purchase for the price point.

Let’s start with the cons first: The cushions are described as stiff, and the upholstery a bit thick (one reviewer called it “denimlike”). These two main points of contention don’t strike us as total deal breakers, as they can be easily remedied with a few of our upgrade hacks, featured below—read on to see what we mean. As for the pros: It’s easy to assemble (we’re talking 10 minutes), looks better in person (peep the pictures), and holds the washable promise of growing softer with time.

Best Sectional: Amazon Reversible L-Shaped Sectional Sofa

Sofas photo
80″ Reversible L-Shaped Sectional Sofa, Tbfit ($400)
Shop

Materials: Linen-cotton upholstery; solid wood frame and legs | Dimensions: 54-by-80-by-30.75 inches Weight: 132 pounds

What we like:

  • Linen-cotton upholstery
  • Bolster cushions included
  • Movable chaise longue

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools included
  • 660-pound weight capacity
  • Available in ivory beige, dark gray, and brown PU leather

We’ll end with the most monumental triumph on our list: an actually attractive, reviewer-vetted sectional sofa for under $500. How did we select it? For starters, it’s covered in cotton-linen upholstery and made from a solid wood frame securely situated atop wood legs paired with metal interior support reinforcement. What further sets it apart from the synthetic, manufactured rest is an understated silhouette and soft ivory-beige colorway—a rarity in the harshly mid-century modern–style, 50-shades-of-gray group that we fought through to find it. Then there’s the customizability of the L-shaped sofa, featuring a movable chaise that can reconfigure to sit left, right, or function separately as an independent ottoman. And to top it all off, the bonus of two included bolster cushions.

Positive feedback from Amazon reviewers dubs it the “perfect neutral couch” as well as the ideal sofa size for a small space or studio apartment. Others even tout the cushion covers as being easy to remove and toss in the wash. Negative feedback commonly touches on the piece’s low profile (which one reviewer remedied by replacing the legs—more on that, below) and overall small size for a sectional sofa. As far as comfort goes, the consensus is that its cushions are substantial and surprisingly cozy.

Best Vintage: Kaiyo Conover Chair Company Upholstered Skirted Sofa

Sofas photo
Conover Chair Company Upholstered Skirted Sofa, Kaiyo ($293 was $1,000)
Shop

Materials: Polyester upholstery; solid wood frame and legs | Dimensions: 90-by-31-by-35 inches

What we like:

  • 75% off discount
  • One-of-a-kind piece

Worth noting:

  • Gently used
  • Sales are final

Another strategy for scoring the best sofa under $500 is to go the vintage route. Aside from scouring Facebook Marketplace and thrifting at local antiques haunts, we’re partial to surfing the deeply discounted offerings from used homewares site Kaiyo (think of it like the RealReal for couches). Our latest favorite? This pretty patterned sofa with a skirted bottom and chic rolled arms. Be sure to check the product descriptions and pictures closely for signs of wear and tear; this particular couch is described as “gently used,” which, judging from pictures, looks nearly new to our deal-hungry eyes. However, even those sofas that seem a little worse for wear can be given a new lease on life with a reupholstery project—or with a good-looking couch cover tossed on top. (See two other vintage Kaiyo favorites, below.)

Our Just-Over-$500 Favorites

While, yes, this is a story about sofas under $500, we couldn’t resist tossing in a few top contenders that missed the mark by a couple of bucks. And in some cases, a couple hundred. However, getting what you want—especially where good design is concerned—is worth the extra investment. All of our runners-up are under $1,000, come vetted with positive reviews, and feature enticing materials—from a cane settee by Leanne Ford to a cloudlike couch with down-filled cushions to even a blue leopard love seat.

How to Upgrade an Under-$500 Sofa

If we learned one thing on our hunt for the best sofa under $500, it’s that the options—aesthetically speaking—are limited. Even if your shopping situation sticks you in this mainly polyester pool of mid-century modern–style couches, you can still make a budget-friendly breaststroke toward the design-forward deep end. Whether it’s swapping out those garishly gold legs for a black ash wood set, hiding the spotty chenille upholstery beneath a striped slipcover, or cozying up the stiff cushions with a stylish topper, these easy tweaks will help customize your sofa to fit your particular taste.

1. Change Out the Legs for a More Custom Look

2. Use a Couch Cover or Bed Linens to Hide Cheap Upholstery

3. Layer in a Topper for Extra Cushioning

Did someone say “slumber party”?

Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

The best daybeds are totally practical: They make turning a nursery or home office into a guest room a cinch. But they also add a hint of glamour, whether you’re using one for luxurious midday naps or pulling out a trundled version for an old-fashioned slumber party.

“I love daybeds because they are space saving and add versatility to a room,” says Emma Kemper, founder and principal designer of Emma Beryl Interiors. “Since you orient a daybed on a wall the way you would a sofa, you don’t lose floor space like you would with a bed protruding into a room.” Both Kemper and Jessica Kain Barton, the principal designer at J Kathryn Interiors, point out the multiuse options presented by a daybed. “They offer so many solutions while also being inarguably chic when done right,” says Barton.

Below, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite daybeds, including a version designed by an icon of architecture—and one that comes in under $300.

Our Favorites

Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Barcelona Couch Domino
Barcelona Couch, Design Within Reach ($14,214)
Shop

Material: Leather | Colors: Black, cream, tan | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Part of design history
  • Modern but incredibly versatile

Worth noting:

  • The highest price point on this list
  • If you’re buying online, look for an authorized retailer to avoid knockoffs

Why we chose it: A legendary piece that looks fresh more than half a century after its debut.

Some pieces need no introduction, and this daybed is one of them. Since architect and furniture designer Mies van der Rohe introduced his version of the Barcelona chair in the early 1950s, it’s become a staple in design-minded households and offices alike. The bed strips the classic silhouette down to the barest bones, rendered in gleaming steel and buttery-soft leather, creating a statement that works in almost every space. While the price tag is high, it’s a piece of design history you’ll have—and love—forever.

For the Tailored Sophisticate: Lulu and Georgia Elvie Chaise

velvet daybed
Elvie Chaise, Lulu and Georgia ($3,698)
Shop

Material: Polyester velvet fabric, wood and laminate frame, metal legs | Colors: Camel, cognac, moss | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Ships with 2 plush bolsters
  • Made in the U.S. (Elliston, Virginia)

Worth noting:

  • Ships in 8 to 10 weeks

Why we chose it: A polished silhouette that’s still cozy enough for reading breaks and naps, thanks to a down-blend pillow-top cushion.

“A gorgeous upholstered daybed that can be used as a settee any other day will do the trick,” says Barton, and this one definitely fits the bill. The perfect marriage of style and function, its deep bench and thick padding make it comfortable for sitting near a window with a new read in hand and dozing off for a midafternoon nap. The polyester-velvet fabric, in a trendy shade of cognac, has a subtle sheen to it for an elevated, luxe look. To keep this one looking fresh, vacuuming regularly is highly recommended.

For the Natural-Material Lover: Anthropologie Pari Rattan Daybed

Pari Rattan Daybed
Pari Rattan Daybed, Anthropologie ($998)
Shop

Material: Rattan, reinforced with mahogany and plywood | Colors: Natural, black | Trundle: No | Mattress included: No

What we like:

  • Could be styled in a variety of ways
  • Solid construction

Worth noting:

  • This one is BYOM (bring your own mattress)

Why we chose it: A boho-chic daybed.

If your style leans more garden eclectic, this daybed will look great next to your collection of houseplants. Large enough to fit a twin mattress, shoppers share the Pari rattan daybed from Anthropologie is a dreamy addition to a home office or guest room. “It is really sturdy yet lightweight enough for me to move it by myself to wherever I feel like lounging for the day,” one reviewer writes, describing it as “nap heaven.” Another, who’s 5-feet-8, confirms they’re able to stretch out on it no problem to relax or meditate. And as an added bonus, the construction makes it possible to slide storage boxes or extra pillows directly underneath.

For the Material Minimalist: Katy Skelton Belvedere Daybed

Katy Skelton Belvedere Daybed Domino
Belvedere Daybed, Katy Skelton ($3,970)
Shop

Material: Crypton fabric and a variety of metal finishes | Colors: Options ranging from blush to deep navy | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Customizable frames and fabrics
  • Delicate yet sturdy frame construction
  • Made in North Carolina

Worth noting:

  • Can take between 6 and 12 weeks to arrive once ordered

Why we chose it: Interesting materials elevate this simple, well-made piece.

Georgia-based designer Katy Skelton’s pieces marry sleek, contemporary style with classic American craftsmanship. Take this daybed, for example. Made in North Carolina, once the capital of furniture making in the United States, each one is made to order, which gives you options: A charcoal frame with a soft white fabric mattress is light and airy, while an oil-rubbed bronze frame has an antique feel, especially when paired with a rich, rust-colored topper.

Serena & Lily slipcovered daybed
Presidio Trundle Daybed, Serena & Lily ($3,358 was $4,198)
Shop

Material: Performance, linen, and other fabric choices for slipcover; engineered hardwood frame | Colors: Varies | Trundle: Yes | Mattress included: No

What we like:

  • Constructed by hand in North Carolina
  • You can purchase additional slipcovers to swap out
  • Headboard and footboard are padded for extra comfort
  • 140-plus fabric choices, including pinstripes, gingham, and toile patterns

Worth noting:

  • Dry-clean only
  • Custom-made in 6 weeks, then may take up to 10 weeks to ship

Why we chose it: The perfect balance of laid-back and tailored.

Serena & Lily is our go-to for customizable, slipcovered pieces of furniture—including daybeds. With a multitude of fabric and pattern choices, shoppers can make their English cottage dreams come true with a blue pinstripe or toile print, though there are also plenty of solid hues to choose from, too. What we love the most about this timeless silhouette, however, is the fact that you’d never guess it hides a twin-size trundle bed (up to 6.5 inches thick and 72 inches long).

CB2 Boho Black Daybed Domino
Boho Black Daybed, CB2 ($1,399)
Shop

Material: Rattan, wood, poly-blend bouclé | Colors: Black and tan frame, cream mattress | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Can be purchased as a set or as individual pieces
  • Both frame and mattress are a neutral canvas

Worth noting:

  • Shipping delays are possible

Why we chose it: The woven rattan backrest of this Spanish-designed daybed lends itself to a wide array of styling options.

Part of CB2’s long-standing partnership with Spanish design house Mermelada Estudio, this daybed was inspired by the age-old tradition of the siesta—an afternoon nap that leaves you refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the day (and night). The rattan backrest is both timeless and on trend, and the lush cream-colored bouclé mattress would be an ideal backdrop for a selection of colorful throw pillows.

For the Deal Hunter: IKEA Blakullen Daybed

Ikea Blakullen Daybed Domino
Blakullen Daybed, IKEA ($299)
Shop

Material: Wood veneer, poly-blend fabric | Color: Blue | Trundle: No | Mattress Included: No

What we like:

  • Less than $200
  • Headboard shape can be used to create privacy

Worth noting:

  • Mattress is sold separately
  • Like most IKEA products, assembly is required

Why we chose it: At less than $200, this IKEA daybed looks more expensive than it actually is.

IKEA is a must-visit destination for bargain hunters looking to furnish a space on a budget without sacrificing style, and this daybed is no exception. The clever headboard shape serves as a comfortable spot to lean against when sitting and can be used to create privacy while reading (or watching Netflix). This design would work particularly well in a dorm room or studio apartment, where furniture has to serve more than one function.

For the Small-Space Dweller: DHP Franklin Mid-Century Upholstered Daybed

DHP Franklin Mid Century Upholstered Daybed Domino
DHP Franklin Mid-Century Upholstered Daybed, Amazon ($320 was $514)
Shop

Material: Velvet, wood | Colors: Deep blue, black, olive green | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Ships within 1 to 2 weeks of ordering
  • Wide enough to work as an everyday bed

Worth noting:

  • Assembly required

Why we chose it: Ideal for a studio apartment (or those who want to maximize their space), this daybed can be a bed by night and a sofa by day.

This daybed—available on Amazon—is one you’ll want to consider if your bedroom is also your living room (or your guest room is also your home office). It’s wide enough to hold a full-size mattress, meaning you could sleep comfortably on this every night, while the velvet-covered frame makes it chic enough for company. “I love to add throw pillows all along the back of the daybed, making it a space that really welcomes you to sit down and relax,” says Kemper. We’d style this one with pillows in a variety of lush fabrics.

For the Consummate Host: West Elm Urban Daybed & Trundle

West Elm Urban Daybed And Trundle Domino
Urban Daybed & Trundle, West Elm ($1,199)
Shop

Material: Poly-blend fabric, wood frame | Colors: We like the natural linen and inky blue velvet | Trundle: Yes | Mattress included: No

What we like:

  • Seats and sleeps 2
  • Trundle is easy to slide out

Worth noting:

  • Both mattresses need to be purchased separately

Why we chose it: A daybed made for sleepovers with a grown-up vibe.

A daybed strategically placed in a home office or nursery means the room can turn into a cozy spot for guests when the time comes. This West Elm option takes being a good host to the next level: With a slide-out section beneath, it instantly becomes a bed that sleeps two. Younger kids will love the novelty factor, and older guests will be grateful to have a comfortable place to get some rest. It’s also one of the most efficient options on our list—twice the sleeping space in a compact footprint.

Hem Palo Modular Lounger Domino
Palo Lounger, Hem ($2,549)
Shop

Material: Wool-blend fabric, steel frame | Colors: Various shades | Trundle: No | Mattress included: Yes

What we like:

  • Striking colors
  • Sleek, contemporary shape

Worth noting:

  • Sits lower to the floor

Why we chose it: In a cheerful yellow (or vibrant cobalt blue or deep green or…), this low-rise daybed lends a stylish dash of color.

This daybed offers practical, flexible seating, but we’d venture that it’s almost a work of art, too, particularly when it’s the standout in a room otherwise outfitted in neutral whites and grays. The blue is reminiscent of the one used in postmodern design, giving it a fun, bold vibe that still manages to feel incredibly fresh. Lower to the ground than some of our other picks, this daybed would look equally at home in a cheerful playroom or a hip sunken living room.

Affordable Daybeds We Also Love

If you don’t want to spend more than $500 on a daybed, we hear you. Below, shop a few more budget-friendly finds.

How We Chose These Products

To pick our favorite daybeds, we considered style first and foremost, but also dimensions, trundles, accessories, and more. We wanted a well-rounded selection of designs and brands, as well as various price points.

Our Shopping Checklist

Style and Aesthetics

When it comes to daybeds, a key question you’ll want to ask is how mid-century you want to go. Many of our picks take inspiration from the clean-lined styles of the 1950s and ’60s, and pieces with chrome legs or frames and solid-color fabrics abound. If that’s not your vibe, we also love pieces inspired by the glamour of the 1920s, with soft velvet pillows, upholstered frames, and gold-tone hardware.

Standard Dimensions

Most daybeds are roughly the size of a twin bed, give or take a few inches; sleep one person comfortably; and seat two or three when used as a couch. If you want something more spacious, we suggest looking at one of our wider picks.

Mattresses and Trundles

How often is someone going to sleep on your daybed? That should guide you when shopping for a mattress. As a rule of thumb, mattresses that come with daybeds tend to be firmer, while buying the mattress separately gives you more flexibility. Another upside to buying a mattress separately is that you can choose something meant for nightly sleeping, which will feel different than something meant for sitting and the occasional nap.

A trundle bed is a daybed with a bonus in the form of an additional mattress, usually one that slides out from the bottom of the frame. For maximizing sleeping space for guests, they can’t be beat (especially for kids who don’t need as much space).

Assembly

To assemble or not to assemble? That is the question, and our list includes options that come fully put together and those you’ll have to construct yourself. If people are going to sleep on your daybed, it’s worth springing for a pro to help you put everything together, since you’ll want to make sure it’s sturdy enough for tossing and turning.

Ask Domino

Q: What type of mattress is best for a daybed?

For daybeds that will also serve as couches or loungers, the firmer, the better. Something softer might work for a piece that mainly functions as a bed, but won’t be as comfortable for sitting. In terms of thickness, it’s best to avoid a pillow-top mattress or anything with extra padding.

Q: Do daybeds come with box springs? Do they need a box spring?

Most daybeds don’t come with box springs and are designed to work without them.

Q: It’s acceptable to use a daybed as a couch, right?

Of course. It’s acceptable and, in many cases, a smart way to save space and money. If you’re going to use a daybed as a couch, look for one that has arms and a back to ensure your seated guests will be just as comfortable as anyone stretching out and drifting off to sleep.

Q: How long do daybeds last, on average?

A daybed that gets regular use will have to be replaced more often than one that sits in a guest room. If the frame is sturdy, you can hold onto it for close to a decade, replacing the mattress every few years.

The Last Word

A daybed gives you options for every space, transforming a home office into a guest room and a living room into a nap zone. Whether you look for something sleek or cozy, in soft leather or washable cotton, the mix of comfort and style just might make it the most popular piece of furniture in the house.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

If love seats are outdated, no one told Noz Nozawa. The San Francisco–based designer swears by the compact two-seater sofa, with her own living room touting a 19th-century French settee. As the shortest of the couch category—typically spanning just 60 inches in length—it’s easy to see why this furniture piece is often dismissed by shoppers as suitable only for smaller spaces. Nozawa, however, argues that the best love seats were built to be stars in larger living arrangements. “Longer sofas can elongate proportions to the point that some pieces look stretched,” Nozawa explains. “I think the proportions of a love seat make some seating silhouettes shine much better.” While they may not be built for nappers or Netflix bingers, love seats are a boon for entertainers—they offer a stylish seat that encourages intimate conversations around a cluster of martini tables.

While this particular Tarma two-seater is inspired by an antique rug, you can also purchase it in two other playful patterns: a chic charcoal stripe paired with burgundy fringe or another vintage-inspired textile motif.

Available in seven different fabrics, the flat-packed sofa features a tubular steel frame and detachable modular pillows that make it a breeze to assemble at home—plus the down-padded, high-density foam cushions ensure you won’t ever want to get up.

Best Bouclé: CB2 Gwenyth Bouclé Loveseat

What we like:

  • Certified sustainable engineered wood frame
  • Cozy marshmallow silhouette

Worth noting:

  • Bouclélike polyester upholstery

We’re convinced that popping a squat on Gwyneth Paltrow’s love seat for CB2 is the decor equivalent of resting on a cloud—and not just because it’s covered in It material bouclé. Better yet, the plush fibers and rounded silhouette nail that high-end, luxurious look without the RH price tag. Pair it with or without pillows and a throw blanket for a glamorous take that never looks out of style.

Best Armless: Blu Dot Bloke Armless Sofa

Sofas photo
Bloke 60″ Armless Sofa, Blu Dot ($2,310)

  • Originally designed as a sectional

Worth noting:

  • Some assembly required
  • Ships via freight
  • 30-day return policy

Remember armless furniture? It’s cool again, according to stylist Benjamin Reynaert. The Bloke by Blu Dot is a 60-inch armless wonder that would do just fine squeezed between two walls or styled like an armchair in a gigantic great room. The biggest benefit of choosing this look is significantly less visual real estate—which, let’s be honest, is probably a luxury already hard to come by if you’re choosing a two-seater over a sectional. Though its sides are free, we love the high, deep back that feels like a comforting embrace.

Best Slipcovered: Serena & Lily Spruce Street Slipcovered Loveseat

Sofas photo
Spruce Street Slipcovered Loveseat, Serena & Lily ($3,898)

  • Customizable fabrics and patterns
  • Generous seat depth

Worth noting:

  • Arrives in 8 to 10 weeks
  • Available in performance fabrics
  • Spot-clean or professional cleaning service only

One of the most popular styles of the year, slipcovered sofas are no longer as stuffy as their predecessors once were. Serena & Lily’s Spruce Street love seat doesn’t come with tassels or tied bows; rather it offers a streamlined, upholstered look for the most sophisticated living rooms—and it’s supremely washable, to boot. Though it does appeal to a younger buyer, it’s by no means a starter sofa; this is an investment piece that you’ll have for years to come. If yours is a lively household with kids and pets, we recommend an acrylic performance fabric, like the Perennials line.

Best Beanbag: Urban Outfitters Dylan Velvet Double-Seater Bean Bag Sofa

Sofas photo
Dylan Velvet Double-Seater Bean Bag Sofa, Urban Outfitters ($379)
Shop

What we like:

  • Made to order in the U.S.

  • Spot-clean only

Materials: 100% velvet-polyester upholstery; expanded polystyrene-bead fill | Dimensions: 53 inches long | Weight: 24 pounds

This elevated take on the traditional beanbag chair makes for a playfully retro love seat moment. We appreciate the multiple configuration options—from one- to two- to three-seaters—that afford this legless design a modular edge. The chic velvet upholstery comes in four subtle hues: bold blood orange, minimalist ivory, light chartreuse, and slatelike brown. The best part? It’s made to order in the U.S. and arrives fully assembled, weighing an easy-to-move 24 pounds.

Best Leather: Cavett Leather Wood Frame Loveseat

Sofas photo
Cavett Leather Wood Frame Loveseat, Crate & Barrel ($1,999)
Shop

Materials: Full-grain aniline leather upholstery; sustainable kiln-dried walnut wood frame; soy-based polyfoam cushions | Dimensions: 51 inches long

What we like:

  • Sustainable wood frame
  • Oil and wax finish that patinates over time

Worth noting:

  • Leather is prone to wrinkles, scarring, and color variation
  • Best kept out of direct sunlight

This supersleek seat isn’t your boyfriend’s boring sofa. Though often relegated to basements or man caves, leather is perfect for love seats—it is soft yet durable, often outlasts fabric, and is easy to clean—and deserves a spot in your living room or bedroom. That’s especially true if it appears on this cantilevered, slatted walnut number from Crate & Barrel. With a compact frame that could pull double duty as a bench at a dining table, these caramel cushions will patina over time, taking on a weathered, lived-in look that will only encourage you to lounge on it longer.

Best Outdoor: Neighbor Terra Aluminum Outdoor Lounge Loveseat

Sofas photo
Terra Aluminum Outdoor Lounge Loveseat, Olive, Neighbor ($2,590)

Our Shopping Checklist

Fillings and Fabric

“The fabric and filling of a love seat are important for both aesthetics and comfort,” stresses Kuo. Her advice is to go with feather-filled fibers since they’re durable but still pliable enough to conform to your body, creating a plusher feel that isn’t as stiff as foam and is less likely to start sagging.

Fabric, however, is a personal preference. At the moment, she’s loving rich mohair and velvet for a sophisticated look, but recommends cotton if you’re on the lookout for something a bit more timeless. Other natural fabrics, like linen, can be a sophisticated choice but require a tad more upkeep. No matter the visual you aim to achieve, a performance fabric (think: synthetic blends of nylon, polyester, and vinyl) or quality leather is always a safe bet for households with children or pets.

Design

Love seats are made for nearly every design style, but Kuo says there’s increased interest in modern classic and French-country styles. The former skews traditional and can be used to create a full-size seating optical illusion. “French country, on the other hand, has distinct elements and detailing that creates an elegant appearance,” she notes—perfect for complementing a more elevated aesthetic.

Styling

Couches are great for napping, but it’s the petite proportions of love seats that draw Nozawa’s eye. “To me, love seats look best in nooks like bay windows and living rooms that are much longer than they are wide,” she says. And they are a good sectional or sofa alternative in small spaces. “It provides the seating you need without overwhelming the room the way a traditional sofa would, and often allows for more versatility when arranging or changing up the layout,” offers Kuo. “They’re a great addition in spaces like the living room, study, or even primary bedroom.”

Ask Domino

Q: How long is a love seat?

Love seats earned their moniker due to courting couples, with a design just big enough to comfortably seat two individuals. In comparison, sofas are much larger, sitting a handful of people or allowing someone to fully stretch out for a nap (you’d likely feel a bit more cramped on a love seat). In general, these pieces are no bigger than 64 inches long but can be quite small (sometimes only 50 inches, though Nozawa argues it’s unnecessary to harp on actual dimensions).

Q: How do I style a love seat?

You can style a love seat much like you would any sofa. To dress up a plain fabric, add a patterned throw blanket and drape it over an arm, along the back, or tucked under a pillow (for the latter, our Style team recommends a solid velvet). To make a love seat look bigger than it actually is, proportions are key. In small rooms, choose one that doesn’t dominate a lot of visual space, ideally something armless or streamlined with a straight silhouette that doesn’t lean too far back.“The proportions of a love seat are what makes this petite sofa size such an asset,” shares Nozawa. “If your space would be ideally laid out with a love seat and two armchairs, you could explore letting all these pieces be chunky, since there will be more open floor space in a room without a larger sofa.”

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

Sofas see the best of times—like catching up with friends and family members—and the worst of “who got peanut butter on the couch?” times. Between pet hair, sticky-fingered children, and the occasional wayward glass of wine, chances are your seating situation is put through the wringer every day. That’s where a slipcovered sofa comes in handy.

“Adding a slipcover to a sofa is an easy way to bring durability to a couch that gets lots of wear and tear and needs to be washed or spot-cleaned often,” says Bria Hammel, CEO and creative director of Bria Hammel Interiors. The best slipcovered sofas don’t compromise style or comfort and are easy enough to clean, too—preferably in a washing machine. We scoured the market for the best slipcovered sofas and are confident any of these options will set the stage for your living room design and feel like new for way longer.

Our Favorites

Best Lived-In Look: Crate & Barrel Ever Slipcovered Sofa by Leanne Ford

Slipcovered Sofas CrateAndBarrel 1
Shop

Cushions: Down | Width: 77 or 89 inches | Care: Machine washable

What we like:

  • It’s both elegant and laid-back
  • Includes 2 throw pillows
  • The slipcover is stain resistant

Worth noting:

  • Some fabric options are out of stock
  • Down filled, which requires fluffing and may shed some feathers

Why we chose it: This sofa brings a touch of Leanne Ford’s effortless aesthetic into your home.

Raise your hand if you’re a Leanne Ford superfan (we are). Add a dose of her laid-back style to your living room with this slipcovered sofa she designed for Crate & Barrel. Guests will be begging to sink into its cloudlike cushions all night with appetizers and a glass of wine. Once you’ve sufficiently broken it in over time, simply toss the slipcover in the wash and it will look refreshed. This sofa is down-filled, so you’ll want to do regular cushion fluffing.

Best Make-It-Your-Own Modular: West Elm Remi Slipcover Modular Sofa

Slipcovered Sofas Westelm 1
Shop

Cushions: Memory foam | Width: 70 or 105 inches | Care: Spot-clean

What we like:

  • Its modular design can be reconfigured into various styles
  • Plush
  • Dozens of upholstery options

Worth noting:

  • Expect delivery in 6-plus weeks

Why we chose it: Go semi-custom to have more say in your living room seating.

Modular sofas are appealing enough on their own. They allow you to arrange and rearrange the pieces, essentially playing Legos with their various armless chairs, corner chairs, and chaise longues. Add in the fact that this one from West Elm is slipcovered, allowing for easy cleaning, and you have a pretty perfect sofa. Mix and match the pieces to your heart’s desire. We also love that it’s made with sink-in-and-stay memory foam cushions for extra comfort through any show binge.

Best Bespoke Feel: Maiden Home The Dune

Slipcovered Sofas MaidenHome 1
Shop

Cushions: Combination of down, feather, and fiber | Width: Many options, ranging from 60 to 100 inches | Care: Machine washable

What we like:

  • Each slipcover is hand-sewn
  • Available in 8 sizes
  • The flange seams provide a crisp fit

Worth noting:

  • Ready for delivery in 8 to 10 weeks

Why we chose it: The crisp seams on this sofa are tailored to perfection.

Forget any notions you have of ill-fitting slipcovers. This Maiden Home design is anything but, with a hand-sewn cover that fits snugly. The clean lines are just one benefit of this couch, though. Add easy maintenance, durable performance fabrics, and cushions to melt into that list, and you have a top-notch slipcovered sofa you’ll love for years to come.

Best Under $500: Lark Manor Alonnie Upholstered Sofa

Sofas photo
Lark Manor Alonnie Upholstered Sofa, Wayfair ($490 was $1,340)
Shop

Cushions: Foam / Upholstery: 100% polyester linen | Width: 75 inches | Care: Machine washable

What we like:

  • Removeable cushions and covers
  • Linen-like upholstery

Worth noting:

  • Assembly tools not included
  • Stiff cushions

Why we chose it: A rare budget-conscious favorite from our guide to the best sofa under $500.

Landing a decent slipcovered sofa for under $500 is no easy feat—which is why this incredibly affordable Wayfair find made the selective cut for our top-tier list. While some reviewers knock the stiff cushions and thick, denim-like fabric, the overall positive feedback surrounding its ease of assembly and washability makes it a worthwhile purchase for the price point. Plus, the real-life pictures do this classic skirted silhouette more justice than the digitalized product shots.

Best Under $1,000: IKEA Uppland Sofa

Ikea Uppland Sofa
Uppland Sofa, IKEA ($849)
Shop

Cushions: Combination of pocket springs, foam, and polyester fibers | Width: 88.25 inches | Care: Machine washable

What we like:

  • Under $1,000
  • Easy assembly (that’s saying something for IKEA)
  • 10-year limited warranty

Worth noting:

  • Some will find it too firm
  • Cushion covers can’t be flipped over

Why we chose it: The understudy of IKEA’s beloved, and now retired, Ektorp design.

When IKEA sent its Ektorp sofa out to pasture, many shoppers were dismayed. That is, until the Uppland sofa came onto the scene. Its classic look and machine washable slipcover, all for less than $1,000, make the couch an ideal budget buy or bonus room/den/basement furnishing. Many reviewers go to bat for Uppland’s comfort and depth, and several say that assembly was easy. With seven slipcovers (replacements start at $69), there’s a range of color options—but it’s a good idea to take a closer look at the materials each is made from, as they differ. Some buyers also note a few important things: It sits on the firmer side, the cushions can’t be flipped, and you need to let the back cushions expand for a day or so out of the packaging before they are fully fluffed.

Best All-Day Home Base: Cisco Home Donato Sofa

Slipcovered Sofas Cisco 1
Shop

Cushions: Many options, including foam, feather, latex, and down | Width: 78 inches | Care: Professionally clean

What we like:

  • Relaxed, inviting style
  • Can choose between many fill types
  • All the upholstery options are made with high-quality natural fibers

Worth noting:

  • The cushions regularly need to be fluffed and rotated
  • No warranty for the slipcover

Why we chose it: Customizable to be the most comfortable, whatever that means to you.

This slipcovered sofa feels just as cozy as it looks, and that’s saying something. What’s comfortable to one is too soft or too firm to another, though, which is why Cisco Home offers various fill options—foam, feather, down, latex, and combinations of all of them. The only problem? You may have a hard time crawling out from your spot to bed at night. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Best Beachside Vibes: Serena & Lily Norfolk Sofa

serena and lily norfolk sofa
Norfolk Sofa (96 inches), Serena & Lily ($6,598)
Shop

Cushions: Combination of down, feather, and a spring core wrapped in poly-foam | Width: 96 inches, 108 inches, or 120 inches | Care: Spot-clean

What we like:

  • The perfect blend of laid-back and tailored
  • 145 fabric options
  • Handmade by furniture makers in North Carolina

Worth noting:

  • Arrives in 6 to 10 weeks

Why we chose it: You don’t need an ocean view to revel in this one’s beachy feel.

Bring a relaxed yet sophisticated look to your living room—whether you’re by the sea or not. Serena & Lily doesn’t skimp on the customization options for this couch, so dress its clean lines however you’d like, whether that’s with stripes in performance fabric, gingham linen, or clean white cotton. Narrow down the 145 fabric choices by color, type (linen, leather, cotton, performance, and more), and pattern (solid is also available).

Best Quick Delivery: Stone & Beam Rustin Contemporary Down-Filled Sofa

Sofas photo
Rustin Contemporary Down-Filled Sofa, 89″, Stone & Beam ($885 was $1,100)
Shop

Cushions: Feather mix | Width: 89 inches | Care: Machine washable

What we like:

  • Purchase, then have it in your home within days
  • The feather-mix cushions are particularly plush
  • Toss the slipcover in the wash for easy cleaning

Worth noting:

  • Only available in cream, flax, or gray
  • Upholstery is polyester

Why we chose it: You could be resting on this minimalist beauty as early as tomorrow.

Patience is a virtue, but if you don’t have weeks (much less months) to wait for a couch to be delivered, opt for this one by Amazon’s in-house furniture label, Stone & Beam. There aren’t dozens of upholstery options to sort through, and for the decision fatigued among us, that’s a relief. Simply choose between the linen-like neutrals, featuring reversible cushions and a solid wood frame. No assembly is needed either, so quickly unbox it and then kick your feet up knowing you made a solid decision.

Best Built-In Recliner: Homebody The Couch

Homebody The Couch
The Couch, Homebody ($4,490)
Shop

Cushions: Feather, cotton, and foam mix | Width: Varies, 90.56 to 166.93 inches  | Care: Varies; linen and pet-friendly are dry cleaning recommended but machine washable; velvet is dry-clean only

What we like:

  • Modular
  • Speedy shipping
  • 7 fabric selections

Worth noting:

  • Two-seater with recliner starts at $4,500

Why we chose it: Recline without looking like you’re turning into your parents.

Reclining sofas aren’t usually synonymous with style. But when our assistant editor, Raven McMillan, came across furniture startup Homebody, which promises to deliver a comfier, cool kid–approved version of a La-Z-Boy, she was sold. With all kinds of configurations possible, this modular piece of furniture didn’t take McMillan long to assemble on her own, and the final result looks like an expensive slipcovered sofa. The recliner simply snaps into place and plugs into an outlet, and the moving piece only needs 2 inches of clearance from the wall. USB and USB-C inputs are hidden under the cushions, which means charging a phone or laptop is within arm’s reach. All seven fabric selections (with swatch samples available) are treated as stain resistant, which helps with pet paws and accidental spills.

Best Cozy-Comfy Sectional: Sixpenny Gabriel Chaise Sectional

Sixpenny Gabriel Sofa
Gabriel Chaise Sectional, Sixpenny ($4,599)
Shop

Cushions: Choice of feather down or polyfill | Width: 99 inches | Care: Dry cleaning strongly recommended; machine washable possible

What we like:

  • Nearly 30 fabric options
  • Customizations available, but not too much
  • Classic shape that never goes out of style

Worth noting:

  • Made-to-order products delivered in 12 to 14 weeks
  • Dry cleaning recommended

Why we chose it: A versatile design that will create the living room corner of your dreams.

As far as sectionals go, it’s hard to beat the ones from Sixpenny. With 55 styles from 11 different collections to choose from, there truly is something for everyone, especially if you like the cozy, lived-in look the brand is known for. While we love the Devyn’s clean lines, Aria’s armless elegance, and Elias’s cottagecore appeal, the versatility of the Gabriel ranks it a notch above the rest. Its slender arms, low-slung back, and loose, pleated corners all culminate in a soft, comfy place to lounge—the cushions are packed with feather down or a vegan poly mix and a layer of high-density foam. You’ll need to choose from canvas, linen, or velvet fabrics, but know that every frame is made from kiln-dried hardwood and plywood. While most of Sixpenny’s products are made to order, a few do come ready to ship and will normally arrive to you in two to three weeks. Plus you get free home delivery, 30-day free returns, and a limited lifetime warranty.

Best Sexy Silhouette: Lulu and Georgia Seton Slipcover Sofa

Sofas photo
Seton Slipcover Sofa, Lulu and Georgia ($4,298)
Shop

Upholstery: 100% linen | Width: 96 inches | Care: Spot-clean or professional upholstery cleaner

What we like:

  • Light blue linen upholstery
  • A tight-seat, seamless shape
  • Generously long—over 8 feet!

Worth noting:

  • Made to order (ships in 4-6 weeks)
  • A serious investment piece

Why we chose it: The seamless slipcover silhouette paired with a sultry, sea-blue linen colorway.

Never have we used sexy and slipcovered in the same sentence, but there’s a first time for everything. This sea-blue sofa features an alluring seamless slipcover overtop its clean-lined silhouette. Choose between four other elegant neutral colorways crafted from 100% linen.

How We Chose These Products

A slipcovered sofa is a big purchase, for both your living room and your budget, so we took this hunt for the best ones seriously. First, we chose brands that we have firsthand experience with or we trust to consistently deliver quality couches of all kinds, including slipcovered ones. Each pick needed to provide a variety of upholstery options (preferably machine washable!) that could coordinate with various decor styles. If they had an alluring shape and extra-cushy fill, all the better.

Our Shopping Checklist

Style

Style can reveal itself in an interesting silhouette, unexpected upholstery, or simply an overall cool vibe. Whichever stylish slipcovered sofa is the best fit for you, choose one you’ll be happy to have in your home to repurpose for years to come.

Upholstery

When it comes to upholstery types for a slipcovered sofa, the options are (nearly) endless: linen, cotton, weave, bouclé—need we go on? If you’re hoping for a hardy upholstery that can withstand repeated washings, opt for a performance fabric. Whether that’s in a timeless neutral or showstopping color is up to you.

Comfort

No matter what kind of sofa you’re buying, slipcovered or not, a sink-in-and-stay level of comfort is nonnegotiable. As you’re shopping, keep a close eye on the cushion filling. Are you a down lover or do you firmly believe in foam? That’ll help narrow your wish list.

Cleaning and Maintenance

The biggest benefit of a slipcovered sofa is that it’s a breeze to get stains out of, so easy cleaning was at the top of our must-haves. Many of the above options are machine washable, which is ideal, though a few require spot cleaning.

Ask Domino

Q: Can any sofa be slipcovered?

Most sofas can be slipcovered, especially if it has a traditional shape. The more intricate the style, the more likely you are to need a custom-made slipcover—and the more unnatural a slipcover may look. “Really modern designs or very ornate traditional styles may not look the best with a slipcover,” says Hammel.

Q: How do you clean a slipcover?

Different upholstery types will have different care needs, so always refer to your slipcover’s care tag or the brand’s website for guidance. Many of the options we chose are machine washable, though some need to be spot-cleaned or even professionally cleaned. Before throwing your slipcover in the washing machine willy-nilly—and, really, before buying the sofa to begin with!—read the care requirements carefully.

Q: Help! My slipcover is really wrinkly. What should I do?

A steamer is your friend and much less tedious to use than an iron. For a more relaxed vibe, embrace the wrinkles. “Wrinkles are okay if you’re looking for a more lived-in, casual feel,” says Hammel.

The Last Word

The best slipcovered sofas combine style, comfort, and the ease of knowing you can remove the upholstered exterior to wash your pup’s muddy paw prints off of it.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

Before we’d heard of Homebody, the term sofa recliner conjured images of bulky faux leather monstrosities and the awkward clunking noises associated with popping open a La-Z-Boy. Unsurprisingly, our biggest qualm with the style boils down to looks. That said, we can understand why someone would be willing to sacrifice aesthetics in the name of comfort—there may be no better place to take a nap or curl up with a book than a cushy couch that allows you to lean back to an optimal recline (there’s a reason they became so popular in the ‘70s).

But we’ve since learned that not all are eyesores. In fact, our search to uncover one actually turned up more than a few shop-worthy options—they offer all the bells and whistles of a staple recliner without needing to be relegated to a hidden corner of the basement. Check out our design-forward finds, below.

Our Favorite

Homebody The Couch

Sofas photo
The Couch, Homebody ($5,190)
Shop

Motorized or manual recline: Motor via remote | Fill: Sustainable down and foam | Configurations: Customizable from 2 to 7 seats

What we like:

  • Easy to clean
  • 100-day risk-free trial period
  • Modular, easy assembly
  • Hidden USB and USB-C inputs

Worth noting:

  • Pieces ship separately
  • Price ranges from $3,000 to $12,000-plus
  • Limited color choices (all are a performance fabric, though!)

Why we chose it: More than a recliner, this build-your-own modular slipcovered sofa includes an ergonomic headrest and comfy, edgeless arms for optimal lounging—no matter which way you prefer to lay.

As our assistant editor Raven McMillan so aptly puts it, Homebody’s couch is shockingly attractive “in all its svelte and slipcovered glory,” delivering on a promise to be comfier and cooler than the recliners of a bygone era. The marshmallowy cushions are a layered comfort sandwich of an eco-friendly down-alternative fill of cotton, memory foam, high-resilience foam, and high-density foam. That means you can enjoy that soft, sink-into-the-couch feeling without having to worry about them losing their pillowy shape over years of R&R. As for the exterior, you have your choice of a linen or velvet performance fabric cover in neutral, goes-with-anything shades of white, gray, and taupe. Stains and spills? Also a thing of the past.

While we could go on and on about the contemporary silhouette with piped detailing that rivals luxury furniture brands, what impressed us the most is the fact that this is a totally modular design held together by U-shaped connectors. Start with a compact two-seater, then build as your needs change. From the start, the brand’s site will show you all the different ways you can arrange the pieces from two to seven (an individual cushion is 37 inches high with a similar depth of 32.7 inches), so you can plan the L- or U-shaped couch of your dreams. Better yet, this one reclines via a remote control (stop it at whatever position you prefer) that you can store out of sight with the built-in pocket sewn into the headrest. All you need is 2 inches of clearance to enjoy.

More Sofa Recliners We Love

Tillery 3 Piece Power Recliner
Tillery 3 Piece Power Recliner, Burke Decor ($3,999)

Discreet comfort is the name of the game with this elevated recliner from Burke Decor. We love that the back seat is actually loose cushions, making it that much harder to discern its motion-powered capabilities. Hidden side buttons also help. And while these covers are as close to natural linen as you can get, it’s actually a performance fabric, so you won’t have to worry about lazing on its cozy cushions filled with a mixture of foam and feathers with a drink or snack in tow. Plus deciding where to place this piece in your living room doesn’t have to be limited to the proximity of an outlet—it comes with a 9-foot-long power cord.

West Elm Enzo 3-Piece Recline Chaise Sectional

West Elm Enzo 3-Piece Recline Chaise Sectional
Enzo 3-Piece Recline Chaise Sectional, West Elm ($3,815)

While you can opt for an Enzo equipped with two basic arms, why would you skip out on all the hidden storage potential of this reclining sectional? Not only does it feature built-in power footrests, you can also take advantage of hollowed arms and a L-shaped chaise waiting to be stuffed with blankets, extra throw pillows, and other miscellaneous living room knickknacks you’d prefer to keep out of sight. Control it with the press of a button to enjoy your ideal recline of the frame, which is made from kiln-dried solid pine and engineered wood. Take note that these cushions are filled with fiber-wrapped, high-resilience polyurethane foam, so it’s definitely on the firmer side. But to that we say: This one just offers a bit more support.

Pottery Barn Ultra Lounge Roll Arm Reclining Sofa

Pottery Barn Ultra Lounge Roll Arm Reclining Sofa
Ultra Lounge Roll Arm Reclining Sofa, Pottery Barn ($5,197)
Shop

A Pottery Barn top seller, the Ultra Lounge Reclining Sofa has the touch of traditional flair we love. If you aren’t in a rush, we’d take the time to peruse all of the made-to-order fabric selections, whether you prefer a solid neutral or a statement weave, that this couch can be dressed up in. Four buttons hidden on the inside of the arms independently control the arms, headrest, and footrest of its “no-sag” poly-wrapped cushions. Another surprise: The cylindrical legs can be removed. This kind of versatility, of course, will run your receipt somewhere between $5,000 and $7,000. If you’re looking for a smaller yet deeper option, we’re also fans of the Pearce two-seater

Crate & Barrel Leisure Power Recliner Sofa

Leisure Power Recliner Sofa
Leisure Power Recliner Sofa, Crate & Barrel ($3,200)
Shop

Would it be a sofa guide without a bouclé-covered recommendation? Who’s to say, but this nubby recliner from Crate & Barrel is the trendiest of the batch, inspired by the fabric made famous by Goop. It’s definitely pricey for the 84-inch size—but while technically a two-seater, it features deep, roomy cushions for plentiful seating (seriously, one shopper takes advantage of the 46-inch depth by dually tapping this piece as a guest bed). We love how the coated metal legs are barely visible, just peeping out from the double-flange tailoring. The same goes for the buttons that control the shelter-backed seat’s recline; its back and footrests move individually for lounging positions for the ultimate relaxing pad that reviewers have praised. “This is the perfect sofa for design aficionados who won’t compromise on comfort!” one comment reads. Another adds, “I am an interior designer and I am so happy with my purchase. This sofa is so comfortable and nicely firm. The fabric is perfect for our little kids and will disguise dirt and stains.”

Arhuas Rowland Leather Three Piece Motion Modular Sofa

Arhuas Rowland Leather Three Piece Motion Modular Sofa

This is not your grandparents’ faux leather recliner—Arhaus’s version is as chic as you’d expect from the luxury retailer. Its slipcovered look features a flanged edge around the pillowy cushions—dense foam padded with sterilized down and feathers—and sturdy, Craftsman-built frame of solid wood reinforced with recycled steel springs. It would be tough to choose between the six different artisan-finished leather covers (including indigo, chocolate, and pewter), though you can’t go wrong with a timeless natural camel. Our favorite part? It’s currently on sale for a limited time.

Wayfair Wade Logan Annchen Reclining Loveseat

Wayfair Wade Logan Annchen Reclining Loveseat

Shop

Compared to your standard couch, sofa recliners cost more on average, since there are all sorts of extra parts. But if you are living in a studio apartment, are outfitting a smell den or guest room, or your budget simply doesn’t allow you to make a motorized upgrade yet, this love seat is a perfect stand-in till you can. The recline is mechanical, but reviewers say once you get the hang of it, it is easy enough to use. The cushions are firm, and while some reviewers are hoping theirs will break in, others found it to be so comfortable that they were able to fall asleep immediately after assembly. Another points out, “Two people can sit comfortably. I’m not a small person, and my hubby is 6-feet-4. We fit fine on it.”

Our Shopping Checklist

Seating and Size

With a sofa recliner, you have to factor in clearance—a good rule of thumb is to keep a foot of space open. That’s because a couch that’s fully extended versus closed up will impact how close you place your coffee table (if at all) and will likely need to be in a room large enough that it isn’t pushed up against a wall (or at least won’t awkwardly sit too far from one).

Sofa recliners also come in as many different shapes and sizes as other couches—you have your choice of everything from smaller two-seater love seats and sprawling L- or U-shaped sectionals. And as Homebody proves, modular recliners exist, too.

Filling and Upholstery

Both the interior fill and exterior cover are integral to comfort and aesthetics. A foam filling is often used if structure is important to the furniture; sofas that are more sculptural are typically far firmer than, say, a pillowy-looking one. Our preferred combination includes a hybrid of foam and down or featherlike polyester fill wrapped up in a performance fabric.

However, there’s no right or wrong choice when it comes to upholstery. While we love bouclé and velvet as well as natural options like linen, these can require a bit more upkeep than nylon, polyester, or vinyl. With leather, just embrace the lovely patina that will happen over time.

Reclining

Another improvement we’ve seen happen to sofa recliners in the past decade or so—manual cranking levers are pretty much extinct. You’ll just need to make sure that you have an outlet nearby to plug one of our motor-powered picks into. Then via a dial, button, or remote, you can control your seat’s position based on how far the back and headrest go while the footrests raise up.

The Last Word

The best sofa recliners won’t make you cringe—better yet, we bet guests wouldn’t even know they can kick their feet up on your new couch unless you tell them. We made sure our picks easily blend in with most living rooms by prioritizing modern silhouettes dressed up in trendy performance fabrics and neutral colorways. No eyesores here.

This story was part of Sofa Week, our seven-day stretch of, you guessed it, sofas. After years spent styling, sitting on, and searching for the best of the best—from bespoke designs to rare under-$500 gems—we’re compiling our couch knowledge in one comfy spot.

A deep-seat sofa. We’re guessing you’d know one if you saw one but may not be able to pinpoint what exactly differentiates this dramatic silhouette from your standard couch. For starters, they look as cozy as a bed and prioritize comfort, especially if your seating arrangement is more about lazing than entertaining. If you’re the kind of person whose idea of the best weekend plans is gathering snacks and a throw blanket to watch as many of the latest A24 films in one sitting as possible, then you likely want to get more familiar with this particular style. Here’s everything you need to know about deep-seat sofas.

Just how deep are the cushions of a deep-seat sofa, anyway?

According to Apt2B, the average sofa seat depth is anywhere between 21 and 25 inches—so you could argue that options beyond that range are considered deep. But most of our favorites actually hover around a whopping 40 inches. Basically, when you pop a squat, your sofa should feel like it’s swallowing you—we mean that in the best way. The type of fill also has a heavy influence on just how soft that sink-in-the-couch feeling is; feathers, for instance, offer cloudlike comfort, whereas high-density foam is superior when it comes to structure and support.

Depth, by the way, can be measured from the back of a cushion to the front. The roominess is what makes this style of sofa so comfortable; there’s plenty of space to spread out and no need for legs to be dangling off the side.

Who are deep-seat sofas good for?

This couch is for naps, Netflix binges, and making sure everyone in the family has a spot to call their own; no need for extra floor cushions. If you still want to be able to perch yourself or host a lot of happy hours, we recommend looking for a sofa with well-structured arms and a taller back or one filled with firm foam.

For our shopping director, Liz Buxton, a deep-seat sofa was a no-brainer for the den of her home in upstate New York. In her words, it’s a proper TV room. The other swaying factor? Her husband, Tim, is tall—we’re talking over 6 feet—so it’s guaranteed to feel perfectly loungy for everyone, no matter if you’re going with a love seat, L-shaped sectional, or seven-piece pit.

How much do deep-seat sofas typically cost?

Since these couches are, for lack of a better term, big, they cost more than your standard sofa. Constructing one requires more of everything—upholstery fabric, fill, frame. And if the materials are higher quality, that only bumps up the price tag even more. It also means that you may have to pay extra to have one delivered. Our favorites, listed below, range in cost from $1,000 to $8,000, but we’ve seen others from luxury brands going for upwards of $9,000.

Anything else I should know before buying a deep-seat sofa?

Whenever possible, we always recommend popping into a showroom or store to see whether you like the feel of a sofa you’re considering. Otherwise, opt for a brand that allows you to live with your furniture for at least 30 days before having to decide whether it’s a keeper or not. And before checking out, make sure you have the room for one—even if it ships in pieces, you’ll want to ensure these oversize loungers will squeeze through your doorways and not interrupt the flow of your space with the rest of your furniture, whether that be coffee tables, side tables, or accent chairs. A deeper couch also means more of your rug may be covered, so keep that in mind, too.

Our Favorite Deep-Seat Sofas

If all the above sounds good to you, get ready to dive into one of our nine favorites.

West Elm Harmony Sofa

West Elm’s best-selling Harmony sofa offers two deep-seat-depth choices: 41 inches and 47 inches. Surrounded by pillowy-soft cushions (one of the absolute softest that the brand offers overall) on the back and arms, this couch’s design doubles down on comfort, especially if you choose one of the velvet performance fabrics. It’s also one of our top choices for sectionals

Pottery Barn York Slope Arm Deep Seat Slipcovered Sofa

We highly recommend perusing Pottery Barn’s 30-plus deep-seat sofas, but none more than this slipcovered sweetie. You can remove the covers of its pillow back cushions for easy upkeep, especially if you choose from one of the neutral colorways (there are plenty of off-white, cream, and light taupe options), since can always switch things up with a replacement or seasonal swap. The polyester-wrapped cushions (choose between a single bench, two, or three seats) filled with a down blend is soft but not too soft. And you won’t have to worry about sagging down the road thanks to support from the sinuous springs.

Amazon Stone & Bream Westview Extra Deep Down-Filled Couch

Stone & Beam Westview Extra Deep Couch, Amazon ($984 was $1,094)

As we mentioned, deep-seat couches don’t come cheap, but that doesn’t mean all are incredibly costly. The Westview via Amazon’s in-house brand Stone & Bream is currently 10% off, knocking the original price down to under $1,000. Its feather-filled cushions boast a 42-inch depth. And while they are covered in polyester, one reviewer writes, “This is one of the comfiest couches I have had and the material is really soft and seems durable. My cats have tried scratching at it but have not made any marks.” The solid wood base doesn’t hurt either.

Crate & Barrel Oceanside Wide Arm Deep Seat Apartment Sofa

If you live in an apartment that leans on the smaller side, that doesn’t mean a deep-seat sofa is totally out of the question. Opt for the 78-inch-wide version of this low-profile couch if room is tough to come by. Plenty of reviewers have successfully squeezed it into their rentals, and most describe it as deep, though the cushion itself is only 27 inches. Still, the overall silhouette sits like a deep-seat sofa, complete with wide arms (you can also go for the armless frame) and a puffy back.

ABC Carpet & Home Delancey Sectional

The overall depth of this massive 132-inch sofa is a mind-boggling 82 inches, making it the runner-up roomiest of the batch. While the handcrafted wood frame can be upholstered in a durable performance fabric, the company notes that this is a professional-clean-only situation, so we’d likely keep it clear of households with kids and pets.

Maiden Home The Dune Sofa

Maiden Home is known for offering super-luxurious, supersoft sofas, and one of our favorite slipcovered sofas and sectionals also happens to be the brand’s deepest offering. The cushions are 27 inches, but the back pillows boast an even greater lean. Laid-back and casual yet equally elegant, we’re obsessed with the airy look and feel of this seat. Psst: It also happens to be a Domino reader top buy

These superfluffy, feather-filled, 36-inch cushions are wrapped up in removable, stain-resistant, linen-blend covers. So even if you go for the all-white cream colorway, you won’t have to stress too much about movie-night mess. That’s why we’d say this sofa line is aptly named—what else would be better to take in a three-hour feature film? Peep it in our modular sofa guide, too.
