Whenever we hear someone on Instagram start a reel with “A lot of you have been asking…,” we’re generally inclined to continue scrolling. (Usually that phrase is the lead-up to something specific or sponsored.) But when Nate Berkus posted a recent video followed by the statement “My go-to paint colors for a neutral room,” we were all ears. The interior designer and Nate Home founder goes on to share a straightforward roundup of his all-time favorites. While most fall into the gray or white category, one swatch stood out: Lisbon by Portola Paints.

Berkus describes the color as a “green-y gray” with a historic feel, but the brand itself calls the Portugal-inspired swatch an earthy seafoam. The paint comes in standard finishes such as eggshell and flat, but it’s also available in the company’s beloved Roman Clay, which adds a whole new dimension to the shade. As to not leave followers hanging, Berkus hints that the bathroom is the perfect space to apply this paint, admitting he’s used it in his kids’ bathroom.

If you are searching for the perfect white or gray paint, consider Berkus’s other top picks. From Benjamin Moore, the pro swears by Alabaster, Swiss Coffee, Smokey Taupe, and Snowfall White⁣. His other go-to at Portola? Saint Sauvant. And from Clare, he gravitates toward Fresh Kicks and Flatiron. Ask and you shall receive.

The designer of Hotel San Fernando in Mexico City shares her secrets.

On its exterior, the recently opened Hotel San Fernando in Mexico City’s colorful La Condesa neighborhood boasts a cool mint green—but inside it’s the half-pink walls that lure visitors to book one of the 19 guest rooms in the former apartment building.

Keeping original details from the 1947 structure—stained-glass windows, curved breeze-blocks, an exterior shade—was important to Paige Henney, director of design at Bunkhouse Hotels, who worked with local architects and contractors to transform the space’s style, which she calls “a Mexico City version of Art Deco,” into a workable hotel.  But those pink walls? All new.

“The rooms were solid white when we came in,” Henney says. “But we did notice, in the previous renovation, that there was a wall transition at about wainscoting height—there was a drywall finish below and a stuccolike finish above.” The team loved the texture but felt like it wasn’t being shown off in the best possible way. Plus, they were hoping to use La Condesa’s famous pink somewhere in the project.

So they went to Comex, a Mexican paint company, and stocked up on the vibrant coral shade Emilia, then applied it halfway up, right to where the wall changes textures. Henney was lucky to have a natural line to follow, but she says if you are trying the look in your own home, painter’s tape and a level would give you a similar payoff. (“Just be extra-careful when you’re pulling back the tape so you don’t take the color with you,” she adds.)

The result added warmth and coziness to the rooms, and in some cases tricks the eye into thinking there’s furniture where there isn’t. For example, above a bed, the paint acts as a headboard. The trick to a no-fail illusion, Henney says, is avoiding the line intersecting outlets or poles, which can be hard to match up perfectly.

Once the walls were done, she added contrasting furniture to make it all pop, a proud homage to the authentic, not to mention vibrant, charm of the neighborhood.

Moss, emerald, mint, and more ahead.

We like to think whoever came up with the expression green with envy was talking about kitchen cabinets. Whether it’s a rich shade of emerald, a warm sage, or a restful moss, the color instantly brings zen vibes to a bustling room.

Even if you already have some go-to shades in mind, it can get a little overwhelming when the time comes to head out to the hardware store. To help, we rounded up our all-time favorite green kitchen cabinets, because a healthy dose of inspiration (and a little jealousy) might be just the kick you need to get started.

The Green Kitchen With Curve Appeal

There was a bit of charm missing from vintage seller Melissa Cattaneo Fontaine’s Colonial in the Atlanta suburbs, but with some reimagining of the cabinets and island, the transformation began. It started with custom door fronts and a lick of paint, then, to match her classic sensibilities, she added a scalloped hood over the range—but in brass to give it a bold finish.

The Color-Theory Green Kitchen

This London-based couple always knew they wanted to go with green kitchen cabinets, though they were originally leaning into a paler, yellowish laminate. When Pluck founder George Glaiser came on board, he nudged them toward a shade with gray undertones. He paired it with peachy pink skirting for a tried-and-true contrast. “They sit on opposite ends of the color wheel,” says Glaiser. “That’s why the combination works.”

The Green Kitchen That Plays Hide-and-Seek

From a certain angle, you wouldn’t even know this home in the U.K. had pea-colored cabinetry. The shade, from John Lewis of Hungerford‘s Shaker-style line, peeks out from the waterfall edges of these marble counters.

The Green Kitchen Where Old Meets New

It’s a no-brainer why this shade made it into Benjamin Moore’s historic color collection. The grayish hue is timeless and traditional, something you’d find in the English countryside. For an updated twist, Studio McGee paired the color with matte black hardware.

The Green Kitchen With a Dramatic Duo

The only thing sleeker than these superdark cabinets is a soapstone countertop. Jaclyn Peters pulled off the winning combo on a budget in this Winnipeg, Canada, home by opting for a 6-inch backsplash.

The Green Kitchen With Tight Corners

Your small space can handle a rich hue—the key is practicing restraint. First-time homeowner Brynn Harlock maintained a bright and airy vibe by painting her uppers white and the lower ones mossy.

The Shaker-Style Green Kitchen

Stepping away from her go-to blues, Emily Henderson went with a sophisticated option with lots of gray undertones from Sherwin-Williams in this Portland, Oregon, house. To amp up the character, the designer splurged on inset Shaker-style cabinets that cost around $25,000 to build and install.

The Art Deco–Inspired Green Kitchen

Jessica Brigham was on a mission to restore her kitchen’s 1930s spunk as part of the One Room Challenge. Jewel-tone cabinets and glitzy globe light fixtures accomplish just that.

The Teeny-Tiny Green Kitchen

Dabito’s guesthouse kitchenette features just four 24-inch Shaker cabinets from Overstock (the same place he scored the Moroccan cement tile). He painted them with Behr’s Fig Tree in a satin finish, then added pink walls and a graphic backsplash to turn what would otherwise be considered a serious color into a fun statement.

The Green Kitchen That’s Minty Fresh

There’s nothing childish about this candy-colored space. Designer Lauren Bug chose the playful hue when she realized green kitchen cabinets suited the walnut-wood floors better than the pale blue she had originally been considering.

The Farmhouse Green Kitchen

The addition of glass doors can elevate standard millwork to star status. Jaclyn Peters mastered the new-school rustic look with the addition of a vintage rug and industrial drawer pulls.

The British Green Kitchen

Designer Laura Stephens went old school in this London galley kitchen by swathing the cupboards in a rich mustardy shade and covering the walls in tongue-and-groove paneling that can withstand dampness and changes in temperature.

The ’70s Green Kitchen

Tara Marshall and Meghan Bannon of Fort Architecture leaned into this maple leaf–shaped Canada home’s retro feel. They sourced teak for the integrated paneled refrigerator and upper shelving to blend with the existing wood throughout the house, and painted the new lowers an olive hue that “feels contemporary but nostalgic at the same time.”

The Green Kitchen That’s a Bit Beige

After replacing this space’s stylized cabinet fronts with slab doors, designer Natalie Myers painted everything Berkshire Beige by Benjamin Moore, a pale green-gray that skews sage depending on the time of day.

The Green Kitchen That’s Almost Yellow

Lourdes Hernández’s pastel cabinets read retro— not nursery—next to her Smeg refrigerator and multitone ceramic pendant lamps. So what are you waiting for? You’ve got the green light.

And it has nothing to do with the color.

We’ve long suggested the idea of painting your ceiling, but we’re about to up the ante on that concept. Houzz recently released its emerging trends report, and the data revealed that searches for “high-gloss ceilings” are up 816 percent compared to this time last year. We see the appeal. By opting for a lacquered finish, you can add a whole other layer of visual interest that goes beyond color alone. Plus the reflective quality allows light to bounce off the surface, enhancing the overall brightness of the space. If you’re thinking about adding some shine to your fifth wall, take a cue from the rooms, below, that nailed the look.

Go All In

Cameron Ruppert had two directives from the owner of this Washington, D.C., home: pattern and color. The latter was exemplified in the form of an Yves Klein Blue dining room that’s completely wrapped—down to the window trim!—in a custom paint mix.

Pile on the Texture

In this neutral-heavy riverside residence in Connecticut, Britt and Damian Zunino, the husband-and-wife team behind Studio DB, decided to create a moody ambience in the library not just with a lacquered paint but with shiplap walls. The hue is actually a high-gloss spray finish by Fine Paints of Europe that was matched to Benjamin Moore’s Varsity Blues.

White It Out

Though the sheen is a bit less obvious in shades of white, the reflective effect of Farrow & Ball’s Blackened still brings a serious impact to this space, designed by Zoe Feldman. The glossy glow makes the already high ceilings really soar.

In most bars, you’ll find walls lined with mirrors so you can double-check for rogue flyaways or make an impromptu outfit adjustment. This isn’t the case at Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel’s new cocktail lounge, Dahlia. Here, you automatically look good—and you can thank Kelly Wearstler for that. “The saturated hues and dramatic lighting will make everyone look fantastic, whether they are on a date or out with friends,” says the designer and longtime Proper Hotels collaborator.

When you walk through the golden-hued stained-glass doors crafted by Judson Studios (the same local maker behind the creations in the ground-floor restaurant, Caldo Verde), you’re greeted by a monochromatic scene of shimmering pink cement tile and roman clay walls. When the designer began working on Dahlia, she referenced many of the same Mexican, Spanish, and Moroccan influences that can be found throughout the 147-room hotel, which was constructed in the 1920s by architecture firm Curlett & Beelman and subsequently served as a YWCA in the 1960s. “Zellige tile is a great partner to plaster,” Wearstler notes.

How did she create a space where everyone and everything appears at its best? Ahead, the pro reveals all.

Pretty in Pink

Wearstler decorated from the ground up: The dark rose vintage rug in the center of the space served as the literal launch pad for the blush color of the walls (it’s a custom shade she made with Portola Paints’ Roman Clay), banquette upholstery, and even the artwork. With its peach undertones and rich texture, the walls in particular emit a radiance that bounces off and complements all skin tones.

Tricks of the Light

Lighting is as crucial to Wearstler’s work as it is to Hollywood’s many cinematographers. Recessed fixtures can result in awkward spotlights and shadowy corners, but a layered arrangement of table lamps, sconces, and chandeliers—as found in Dahlia—only spread good vibes. “It’s important to stay away from downlights,” Wearstler attests. Her one exception: An oversize ceiling pendant lamp by Ruemmler that presides over the scene. Wrapped in light-filtering silk, it casts a warm glow.

Sweet Visual Treats

The one thing Wearstler never styles a bar without? Natural elements. “Sculptural fruit in muted tones and florals always look chic,” she says. Bonus points if those accents are still on the branch and corralled in a statement vessel, pulling double duty as a dramatic arrangement while guests wait for their beverages. (Pro tip: Pair your cocktail with bites by James Beard Award–winning chef Suzanne Goin—cheesy stack, anyone?)

The Big Picture

Epic gallery walls are a given at any of the Proper Hotels that Wearstler has a hand in, and the designer is strategic about her process. First, she lays everything out, to scale, in Photoshop so she can easily try different configurations. Step two: Making sure there is a wide range of silhouettes. “Incorporating art that is diverse in shape and size will ensure it does not look staged,” says Wearstler. At Dahlia, a large piece by artist Lou Fink hangs near a gesso work by Jonathan Todryk and two petite ceramic mirrors by Mithe Espelt. You’ll find yourself peering at the reflective pieces for an entirely different reason here: admiration of their beauty.

One way all the top paint companies let us know what colors are going to be big next is by releasing a color of the year. But until those predictions roll out later this summer and fall, perhaps a more accurate indicator is simply looking at what’s new on the shelf. Over the past three months, many of our go-to brands have introduced fresh hues and finishes to their assortments, and while we weren’t surprised to find a handful of airy blues and greens in the mix, there are plenty of swatches (hello, fiery orange!) we’re excited to experiment with. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new, including a few of the swatches we are eyeing.

The New Brand

Alkemis Paint is taking the zero-VOC movement to a new level. The brand, which celebrated its launch at NYCxDesign in May, debuted a collection of 119 colors, all made from the same nontoxic product that features clear quartz as its foundational layer. The omission of plasticizers means it is water vapor–permeable and mold growth is virtually impossible. The company also touts that its super-durable nature allow it to perform for more than 20 years before repainting is necessary. The production process is also emission-free: Its manufacturing sites only rely on renewable energy.

The New Exterior Paint

Element Guard, Benjamin Moore ($58 per gallon)

Even on the sunniest of summer days, a rainstorm can roll through and deter any plans you had of updating your home’s exterior. Luckily, Benjamin Moore’s Element Guard takes some of the stress off. The premium exterior paint is designed to perform in any weather and is specially formulated to stand up to one of the trickiest painting environments: high moisture. You can apply a coat as soon as 90 minutes before rainfall and—just in case you don’t get around to your reno until winter—in temperatures down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit.

The New Summer Palette

Today Clare released five shades in honor of summer, and most of them fittingly look like they belong in an ice cream shop. The highlights include Before Sunrise, a “peachy light orange with an illuminating glow”; Cloud Watching, an airy light blue; and Fire Sign, a vivacious red-orange.

The New Flat Finish

Dead Flat finish (available in all colors), Farrow & Ball ($140 per gallon)

You’ve probably heard of Farrow & Ball’s Dead Salmon color. Now meet Dead Flat. The finish, which boasts just a 2 percent sheen, has been in the works for the past five years and is now available in the brand’s entire 132-color palette. The practical pros? It’s washable, wipeable, and scuff resistant, making it a great choice for high-traffic areas.

The New Sprays

Your DIYs just got a little more colorful. Glidden Max Flex has debuted six new shades, from Yukon Gold to Brown Clay, in its all-surface interior-exterior spray paint, which features a built-in primer and even adheres to plastic and vinyl. The brand also dropped two new hues (black and sapphire blue) in its exterior fabric spray paint, so you don’t have you toss your dingy-looking welcome mat or pool lounger cushion.

Forget what you thought you knew about  renovating for resale value. Buyers are bidding farewell to blank-slate interiors and willing to shell out more money for a house with a touch of drama, particularly in the kitchen. According to Zillow’s just-released paint color analysis report, a white kitchen may actually hurt a home’s sale price by more than $600. Instead, a striking preference for dark gray walls is rising, as buyers are willing to pay a premium for this moody aesthetic. The study surveyed more than 4,700 recent and prospective home buyers and found that properties with deep graphite kitchens could sell for $2,512 over asking price. Pewter is also apparently a major draw: Zillow estimates midtone gray kitchens can bump a listing’s value $2,553. Of course, the ultimate sale price depends on a variety of factors, but this data proves a little strategic sprucing can make a significant difference. Take a look at three kitchens that nail this edgier hue.

Don’t Forget the Shelving

Interior designer Joanne Palmisano worked wonders with a small budget to retain the old-world charm of her client’s new home in Stowe, Vermont. While most cabinets couldn’t be salvaged, Palmisano cleverly installed open shelves and painted everything, including the plank that lines the backsplash, a captivating peppercorn gray.

Go Totally Monochrome

In Alberta, Canada, Rebecca Mclean and her husband, Brad, crafted their 8,000-square-foot dream home from scratch. While the central cooking zone boasts a bold matte black kitchen, the additional bar-slash-kitchen in the basement steals the spotlight with its silvery soapstone counters and fish scale–tile backsplash.

Simplify a One-Wall Layout

After deciding to flip the placement of her guest bedroom and her kitchen, Silvana Vergara saved hundreds of dollars by situating the appliances and sink along the same wall. Then she opted for Scavolini cabinets and shelving in a chic slate hue. The result? An effortlessly cool aesthetic that perfectly complements the new layout.

If you’re ever feeling stuck when couch shopping, you can’t go wrong with a brown leather sofa. Timeless, durable, comfortable, stylish—it’s an easy and obvious choice. The hard part? Decorating around it. Figuring out what colors go with a brown leather sofa isn’t exactly intuitive. Some earth-toned neutrals like terracotta tend to wash it out, while charcoal gray and black can give off bachelor pad vibes. Instead we strive for cozy and ambient colors that accentuate a brown leather couch’s welcoming ways. In fact, many of the hues that do it justice are ones we’d call in-between shades, or tones that straddle the line between two different colors. Ahead, six foolproof paint colors that will pair perfectly with your brown leather sofa.

Light Orange-Pink

Other than simply being a happy color, pink has an unusual benefit: It’s extremely flattering. Many designers will choose the hue to make the people in the room look better, but the same can be said for the furniture in the space. Caitlin Higgins, the partnerships manager for Emily Henderson, reminded us of this when she painted her living room walls with two coats of Sherwin-Williams’s Pueblo, which she describes somewhere in between a light orange and a “barely there, almost-pink shade.”

Creamy Yellow

No windows and dark furniture can be a recipe for a drab-feeling space—focusing on the fifth wall (aka the ceiling) can help. In her small Queens, New York, apartment, jewelry designer Sarah Burns swathed her ceiling in Benjamin Moore’s Buttermilk, lending a glow over the vintage Afra & Tobia Scarpa pieces below.

Bright White

If your brown leather sofa is as cool and sculptural as Brandon Blackwood’s vintage Ubald Klug one, then opt for simple surroundings with a bright, fresh backdrop like Pure White. Fellow fashion designer Christian Siriano says this specific swatch reminds him of apartments in Paris—not a bad place to pretend you and your big brown leather sofa live.

Dark Blue-Green

What do you get when you pair a brown leather sofa with Clare’s Current Mood (a “mysterious, moody green,” per the brand’s description)? You get a scholarly library feel. At least, that’s how design editor Ryann Trombetti would describe her living room setup, which she completed with a burgundy-tinged vintage wall hanging and faded red antique rug. Her only regret? Not painting the ceiling the same color (but she has plans to fix that stat).

Light Blue-Green

If you want less study vibes and more play-with-the kids energy, go a shade or two brighter. This silvery blue color features flecks of green and has been a part of Farrow & Ball’s assortment since the company’s very beginning. In her Waco, Texas, home, stylist and photographer Hilary Walker kept things effortless and bright with white moldings, a graphic white rug, and a globe chandelier.

More Brown

Wood. We know it might not be your first thought, but hear us out: A brown leather sofa in a room with stained warm wood walls screams “countryside oasis.” You also don’t have to live in a rustic bed-and-breakfast like the Inn at Kenmore Hall (pictured above) to re-create this setting. Portola Paints’s Roman Clay line lets you achieve a similar color and texture without having to splurge on millwork.

As sage green continues to sweep across our feeds as the go-to shade for creating soothing kitchens, serene reading nooks, lush living areas, and more, we’ve been seeing the hue pop up in a new space: Yep, sage green kids’ rooms are a thing. The low-key tone is more versatile than adding a little calm and bringing the outside in—it can become a backdrop to play up punchier palettes, graphic shapes, and sustainable materials. It’s a whole mood (as evidenced by the zen little boy’s room, above). Here are some of our favorite decorating ideas to incorporate the color in every corner.

Let the Little Ones Choose

In the Los Angeles home of photographer Nicki Sebastian; her husband, Roni; and their two daughters, Cami and Cece, the scene is full of florals. But when the girls got to choose the mood for their rooms, Cece, the eldest, went with “dinosaur green.” The choice reflects exactly who she is right now, but that’s not to say she didn’t get a little guidance from Mom. “I gave them the Farrow & Ball palette to choose from,” Nicki says, laughing.

Bring the Outdoors In

Lindsey and Brad Robinson live 10 minutes outside Grand Rapids in Ada, Michigan, on a six-acre plot surrounded by trees. “With five kids, we try to spend as much time outside as possible,” says Lindsey, but even the inside evokes forest feelings thanks to the mossy colored walls in the boys’ room.

Go Green in Every Sense

Sustainability is often at the forefront of a parent’s mind when designing a nursery. For this project, Hope Clark of Oak + Olive chose vintage decor and steered clear of products and fabrics made using harmful chemicals. To channel the natural look further, she reached for Farrow & Ball’s Card Room.

Storing toys is a challenge in any house. These sage-hued shelves showcase prettier items and pair well with soft peach and white. Painting the panels and molding creates a streamlined effect—especially when the surplus of stuff can be tucked inside storage compartments under a daybed.

Work All the Angles

Don’t let the color’s organic qualities fool you; a deeper tint of sage can be as bold as anything. In the hands of Sarah Sherman Samuel, striking lines—both on the DIY striped ceiling and in the bunk bed’s cool cutout arch—look extra-clean and crisp in her kids’ bedroom.

Sage doesn’t immediately come to mind for a punchy accent wall, but designer and mom Chiara de Rege used her starry green wallpaper as a background to display her daughter Phoenix’s colorful book collection. Name a better view (or sleep HQ) for an infant than a “window” onto a sweet leafy landscape—surrounded by a wash of more calming pale green. A wall of storage cabinets keeps all the baby essentials out of sight (but still accessible) so your little one can dream in peace.

A cherry red or charcoal black kitchen isn’t for the faint of heart, which explains why shades of white and gray tend to be the most popular. At least indoors. It turns out, most people would be willing to go outside their comfort zone (literally) in their backyards, according to Brown Jordan Outdoor Kitchens’s 2023 Outdoor Living report. The new survey, which was commissioned in partnership with the Harris Poll and tapped more than 2,000 U.S. adults, reveals that over two-thirds of Americans (69 percent) feel outdoor kitchen cabinets present an opportunity for “fun and different” color selections compared to interior ones. Younger consumers feel even stronger about embracing the rainbow: 77 percent of those ages 18 to 44 would opt to depart from traditional hues in their alfresco cooking zones.

We’re well familiar with the logic—it’s the same reason people love to use a loud wallpaper print in their powder room. For most, an outdoor kitchen is strictly a summertime amenity, so you don’t have to look at it constantly. When it comes to Brown Jordan’s colorful offerings, a few of its top-selling cabinet hues are chili red, autumn orange, mint green, and cotton candy pink. Luckily it doesn’t cost a fortune to get in on the look: The company’s Elements line features freestanding powder-coated steel systems starting at $5,000.

Or if you already have an existing outdoor kitchen setup but want to liven things up, shop some similar paint swatches, below. Who knows, they might even inspire you to bring a bit of color indoors once barbecue season is over.
